About the status of development as of November

We've received another status update from Daraneko.
Please give it a read.

I'm here with my second regular status update.

Right now, I'm making a whole lot of event scenes.
Chapter 3 Route A has as many scenes as Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 post-route split combined, so I'm screaming internally while I'm working on it.
And this is after deleting a bunch of stuff too. There were just too many things I absolutely didn't want to leave out, so I'm really giving myself a headache here.

For this time's new art, here's a new pose for Misha in the desert.
Fun fact: in the survey (which you can access from the game), there's a question that asks "Who's your favorite character?" and it turns out that Misha's the most popular of them all.
What's more, every once in a while I get messages from people all over the world who are madly in love with her. Fear her irresistable charms.



Actually, even a slightly different pose like this isn't as simple as just going up to the illustrator and saying "Hey, can you draw this for me? Thanks."
It actually takes quite some time to make new art.

First, I have to think about what kind of scene I want to make, and what kind of composition would fit that scene.
Then, I collect a bunch of references so that the artist can understand what I want the illustration to look like.
When the art is done, I'll tell the artist what I think, and go, "Could you make that part a little bit more like this?" and tweak the details until it's perfect.
Neither me nor the artist could make the art on our own.
It's the fruit of our joint efforts.

And that includes this piece too, of course.
I asked for so many revisions with so much passion and conviction, like, "The cleavage! It needs to look more, y'know, like this! Like THIS!!" to the point where even the artist started cringing at me like, "Does this even look any different...?" Despite that, here it is. The fruit of our joint efforts.

I was only planning to show one new illustration this time, but here's another extra sneak peek.
I'll keep this guy's identity a secret for now.



By the way, we don't know if he's actually going to attack like this.
This picture was suddenly sent to me by the artist. Unprompted. I kind of like it, though.
Maybe it'd be fun to add sound effects like this to the attacks, just like comic books.

About the status of development as of 4th October, 2022

Dear all,

Thank you for playing The Use of Life. This title is currently in Early Access, and development towards a full release is still underway. Here is a message we received from the developer, Daraneko Games, reporting on the development status as of 4th October.

Thank you for waiting for the update to The Use of Life.

At first I thought I'd be able to release this 3 months or so into development, but one thing came up after the other, and, well, now it's late.

Even so, I'm still working on the game, so please wait a just a little longer.

...But dragging my feet on the ground and making empty promises isn't exactly ideal, is it?

That's why I'll be revealing art from the next chapter of the story every month as part of a status report.

The third chapter of the Misha route will take place in the desert.

New characters and enemies will be added in this chapter.

This game is made almost solely by one person, Daraneko (yours truly), and there's a lot of text.
Sometimes I get stuck on a few lines and sit there with my head in my hands for a few hours.

To be completely honest, this might not be the only time development gets delayed, but I promise to finish it and make a good game, so please stick around until then.

Update ver0.2.2

Hello everyone,

Thank you playing The Use of Life!
We have updated the game to Ver. 0.2.3. Here are the bug fixes and changes.

[Additional Features]
・Addition of save slots
・Along with the addition of save slots, fixed an issue for users that have cleared the game in which when they try to load into the save data that has their cleared game data, it would load them at the start of the boss fight. Now with the addition of new chapters, users that have cleared the game will now start at the appropriate place, just before the new chapter.
 ┗ Due to there being only one save data slot, this was implemented to ensure that the game was still playable after clearing the game.
 ┗ For cleared data up until ver 0.2.2, terribly sorry for the inconvenience but you will unfortunately have to restart the boss fight.
 ┗ Until the chapter is updated, loading the save data that is caught up to the latest chapter will only show the status confirmation screen.
・Automatically adds save data from trial version if no previous save data is detected.
*In order to transfer the save data from the trial version, the Demo and Early Access version's file directory must be the same. (As long as the game installation path is set normally, it should be possible to transfer save data. If there is already save data from the Early Access ver., you cannot transfer save data from the Demo ver.

[Changes]
Changed the wording of the help section from "Help" to "Suspended Save".
Changed the wording of the schedule to accommodate future updates.
Slightly reduced the MP required for the Fairy Event in Forest of the Great Tree

[Bug Fixes]
・Fixed a bug where pressing spamming certain buttons while loading into the game would make sounds.
・Fixed a bug that caused a random event in the bandits' hideout where encountering a single Chauris would be mislabeled as a pair of Chauris.
・Fixed a bug where some areas that had already been released were stuck on black screen.
・Fixed a bug where the game was still functional even after selecting "Quit Game", or "Give Up".
・Fixed a bug where after selecting "Give Up" in an event where you took damage, the game would save right before death.
・Fixed a bug that the direction of evasion for the 2Poison [Body and Head] skill's "head" was facing ↓ instead of ↑.
・Fixed a bug that allowed you to make a selection at the Key Talisman even though you did not have enough MP.
・Fixed a bug where instead of Goshe saying "Hm, Something's glowing in there." it would say be narration.
・Fixed a bug that caused mismatched dialogues in the route branching in the first half of Chapter 2.
 ┗ The route itself is accurate, so this does not impact gameplay.
・Fixed a bug that allowed you to access and use the menu by pressing the "Cancel" button while the game was loading.

  • Added a paralysis effect when paralyzed and unable to evade.
  • Added poison weakness to the Slime (Bandits' Hideout) and the Warrior Beetles (Forest of the Great Tree).
  • Increased the rate of "Take Down" moves done by the Warrior Beetles (Forest of the Great Tree)


Bug Fixes
  • Fixed typos.
  • Fixed a bug that cancelled the sword sheathing animation when using the spell incantation while the sword is sheathed.
  • Fixed a bug that occurred after defeating the hunting dog at Dawn Hill, where if you select the "Decide against it" option at the sniping point, the hunting dogs would respawn.
  • Fixed a bug where catching fish with magic at Arthus Ridge would not consume MP.

The Future Development Plans for The Use of Life

Hello everyone!

Thank you very much for your tremendous support!
We are pleased to announce the future of The Use of Life as we spoke to the developer of the game, Daraneko Games.

After Daraneko Games hosted a poll on their Twitter account, many fans have voted for a continuation of the story.
We have heard you loud and clear so stay tuned as the next story is on its way!

Before making the upcoming stories, we plan on addressing the following issues first.

  1. Adding additional save slots (4 slots)
  2. Make it a little easier to see that being Paralyzed affects Dodging
  3. Fix typographical errors
  4. Miscellaneous


[h3]Important Bug fixes, changes, and Additions[/h3]
(These are bugs/changes that we are planning to address sometime in the near future)
  1. Add a function that allows players to see the battle log from the previous turn. (We want to avoid disrupting the battle flow, so we will make it possible to view the battle log after).
  2. Addition of a larger Windowed Mode display resolution
  3. Considering alternatives to the "button pressing before checking choices" issue. (If wait times are added, it will negatively impact the pacing)
  4. Adding a function to select the bottom choice by pressing "up" when the top choice is selected. (This function is harder than it looks so it will take some time)
  5. Adding a category function while selecting techniques. (e.g., separating Sword Skills and Battle Techniques
  6. Addition of a new mode called "Infinite Arena"
  7. Display the stat difference between the currently equipped item and the available item you are switching to.


[h3]The following changes are being considered:[/h3]
  1. Adjusting the time it takes for the enemy to become angry.
  2. Activating a passive skill depending on the "Flame" when the player is dying. (Interesting concept but execution might be difficult)
  3. Backlog function
  4. Addition of a "Do Nothing" Action
  5. Putting a "●" over the enemy's crotch during the Bathroom event.
