Inside Surveillance: Carentan

Howdy everyone! Today we're going to give you an inside look at one of our maps: Carentan.

Carentan was one of the most famous engagements the 101st Airborne Division fought in during the invasion of normandy, made quite famous by various World War 2 series and movies. Our take on Carentan is certainly inspired by such depictions and stories told of the battle.

In this post we're gonna take you on a tour of the main areas of the map.

Note that the map is still unfinished, and some areas still lack some touching up.

The first objective is Farm. A small farm surrounded by fields held by the germans. The allies have 3 avenues of attack. The mainroad along the north. The fields to the left of the farm, and the gully to the southeast.

Mainroad.

The Entrance to main road. Here the allies can take a covered route to get to the main road, or engage directly from the dirt road.

The Hay Fields.

Gully.

Farm Courtyard.

The second objective the Allies must capture is the Cow shed on the northwest, while also having to destroy the 88 on the field to the north just across the road from the Cow Shed. The allies can charge up the main road, or push toward the apple orchard right of the road. They also have two side paths to flank around german positions to the far left and the far right.

Far right path.

Apple Orchard.

Main Road.

Far Left Path.

Flak 88 Field.

Cow Shed Area.

After the allies have taken the Cow Shed and destroyed the Flak 88, they can move into the town proper, and fight on the outskirts for control the famous Cafe de Normandie, the Factory Warehouse, and of course, the Pharmacy. The Allies can push through the fields flanking the main road or head through the road on the far right and flank the German Positions.

Main Road.

Piano Junction.

After Taking the entrance to the town, the Allies must clear their way to the trainstation, but they'll have to push through the heavily garrisoned Town Hall. From field fighting to close quarters urban combat! The allies must push through the main street, or the two side allies to break into the Town hall and clear it out.

Right alley flank.

Town Hall Plaza.

Town Hall Entrance.

After clearing the German garrison at the Town Hall, the Allies have one last push to make to reach to Train Station. They'll have to push through the main avenue to reach the station, or fight through the abandoned houses and backyards to reach the station. Note that this are is still being worked on.

Main Avenue.

Station Park.

Backyards.

Station Side Access.

Station Entrance.

That's all for today's Inside Surveillance on Carentan! Keep in mind everything's still subject to change, but you can get an early look at what awaits you once you strap up and head feet first into the Battle of Carentan in WWII Online: Chokepoint!

Thank you all for reading, and hope to see you again on the next Inside Surveillance.

See you on the battlefield!

New Rail Car

Introducing our new "Rail Car" for WWII Online: Chokepoint's Carentan map. We are always aiming for the most immersive game experiences, and this one nails it.

Near the end sequence of Carentan you will find the railway there (which is currently in development). These not only add to the environment to make you feel like you are there but they also server as good cover and concealment. A lot of great fighting on that last objective takes place between here so you are guaranteed to run into this object at some point.

Here it is in-game and this is a test shot used by the artist to showcase it within engine.

Willys Jeep - In Development

We're currently working on new artwork for WWII Online: Chokepoint which will then be made available for WWII Online 2.0 (you can safely assume all artwork will be done in this manner), and today we'd like to show you the progress of the famous, "Willys Jeep." This is an early work in progress, and thanks to your continued support through subscriptions, new possibilities are coming. We have two work in progress screenshots contained within the article for you to see!
WILLYS JEEP
Everyone can recognize the Willys Jeep, it is one of the most iconic vehicles ever built. We're adding this into WWII Online: Chokepoint initially as a static object for the purposes of populating the environment scene, but there's nothing to suggest that we couldn't build a working vehicle from it in time. Did we just say vehicles in WWII Online: Chokepoint? We did - and it is a goal of ours, but we are not at that point... "yet."

This model can be expanded by an animator to include moving pieces (which is part of the normal build process anyways) and our artist developing this (SADGUY) is being very particular to consider that in the future, which will make the animator's job easier once this matures more.

But for now, again, expect this to be a static object initially in WWII Online: Chokepoint.

We want to emphasize that this is a work in progress and more detail on the model is inbound. This USAAF jeep on the left was a photo taken at the Madras Oregon Air Museum, where they have a tremendous collection of warbirds still able to fly.

Here's a great side shot showing a bit of the interior and exterior. We'll continue adding more items to this, but it is unlikely it'll receive the canopy on top.

So, what do you think? Are you excited about the continued development into the future that CRS has taken? Let us know!

Meanwhile, we'd like to direct your attention to how you could be helping to support great efforts like these continue.
