New Bombers, New Battles: The Do17 Lands in Scramble

A major update has just landed in Scramble: Battle of Britain, and with it comes a new challenge for RAF pilots: the Dornier 17, one of the Luftwaffe’s most iconic twin-engine bombers, is now available as an AI-controlled enemy in the core game!

With the arrival of the Do 17, we’re introducing a brand-new layer of tactical complexity to bomber engagements. Players will encounter this new threat in fresh missions featuring enhanced mechanics and an improved UI that will help to track, intercept, and break up the new enemy formations.

We have reinforced every aspect of bomber intercept missions in Scramble. Pilots may now find bombers escorted by enemy fighters who join the dogfight on a turn delay. Bombers AI will employ evasive maneuvers, and a depleted bomber formation may decide to turn and retreat rather than continue to their objective.

Scramble bombers are now modeled with animated bomb bay doors and slings. Damaged bombers will jettison their payloads before turning for home, and aircraft with multiple stations will bail all their live crew when fatally damaged.

Nicknamed “The Flying Pencil” for its sleek, narrow design, the Dornier 17 was a fast, agile, low-level bomber that caught many RAF airfields off guard in the early stages of the war.
Its maneuverability at low altitudes, combined with multiple defensive gun positions, makes it a serious threat in the sky. A well-coordinated Do 17 formation can saturate the air with suppressive fire, forcing RAF pilots to rely on teamwork, timing, and precision. But don’t stick around too long: enemy fighters will be on your tail, diving in to provide top cover for the bombers.

A Lens On: Battle of Britain - EP.2 | How did the war change the pilots?

A Lens On is a documentary-style editorial series that uses our games to explore historical events, featuring interviews and insights.

Episode 2 uncovers the hidden mental battles pilots faced in the skies.
The Battle of Britain was a multinational fight for survival, with 20% of RAF pilots being overseas volunteers.
By August 30, 1940, the RAF flew up to 1,000 sorties daily, while the Luftwaffe struggled with mounting stress and high suicide rates.
Unlike German pilots, Allied airmen received rest periods to manage exhaustion.

A Lens On: Battle of Britain - EP.1 | Heroes in the Skies

A Lens On is a documentary-style editorial series that uses our games to explore historical events, featuring interviews and insights.

In this first season, we draw upon Scramble: Battle of Britain to delve into World War II.

Get ready to dive deep into this legendary conflict, uncovering the heroic pilots, cutting-edge tactics, and game-changing aircraft that shaped the future of aerial warfare.

In the first episode, the main focus will be on the amazing pilots that took part in the battle.

The Battle of Britain was a crucial fight for air superiority over southern England and the Channel, preventing a Nazi invasion.

Elite fighter pilots, known as aces - those who shot down at least five enemy aircraft - played a decisive role, with figures like Douglas Bader and Eric Lock leading the charge.

The difficulties of this battle tested both the physical and mental endurance of young pilots. However, despite making up less than 10% of pilots, their impact was immense.

Featuring expert insights from historians Victoria Taylor and Paul Beaver, alongside exclusive commentary from the game’s Lead Developer Jon Coughlin, this series reveals the strategy, innovation, and sheer courage that defined the battle.

A special thanks to the RAF Museum in Biggin Hill (UK) and to the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar for the opportunity to conduct our interviews.
