Dev update #3 - Meet Lady Bliss

Hi!

With September arriving, we're ready to show you - and cast more light too - on our main antagonist of Liberte, Lady Bliss.

This character was firstly designed as "a colossal monster, covered in mushrooms and plants, bearing some resemblance to a human being". From that point onwards, we've been iterating the idea, working on e enhancements and building a key character of the narrative.

Lady Bliss is an extremely intelligent being that arrives at Paris (seemingly) out of nowhere. In the beginning, we won't reveal her origins, and her entire backstory is only known after you've discovered the narrative of all factions - then, the pieces of the puzzle finally align. Lady Bliss can communicate with selected people through telekinesis, and she's responsible for the Bliss that spreads in Paris - the intricate maze of strange, mystic gardens that pop up in the city.

People, who enter the Bliss become infected, and achieve a horrifying version of nirvana. What they begin to experience is pure joy, but that's Lady Bliss sedating them, only to turn them into part of this massive biomass she uses to grow.

Given our inspirations rooted in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Lady Bliss represents some of the features commonly known in cosmic horrors in terms of her appearance too. Notice her tentacles, and how she uses her victims to literally construct her own body. At the same time, she's one with nature, therefore the unique combination of human flesh, plants, and fungus tissue in her design.

Some say that the monster come from the hell below, while others believe it's a God that came to Paris to wash away the sins of the royalty.

As found in the notes of one of the Parisians who witnessed Lady Bliss' arrival:

"Nothing scared me more than this walking wrath. It's been sent by the Gods, or might even be one. People were like toys for it, as it walked among the houses and churches, turning everything green, lush, leaving a scent of flowers and joy. But I've seen what it did to people - they lost their minds, took their clothes off, and started dancing around the wicked trees, made of plants and humans. Trembling and terrified, I hid, there's chaos in the city now.

I know that.

We are lost."

Join Playtest #2!

Hey Revolutionists!

We're happy to announce that our 2nd playtest is ON. You have the chance to take Liberte for a spin until 10th of September (Friday, 6 PM GMT).

Here's. few of the things we have packed into this second round.

For the 1st time, you'll have a chance to test the rogue-like mechanics. Now we can officially call ourselves a roguelike game, yay!

The new roguelike means we've developed an entirely new hotspot mission too. After the mission in which you decide to secure medicine supplies for the Rebels, or protect them for the Tribe people, you will have a chance to choose between Rebels and the Crown now, in the mission called THE LAMBALLE HOUSE. This one is based on the real events when one of the members of French aristocracy tried to escape the angry mob.

New gameplay mechanics will make this mission a true challenge.

Since we've added this 2nd hotspot mission, we also designed a new enemy - Royal Army Officer - to the missions played against the Crown.

Along with royal voltigeurs, RAOs are supporting enemies, armed with firearms and flares that they use to call reinforcements when things begin to look bad for them. The AI supporting the Crown soldiers supports some of the military strategies - the voltigeurs will try to line up with their rifles so beware their coordinated attacks.

You will want to watch out for the flare too, because not reacting on time will surely make the skirmish harder since the RAO bring reinforcements.

Along the Royal Army Officer, we've welcomed the first boss - Torstein The Butcher. A hefty man who's just as agile in melee, close combat, as he's dangerous when throwing a pair of chains that tie his enemies to the ground. For now, Torstein appears as a boss on both sides.

New playtest will also expand on the narrative mechanics. Our characters will now join you on your run, sharing their perspective on the city developments, and possibly helping you out while completing a mission of them. This means an entirely new approach towards dialogue UI.

A few more changes, updates and additions will be available for you, but let's not spoil all the fun yet.

One last piece of info for you is a special invitation to our playtest. Join three consecutive playtest - starting with this new one - and we'll provide you with a free copy of Liberte upon Early Access release.

That's our thanks for helping us make the this project come true!

Dev Update #2 - Rebels HQ is ready!

Hey there Revolutionists!

Summer's been busy, so here's a sneak peek into one of the things we've been working on. Our first player's HQ, the Theatre that was taken over by the Rebels shortly after the revolution started in Paris, was recently designed and polished.

From the start, we've been aiming for a burlesque look, inspired by the interior design of the 19th century France, as well as the over-the-top look of the 1950s and the bizarre burlesque-inspired shows. We wanted this place to capture Ana Tallien's zaniness, but also provide a climatic setting for the players who choose to support Rebels.

Since Liberte is a roguelike, this is the spot where your character will respawn after the run ends. In the Early Access version, we're planning to keep the Theatre as the main HQ for all runs, however, as the game will expand, we plan to build one such HQ for each of the factions.

In this newly designed HQ, we wanted the foyer to be in ruins, barricaded and guarded by the Rebels.

The interior part, the main hall, is where the Rebels Leader Ana Tallien hides, along with her brain of the operations, Max The Professor. The lighting focuses on Max's plans, and this place will be busy with their henchmen preparing booby traps and weapons to fuel the rebellion. Take a look at Ana preaching the rebellion's virtues below.

Much of the work revolved around volumetric lights, creating the effect of dim, steamy interiors. From the game design perspective, the Theatre's located in the city centre, and will be transformed as you guys progress with the story.
