Just two weeks after launching on Steam, "multiplayer extraction survival horror" shooter Level Zero: Extraction has reached the end of the road. In a message posted to Steam, community manager Antishyr said the game has "underperformed compared to our expectations," and thus "it's no longer feasible for our relatively small teams to sustain the game from a financial standpoint."..

Level Zero Extraction is wrapping up support just two weeks after hitting 1.0

It's a tough time to be a competitive multiplayer game right now. Whether you're an ambitious indie or even a triple-A behemoth with a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, carving out a niche, supporting it with content, and retaining players is no easy task. Level Zero Extraction certainly nailed step one. A horror-infused extraction FPS with a Dead By Daylight style asymmetrical twist that lets you play as a squad of mercenaries or as a terrifying alien, it was an exciting prospect. However, it struggled throughout its stint in early access, and despite reaching its 1.0 launch just over two weeks ago, developer Doghowl Games has revealed it's ending support for the game.

1.0 and Beyond: What's Next?

Hello, Mercs & Aliens,

Antishyr here. As the project's community manager, on behalf of DogHowl and tinyBuild, I'm informing you that Level Zero: Extraction has reached the state that will, most probably, be its final form for the time being. The final patch for the game was released on January 30th, 2025.

Level Zero: Extraction is an ambitious debut title from Doghowl. Our desire was to create a game unlike any other by combining the extraction shooter and asymmetrical horror genres. Although we ended up seeing that those are not easy to blend, we're grateful we had the chance to try and gain so much invaluable experience.

On behalf of my teams and personally, I want to say an enormous "Thank you" to all of you. For supporting us in our efforts. For helping us break into the Top 100 Steam's most wishlisted games and making the Open Beta the second most-played demo of the Steam Next Fest. For being patient about all the changes we made. For taking the precious time to give us insightful feedback and creative ideas. For the critique and urging us to fix or change stuff. And just for playing the damn game, of course! We really hope it has created memories that will live on.

I also want to thank my colleagues at the dev and publishing teams for their efforts. This journey has been no easy feat—from establishing the original 4 vs 2 vision to the extraction rebranding in February 2024 to the turbulent but exciting Early Access launch. I'm blessed to be a part of this hard-working crew that isn't afraid to take risks in an attempt to not only make games but also try something fresh and different. We did our damn best, whether it's enough or not.

And lastly, a quick personal word from me. As a community manager, I've leveled up immensely as a professional while working on LZ:E. And you have no idea how grateful I am for that. It breaks my heart to see the support of something I've put years of work into wind down, and I really hate to come to you all with such news instead of some thrilling announcement or a kickass update. As some wise Merc said, "It is what it is."
A SHORT Q&A
Q.: Will there be more updates and patches?—Unfortunately, LZ:E has underperformed compared to our expectations. It's no longer feasible for our relatively small teams to sustain the game from a financial standpoint. Therefore, it's a hard but necessary decision to gradually wrap up the support.

Q.: Will the servers remain online?—Definitely, the servers are staying online.

Q.: What about the features listed in the development roadmap?—We rolled out the final, concluding update for Level Zero: Extraction on January 30th, 2025.

Q.: Will there be wipes in the future?—Yes, wipes will happen on a Thursday of every first week of the month.

Q.: Will you organize weekend REP events?—There will be no weekend events in the future.

Q.: What's next for the development team?—Doghowl have plans to develop a new multiplayer title. This time, it's planned to be a co-op experience. To support the studio, join the Discord server of Doghowl's new project and follow the team's accounts on X (Twitter) and YouTube for future news. We really hope that the invaluable experience gained with Level Zero: Extraction will help our emerging studio in future efforts.
