Recorded Stream About Corsairs Legacy Game on Steam

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Today you'll see the results we have achieved as of November 2021. The game is in active development, there is a lot of work to be done, and in the near future, we plan to release a demo.

In the recording of the stream you will be able to see:

  • Bridgetown’s coast and port: we have the shipyard building, warehouses, and the place where ships are constructed. A ship and the fort are made based on real-life blueprints and upon recommendations of our historical consultant.
  • Sailing mode: you'll see our first ship where all key physics mechanics are already present. All ropes, masts, and sails are also implemented. Currently, we’re working on adding more animations for the crew and we’ll also have a helmsman who will be standing by the tiller.
  • Part of the jungle and ruins: right now, we’re placing objects at the location, and the next thing we’ll do is optimize them. The current FPS is decent, but we’d like to increase it.
  • Perudo Game: We played the popular pirate dice game.

Historical Accuracy in Corsairs Legacy Game

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
In the previous devlog, we talked about camera placement and made a poll asking you whether it’s important for you to have the character in the center of the screen. To our surprise, most of you want the character to be in the center, so we added this option to the game.

We thought that the side view is better and more convenient, but after receiving a lot of comments about changing camera placement we started a poll. If we see that the audience reacts to some changes, we try to take that into account. We did this when working on the battle system, animations, and camera.

In the very first devlogs, we said that you can support our YouTube channel on Patreon. And today, we want to thank everyone who contributed to the channel’s development. Thank you Speedle, Vitaly Maslov, Turflurch, Crush, Karnazh, Maxim Shishkanov, Andrey Grinchuk, Litwin, and special thanks to Eugene Plita. Today, under the theme of historical accuracy, we’ll discuss how much will Corsairs Legacy be consistent with historical facts.

While developing the game, we try to be consistent with historical reality and realism as much as possible. At the same time, we try not to get carried away, so that the game would be interesting for players in the first place.

Learning history and consulting with experts lets us get a better understanding of life in the Caribbean at that time. In development, we prefer to rely on facts instead of fantasy. Our channel and the game itself are educative in nature. Corsairs Legacy lets all who play our game or visit our channel learn something new about their favorite topic.

While playing Corsairs Legacy, you’ll learn that:

  • the currency and the economy are as close as possible to the reality of that time;
  • you’re using the blade and pistol that were used in the Caribbean at the time of piracy;
  • you’re sailing on the ships created according to the blueprints of that time;
  • the soldiers wear the same uniform that was relevant at that time, and they shoot the same musket that was used at that time on duty;
  • the forts look as close as possible to the real-life buildings;
  • in the tavern, you’re playing the same game that was popular among sailors and pirates of that time, and the rules are the same;
  • and even rooftops will correspond to that time and will be interspersed with moss, like it was at that time due to the climate.

In discussing different aspects of the game with our historical consultant we also talked about the appearance of the characters. As mentioned in the comments, the main hero has facial hair, even though it was considered unacceptable for a man at that time. Our consultant shared pictures of people of that time. We noticed that they don’t look very presentable or familiar to our perception. Given that, and the fact that we bought models and have a limited budget, we decided to forgo the historical accuracy when it comes to the appearance of characters. We create more spectacular and familiar images of the residents of the Caribbean, just like the creators of other projects about pirates: “Black Sails”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and so on.

We were creating the images for our characters partly inspired by historical records, literary works, and, of course, the book “Treasure Island”. In this way, the game will combine real and fictional pirates.

Similarly, to create comfortable mechanics for players in the sailing simulator, we don’t implement hardcore battles, where each battle would last at least a few hours.

We try to create a historical game about pirates, where the gameplay comes first, and then we try to analyze and recreate historical facts.

Answers To Questions About Corsairs Legacy From Steam

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Hello everyone. In the previous devlog, we told you about our plans, and today, as promised, we’ll be answering audience questions from the last video and Steam.

By the way, we updated the game’s Discord server and created different channels for chatting, asking the developers questions, and game news. We’ll be happy to see you on the Corsairs Legacy server. You can find the link in the video’s description and the first pinned comment.

Let’s get to the questions.

  • Why aren’t we making an MMO?

Today, big studios are actively switching from developing single-player games to developing MMO projects and games as a service that must keep players playing for a long time. We think that developers who fill gameplay with mundane tasks are less likely to get players interested in their game. Our goal is to make a finished product with a good story, where each quest that players complete keep pushing the main hero forward. We’re creating an adventure that you would be able to go through without the need for level-up boosts or grinds. By the end of the story, the player could choose to keep playing and complete side quests, but that would be their choice and not the requirement for completing the game.

  • It would be nice to be able to place the camera at the center of the screen.

We think that placing the character on the side is more convenient for players, and it looks much better. But, in order to choose the best option, we started a new poll in the community tab on our YouTube channel. Also, feel free to leave comments with your opinions on the questions from this video, we’ll also take them into account.

  • We would like to see more detailed character models (the ones that were in the 3D editor from the previous video looked good, it would be great to see those models in the game).

We started with 34 bought models and are currently working on our own models for story characters. As the project grows, we’ll be making more of our own character models. Their quality is much higher than those that we bought at the start of the project development.

  • Will the grass be affecting performance drastically? Since the jungle shown in that video looks very succulent :)

Our first priority is performance, and the second is beautiful graphics. In the last six months, we’ve made over 10 different grass variations, to achieve good visuals with minimum use of computation. Indeed, the grass is one of the most computation-heavy elements on the screen, since grass contains a lot of blades and each of them casts a dynamic shadow and has a bunch of other effects (like subsurface scattering). We’ll probably change it more than once before the release while searching for a trade-off between beautiful graphics and performance.

  • Will there be a damage system for ships?

We plan to make ships damageable and we have two different approaches that we plan to test. But before making a decision, we must implement the fights and enemy AI. So, we’ll come back to this subject in the next devlogs.

  • It would be curious to see how waves are implemented, let’s say, during poor weather or storm.

We’re currently working on a logic that is responsible for waves according to the Beaufort scale.

  • Will it be possible to walk around the ship, go down to the hold, or go to your cabin in sailing mode?

We’re looking into these options.

  • Will there be loading screens while going between buildings and the jungle? To be honest, it would be better without them, it’s the year 2021, after all.

Currently, the island in Corsairs Legacy is one place where we dynamically load locations within the player’s line of sight. That said, some locations will require loading screens. Primarily, this is due to some locations having different lighting settings. For example, the tavern and the prison.

  • What will boarding look like in the game?

When it comes to sea gameplay, this is the most difficult question for us at the moment. We have 3 concepts that we’re planning to test, but only after getting the sea battle mode done.

  • Will there be support for Xbox One and 360?

As of now, the game will only be released for PC.

  • It would be great to have the ability to change language in the game settings, instead of restricting it to an installer or Steam.

We already implemented the choice of language in the game settings. When you first start the game, it will automatically detect a language, then you’ll be able to change it in the settings.

  • Are you looking into releasing the game in Early Access on Steam?

The game will be released in Early Access, then we’re going to collect feedback and try to polish it in 3-4 months, and then we’ll release the full game.

  • What will the battle system be like in the game?

Currently, the development of the battle system is frozen. You can see its current state in the previous devlog where we talked about it. We’re planning to get back to it after we’re happy with the smoothness of the main hero’s animations.

When Will the Corsairs Legacy Game Be Released?

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Hello, everyone who loves games about pirates. In April, we announced Corsairs Legacy and the strategy of three independent games, where each successive game should include the features of previous ones. We stated that our budget is limited, our team is small, and once in two weeks, we will be informing the audience about the development progress on the game’s official Russian-language YouTube channel. You might have noticed that English-language videos come out much later than the Russian-language ones. The thing is, we’re spending extra time translating scripts from Russian to English, doing a voice-over, and montage. We try our best to release videos as quickly as possible and keep our English-speaking audience updated, without delay. That’s why we release one video per week on our English-language channel!

In the past 6 months that you’ve spent with us, we tried to meet your expectations and have been publishing videos about the development progress.

During this time, developers of another two games about pirates joined the Corsairs Legacy team.

Expanding our team and increasing the project’s budget allowed us to reach the next level of development, spending more time on the game’s details, to create a better product as a result.

We started modeling unique locations, and buildings created our characters, added the ability to change clothes, increased the graphics level, started to make ship models, and proceeded to implement sailing mode.

The current state of the project doesn’t allow us to make a quality release this year, and, most likely, the last 20% of the work on the land mode might take much longer than the first 80%. And we’ll have to spend a long time bringing the game to the final state. At the same time, in order to keep up with the planned schedule, we started developing the sailing mode in parallel.

To date, a team of 15 people is working on Corsairs Legacy, and inside the team, we formed a separate branch that is responsible for developing the sailboat simulator. We started modeling our ships and we plan to demonstrate a high-tech game about sailboats, made with the use of real ships blueprints.

Due to the changes related to the need of finalizing the land part to satisfy new requirements, we realized that it makes sense to combine releases of the first two games and give players a quality product with land and sea gameplay right away.

We’ll tell you about the sailboat simulator in a separate devlog.

We actively continue developing the game and we’ll be regularly informing you about the development progress in devlogs on our YouTube channel. Also, we’re announcing the updated plan of releases, according to which the first and second games will be released together in 2022.

In the near future, we’ll show you a gameplay trailer of the game.

We decided that Corsairs Legacy will be released in 7 languages: English, Ukrainian, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Russian. Right now, we’re actively working on the game’s localization.

Also, before the release, we plan to launch beta testing of the game, but we’ll tell you more about that in early 2022.

Tavern in the Corsairs Legacy

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
The spirit of freedom, cheap rum, and fascinating adventures, promising untold riches. These are the things that inspire all kinds of adventurers to face their destiny in the Caribbean.

That’s why we love games about pirates. The Caribbean is the place where danger awaits the hero at every turn, however, experienced adventurers, who gathered a loyal crew, see colossal opportunities ahead that may outweigh any related risk.

The town tavern. A place where paths of all adventurers meet. A place where promising meetings happen, deals are made and new alliances are formed. Today’s devlog is dedicated to the first tavern in Corsairs Legacy, which soon each fan of pirate adventures will be able to visit.

Matthew Cline, the owner of the tavern “Silver fin”. For over 18 years, he’s been running the only proper place to stay overnight in Bridgetown with good booze and decent chowder. Due to not very presentable look, this man makes the first impression of a drunk who pours himself a drink first and only then serves his clients. But everyone who had business with Cline knows that the appearance is often deceiving.

18 years of managing a profitable business, where all employees are well-schooled and disciplined, is really rare for the Caribbean. Cline loves to count money, but an enterprising mind knows a fine line between thrifty conduct of business and cheapness that creates more problems.

Rich guests from the Old World tried to kick “Silver fin” out of the business on several occasions, opening other taverns in Bridgetown and using all possible methods of influence, paying out of their pocket. Unfortunately for them, old fellow Cline knows how to take a punch. There were three attempts to get him out of the business but to no avail. Sooner or later, visitors run out of money and for some reason, new taverns only bring losses. Disappointed entrepreneurs had to sell the property for nothing and quickly return to the Old World. After all, they just come and go, while Matthew Cline is running the tavern, gathering some of the most influential people in the town under his roof. He knows almost everything that happens in the colony.

The last failed entrepreneur sold his newly built tavern for peanuts to the owner of a local brothel, Nicholas Briggs. It’s not hard to guess how soon the newly acquired building turned into the abode of lust and debauchery. Although, it’s a story for another time. Getting back to “Silver fin”…

There is a lot of space on the first floor for those who want to eat well, drink some booze or hold a business meeting. There are a lot of locals here at all times.

Calm Nick watches the basement door, letting through only those who were accepted by Matthew Cline himself. Yeah, the mysterious basement is one of the people’s favorite topics for rumors. In any case, despite all the tall tales around the private club, everyone who has access to it doesn’t answer any questions.

Calm Nick got his nickname for his calmness with which he breaks the arms of anyone who wants to brawl and damage the property of “Silver fin”. Nick is a former soldier of the English Crown who was demoted from the garrison for his excessive brutality on duty. He found his calling in “Silver fin”. Let’s not even talk about the ability to freely show his harsh temper and receive a decent salary for it, even for Bridgetown.

Let’s move on to the second floor. The most common people here are sailors who have chosen to try their luck playing dice. In “Silver fin”, in a cozy and uncrowded atmosphere, anyone may put their month’s pay on the line and try to double it, while playing the popular Caribbean game Perudo.

All gambling tables are divided by the skills of players. Depending on their reputation, each player goes to the table where other players with the same skills are. Beginners play for pennies, but it’s possible to make, or lose, large amounts of money at the professionals’ table.

For visitors, there are guest rooms on the third floor of “Silver fin”. Cline really jacks up the prices, so the locals can’t afford to rent these rooms. On the other hand, for visitors who are willing to pay more due to the lack of alternatives, there are always plenty of free rooms.
