Character Abilities: Galahad

[p]Galahad’s lucky escape from Cread’s laboratory left his mind intact, save for the occasional urge to KILL ALL HUMANS! However, he did acquire a few useful abilities from his reluctant fusion with experimental robotic augmentations. Enhanced strength and inhuman endurance aside, let's take a look at Galahad’s new arsenal. [/p]
Magnetic Arm
[p]When activated, Galahad’s mechanical arm emits electromagnetic energy from one hand, which pulsates to allow Galahad to manipulate certain objects from a distance, even extremely heavy ones that would be otherwise unmovable. An ability critical to moving obstacles that may hinder the mission, or creating new platforms to help escape a tricky situation.

[/p][p]Magnetic levitation has more uses than you would think, too! Galahad’s hand serves as a high-speed, self-contained maglev train, propelling our cybernetic super spy across various rails with more grace than you would expect from a heavy metal, kilt-clad cyborg.

Cyber Smash
[p]Galahad's combat ability is a devastating ground pound. His strong robotic legs launch him high into the air above his target, where Galahad then fires thrusters to launch him back to the ground with incredible speed and force. With his huge robotic fist outstretched, he creates a huge explosion on impact and damages all enemies within range. This move can also smash floor panels open to create new pathways.

[/p][p]Thankfully, Galahad’s on our side. We don't fancy Dr. Cread’s chances once he catches up with him! What is Metroidvania?

[p]
If you’ve been following Blast Brigade vs. The Evil Legion of Dr. Cread, you’ll know we often use the word ‘Metroidvania’ to describe the game. It’s no secret that Blast Brigade is indebted to its spiritual predecessors, and with the glorious return of the bounty hunter Samus Aran in Metroid Dread, we wanted to take a look back at the games that helped shape the development of Blast Brigade. Without further ado, let’s raid Dr. Cread’s secret archives for a gaming history lesson![/p][p] [/p]
Back to the 1980s
[p]
‘Metroidvania’ is a genre popularized by the Metroid and Castlevania series, the name of which is a portmanteau—a blending of sounds and meanings—of the two franchises. Metroid, first released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986, is a 2D, side-scrolling action-adventure game developed by Nintendo. A genuine classic, it’s among the first to feature many of the genre’s now-beloved hallmarks.

Unlike many other games of that time, Metroid encouraged non-linear exploration and rewarded discovery. Completing Samus’ mission on Zebes was possible only by acquiring new weapons and retracing your steps to find new paths through previously locked areas. [/p][p]Punishing bosses, precision platforming, enemies vulnerable to a particular type of weapon, interconnected, labyrinthine level design, and multiple endings encouraged speedrunning enthralled gamers in 1986 and beyond (in re-releases and the sequels Metroid II: Samus Returns and Super Metroid).

“All the damn vampires”
[p]
Though the original Castlevania, released just one month after Metroid in Japan, was a relatively linear introduction to the Belmont clan and their eternal war against Dracula, its sequel Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest utilized many of the elements that made Metroid a hit. Subsequent sequels throughout the 1990s returned to the series’ more straightforward platforming roots, until a certain PlayStation game released in 1997 changed the course of the vampire-slaying series and—alongside the Metroid games—set the standard to aspire to while pioneering a new genre.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is highly regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. Starring Dracula’s son Alucard, on a quest to stop his father’s resurrection, this sequel saw the return of the non-linear 2D exploration of Castlevania II married with the action-heavy gameplay that remained popular in its predecessors. [/p][p]Konami was inspired by The Legend of Zelda games’ scale of adventure and their encouragement of backtracking to solve puzzles with new items, and thus introduced an open castle for players to explore at their leisure. In a nod to role-playing games, experience could also be earned to level up attributes, making for a rich and meaty experience for players to sink their fangs into over long sessions.

Character Spotlight: Galahad

Gavin Henry Gale, codenamed Galahad, was born in a small village in the mountains of Scotland. A highlander by nature and a gentleman by education, he enlisted into the Royal Navy and served his country valiantly, achieving the rank of commander before applying for a position in MI6.

Galahad quickly became one of the most distinguished covert operatives of the Crown… and a severe headache for his supervisors. Known not only for bravery and valor but also for his quick temper and many vices, he was fired and hired again more times than anyone could keep track of.

Later in his career, Galahad was sent on a secret mission to the island of Dr. Cread. Arriving on the island in a miniature submarine, he made it to shore before suddenly falling into a trap! He engaged in a brilliant yet ultimately futile fistfight with Cread’s soldiers, and was subsequently overpowered and captured. Though he was subjected to horrific torture at the hands of Cread’s minions, he refused to betray his queen and country, and remained silent until the bitter end. Infuriated by Galahad’s resilience, Dr. Cread ordered his henchmen to prepare the Scottish spy for robotization.

Galahad’s body was fused with a heavy assault battle robot, but just before the control chip was installed in his brain, B.L.A.S.T Agent Jeffrey J. Jefferson began an assault on Cread’s laboratory, giving Galahad the chance to escape and retain his free will.

Equipped with his new robotic augmentations and a burning desire for revenge, Galahad is now more focused than ever on ridding the world of the maniacal scourge of Dr. Cread.
