Exploring Forza Horizon 5’s Biomes and Seasons

While there’s no denying that flashy supercars and built-for-fun off-road vehicles are the stars of the show in the Forza Horizon series, it’s the widely varied, based-on-real-life environments that really make the games shine. Whether it’s kicking up dust while blasting across the Australian Outback in Forza Horizon 3 or leaving a swirling trail of leaves through the English countryside on a crisp autumn day in Forza Horizon 4, we’ve all got great memories of exploring the vibrant worlds created by the developers at Playground Games. With Forza Horizon 5, the team has their sights set on the most diverse locale yet: Mexico.

But what about the biomes themselves? Spread out over a map that’s about one-and-a-half times the size of Forza Horizon 4’s, the 11 biomes represent the most diverse map a Forza Horizon game has ever delivered. Let’s take a closer look:
Canyon
You might recognize this as the biome that was shown in the Forza Horizon 5 reveal trailer in June. It’s filled with rock formations patterned with unique striations, many of which erode into hoodoos that are only found in the canyon. Fun fact: each of the biomes have unique audio and the canyon has more echoes than any of the others.
Tropical Coast
This might be what you think of when you imagine a tropical Mexican vacation. Filled with palm trees, seagulls, white sand beaches and calm waters, it feels a lot like a postcard come to life. At least that’s the case until you reach storm season, which completely changes how you need to navigate it. Watch out for flying palm trees!
Farmland
Unlike the flatter or drier farmland found in some of the previous Forza Horizon games, these rolling hills are filled with lush vegetation, fruit-bearing trees, and wide, shallow rivers. You’ll have plenty of fences to smash through and picturesque homesteads to explore while you’re cruising through here.
Arid Hills
As you might suspect given the name, this biome is full of dry grasses on rolling hills and plains, providing plenty of open spaces to drive across if you feel like off-roading. One of the coolest features in this biome is a lake that actually dries up in the winter season, opening up shortcuts via fast passages and secret areas.
Jungle
Filled with lush, dense vegetation and towering trees that let beautiful rays of sun through the canopy, this biome also sports some impressive waterfalls and winding rivers. There are also a number of hidden temples in this area, all of which are based on real locations in Mexico.
Living Desert
In a first for the Forza Horizon series, Forza Horizon 5 features a cactus desert that’s full of towering saguaros. There are also a number of rock formations and rock piles that are unique to the area. As the name implies, it’s full of life and features plenty of flowers and wildlife.
Rocky Coast
While the tropical coast features lots of trees and vegetation, this one has a completely different vibe. Since there aren’t many trees, you’ll get a full view of the ocean and some excellent views of the sun setting at the end of the day. As a bonus to all you golfers out there, you can even take a spin around (read: through) a golf course.
Sand Desert
Full of towering sand dunes, this biome is perfect for cruising around in a buggy and carving into the sand. If you don’t feel like getting sand between your toes, many of the roads in this area feature long straightaways so there are plenty of opportunities to see how fast your favorite ride really goes.
Swamp
Although a swamp might not sound like the best place for a race, this biome’s shallow waters are a great place for it. The swamp also features a lot of mangrove trees that sport very thick, interconnected roots. You can actually smash through these during races, changing the route depending on whether or not your car can handle it.
Urban City of Guanajuato
Like a number of cities in Mexico, there’s a good deal of amazing architecture and vibrant colors everywhere you look. Unlike a lot of cities, however, it features a lot of rolling hills and tunnels, making for some really fun race routes. As with the Canyon, you’ll hear plenty of echoes bouncing around the city’s tight roadways.
Volcano
In another first for the Forza Horizon series, this massive mountain is situated right next to the Living Desert. It’s a very high-altitude volcano, so driving to the top is a unique experience that rewards players by seeing way off into the horizon. This is also the only place in the game that you’ll encounter snow, so be sure to pack an extra jacket.

Drive and Collect 4 Nissan Classics in Forza Horizon 5

Rediscover Nissan’s vibrant legacy with the four cars from across the Japanese brand’s automotive history coming to Forza Horizon 5 with our latest Car Pack: the Nissan Retro Rides Car Pack – now available on all platforms for $4.99/€4.99€/£3.99/AU$7.95/¥680.

1987 Nissan BE1

Here’s the car that started Nissan’s Pike Car line. A car that you could get and feel all warm and cozy: the 1987 Nissan BE1.

Ever think about the good ol’ days? Designer Naoki Sakai did so too, so it turned in a retro design meant to compete with other car brands that were taking over the Japanese market.

Meant to be used as an everyday car, Nissan used different materials to make the body of this car, including thermoplastic resin (that could resist small rock impacts), durasteel (mainly in the front), and ABS resin.

Buyers of this car were picked by lottery, because, of course, who wouldn’t want to drive home in a car with that much face card?

1989 Nissan S-Cargo

Available for purchase only by reservation, the 1989 Nissan S-Cargo is the Pike car meant for commercial use.

That hump on the back is indeed a loading area, like what you would find on a van. Thus, resulting in a car that looked like a snail, explaining why Nissan chose a name that sounded like escargot.

Only 8,000 units of this car were sold, making it a very rare JDM jewel and now you can get your hands on one of them with the Nissan Retro Rides Car Pack!

1989 Nissan Pao

Travel back to the late 80s and witness how fast orders for the 1989 Nissan Pao were made; they sold out in just three months with 51,667 applications for the unit.

Taking a closer look at this car will reveal inspiration taken from other car makers of the time, all put together into one practical package built to be as appealing as Japanese personal electronic devices.

Everything about this car evokes inexplicable appeal: the way the windows open, the optional sunroof, and the four delightful colors it came in are all part of what makes this tribute to retro cars a wonderful JDM to add to your collection!

1991 Nissan Figaro

Sold only in Nissan Cherry Stores back in the days of girl groups and grunge, the 1991 Nissan Figaro is a tiny, retro, convertible car built with a dash of luxury and extravagance.

The highlight of this car’s retro design is found inside. The console and dials are built in a beautiful white color with some chrome details found in frames and the steering wheel. The elegant lever at the center console could put some modern luxury cars to shame.

It may have been built to appeal to retro car fans; however, the Figaro came equipped with the latest technology for the time, such as air conditioning and a CD player.

Available in colors that represent the four seasons, the Figaro is a ride to enjoy all year long.

Complete your collection and customize your favorite Nissan Pike Cars with this unique Car Pack available for purchase on its own or as a part of the Ultimate Car Pack Collection Bundle!

The Nissan Retro Rides Car Pack is not included in Forza Horizon 5 Premium Edition.

Horizon Realms Reward Cars

Unlock these four new reward cars by earning Accolades on each of the 12 Realms available in this new update. This collection of rewards comes with amazing power and perhaps more wheels than you expected.
2024 Lamborghini Revuelto
The raging bull goes hybrid with the latest addition to its exotic hyper car collection: the 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto.

The total power output of this car is the largest of any Lambo ever: 1001 bhp. 814 horsepower comes from the V12 engine set in the middle of the car, and the rest comes from three electric motors (two mounted on the front axles and one in the gearbox).

Rear-wheel steering and improved stability make the Revuelto handle corners like a breeze.

Plug into the madness of Lamborghini’s ultimate hybrid drive with the Lamborghini Revuelto.
2023 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato
Lamborghini takes to the dirt with the 2023 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato! The Italian brand’s icon of the roads gets off-roading modifications to take the dirt roads by storm.

The Huracán Sterrato marks a very important moment in time for Lamborghini. It is the last “special edition” of the Huracán; it is the last Lambo to use the iconic V10 engine; and it is the first time Lamborghini put a Rally button on a coupé.

The first noticeable changes come with adding a new air intake on the roof of the car and removing the side intakes to prevent the car from breathing too much dirt. Next comes a modified version of the classic V10 engine that puts out 601 horsepower!

Flip the off-road switch in the raging bull, available in Horizon Realms!
2018 Lotus Exige Cup 430
The ultimate Lotus experience has arrived at the Horizon Festival with the 2018 Lotus Exige Cup 430, an even stronger and loonier version of the Exige.

Hidden in plain sight within the car’s name is its first impressive stat: the horsepower. The Exige Cup 430 produces 430 horsepower dispatched by a 3.5-litre V6 engine. While that number might not sound crazy, when it’s paired up with the car’s extreme lightweight and improved downforce, the 430 reaches 100 kph in about 3.3 seconds.

Designed to fulfill your deepest track fantasies, the Exige Cup 430’s gorgeous design and crazy speed will not disappoint racing fans eager to dominate the courses of the Horizon Festival.
2022 Hennessey Mammoth 6x6
Trumpeting its way towards the Horizon Festival comes a speed behemoth with a prehistoric attitude. The 2022 Hennessey Mammoth 6x6 is the bulkier and meaner version of the RAM TRX built by Hennessey’s mad scientists.

In case it wasn’t obvious enough, the Mammoth was built to dominate any terrain conceivable by its driver. The Hennessey team fitted a 6X6 rear axle locking differential, upgraded suspension, and 20-inch wheels.

True to fashion, the Mammoth can also storm a track and score more than impressive times with its 1000 horsepower and 969 lb-ft torque thanks to several improvements made on its engine, including a 2.5-liter supercharger.

Become the king of the Ice Age with the Hennessey Mammoth 6x6!
