Devlog #1: Horse Auction House & Training Arena!
Hi everyone! Thank you all so much for your support since I announced The Ranch of Rivershine last month! Since then, I’ve been working on a few features I’ll be sharing with you all today!
Auction House
Welcome to the Rivershine auction house! Here you’ll be able to purchase new horses and sell your own horses. However, get ready to outbid other buyers if you really want to win a horse!
Horses available for purchase are separated in four different tiers, which determines their skill levels, coat rarity and value. Higher tiers will be unlocked in the auction house as you progress through the game and increase Rivershine’s popularity! You’ll also be able to sell horses at the auction house. The starting price is set by the auctioneer based on your horse's skill level, health and coat color. Depending on your luck, your horse might sell for its lowest price or it might start a bidding war between the buyers!
I might also add weekly special auctions later on, where other animals such as donkeys, cows or goats could be sold, along with horses with unique coat colors!
Training Arena
An important part of raising your horses is to improve their skills, such as speed, endurance, flexibility and jump. Each of these can be improved by riding the horse and practicing different activities. While horses can be trained everywhere, such as around the town or on a forest trail, the arena is always an efficient way to do it.
When entering the arena, you’ll be able to select different difficulties and obstacle styles. This will place a unique obstacle course in the arena for you to train your horse. Later on, I’ll also be adding western gymkhana courses such as barrel racing, pole weaving and keyhole racing!
Day & Night Cycle
Your life on the ranch will be set by the rhythm of each day. Wake up at sunrise, and be sure to be back in bed by midnight! Each passing day will also impact your horses as they’ll grow up & will need to be fed and brushed.
Later on, weekdays will also come into play as it will determine when stores are open, special events and the NPCs daily schedule. I’m also planning on adding seasons to change up the landscape around Rivershine!
Main Menu
I’ve been working on preparing the game for alpha access, which includes creating a main menu! Along with it I’ve added a save & load system, with multiple save slots available. This menu also includes an overview of your ranch, and you’ll be able to see the horses you left in the pasture walk around whenever you open the game back up!
Next Month
My plans for the upcoming month is to work on the inventory system and add foragable items around the ranch, such as wheat & oats to feed your horses. I’ll also start working on the town map, where you’ll find a variety of buildings such as shops, NPCs’ houses and the auction house! While The Ranch of Rivershine isn’t quite ready for an alpha access yet, I’ll be sure to keep you all posted once we can start doing a bit of playtesting!
If you’d like to see me work live on the game, be sure to visit my Twitch channel here! I’ll be happy to chat with you and answer questions about the development of the game. :)
