Frostpunk 2 review - a brutal, enhanced survival game sequel

Strategy games are about making choices. Some of these choices are complicated - when to go to war or what type of civilizational goals to embrace - and some are simpler, like choosing which kind of military unit to train or specific building to construct. Frostpunk 2, a game about surviving an apocalyptic eternal winter, is clever in that it gives every one of these types of choices, hard or easy, emotional weight and dramatic stakes.

Watching your empire grow in the best city builders can feel like a true power fantasy, but in Frostpunk 2 it's both a necessity for survival and a terrifying mantle of responsibility. After a few small delays, the frostbitten strategy, management, and survival game has finally arrived, and it's looking like good news for developer 11 bit studios. Just one day after launch, the Frostpunk 2 player count has already topped the highest concurrent peak ever reached by its predecessor on the Valve platform.

TEMPORARY FIX - AUDIO CRACKLING ISSUE

We’ve noticed some of you are experiencing occasional audio crackling issues so we’ve decided to create a temporary separate branch we called ‘whiteout’ for now, so you can still enjoy your time in the frostland during the weekend.

If you’re encountering CPU throttling issues, this temporary fix could also help you with that.
You can access the whiteout branch by going to Frostpunk 2 in your Steam Library and clicking Properties -> Betas, and then switching to the whiteout branch.

For now we’ve managed to implement this temporary solution on Steam and Windows only, but we’ll work on a permanent solution first thing Monday morning and implement it in the main branch ASAP!

How do you start a Frostpunk 2 colony? Frostpunk is one of the best strategy games around, and the sequel takes everything up a notch, expanding the difficult, the world, and your interactions with your colonists. Due to the larger area, you can even explore nearby regions and start brand-new colonies as you find a way towards a new world.

As you unlock the Frostland and gather more Frostland teams in the city-building game, you start to find more useful areas, whether they're just ripe for looting or a self-sufficient area in which to build a new city.
