Artillery Rework Update

Hello commanders,

As we announced in the previous DevBlog, it’s gameplay talk again! In today’s DevBlog, we’ll specifically focus on the upcoming artillery rework.

Our intention is to roll out a general free-to-all update containing the artillery rework, along with the launch of the WARNO - LANDJUT expansion. Both are just around the corner.

Let’s go!
Artillery Rework
Why is the artillery overhaul in WARNO necessary? Which gameplay issues do we aim to address with the update? Check out our initial announcement from a few months back below for some more of the dirty deets.

https://steamcommunity.com/games/1611600/announcements/detail/497196316182447458

In brief: we wanted to make artillery gameplay more fun, while giving all players extra tactical options - either how to use artillery systems or how to counter them.

So, have there been any changes between the original reveal and the soon-to-be-released update?

Not many: we have stayed close to the previous set of updates we intended to implement.

There are a few adjustments, however. Let’s go through the different elements we proposed, and let’s see how things have progressed.
Counter-Battery Radar
One of the new traits coming with the artillery rework is the Counter-Battery Radar, a new unit type that can detect incoming enemy artillery fire within its area of operations. You can already do this in WARNO - eyeballing trajectories - but what this particular radar-based unit does is reveal the shooting location while also allowing you to identify the type of unit firing at you.

Now, technically, an observant and experienced WARNO player can see what kind of incoming fire is threatening his positions by looking at the explosion, as well as the trajectory to see what kind of projectile is hurtling towards their units. But it takes time, and you need to zoom in on a potential firing location to see where the enemy unit is located. A tough task, taking valuable seconds in the middle of a war zone.

The new Counter-Battery Radar will make this operation much quicker. You've got to act quickly, though, as the moment the unit ceases to fire, the enemy position will be gone.
Artillery Commanders
We previously mentioned that we wanted to introduce a new unit type to WARNO, the so-called Artillery Commanders. This concept was taken from Steel Division 2.

For now, we have put this introduction on hold. Why? We don’t want to buff artillery further and risk a return to the original situation where artillery units would become too hard to counter.

The Eugen will first check how the general update and new gameplay mechanics work with artillery units, before we decide on a go-no go for Artillery Commanders.
Trajectories
As we said in the initial announcement, mortars would receive new trajectories. This is still part of the plan.

The work on these high-parabolic short-range systems also gave us the opportunity to review the trajectories of all artillery pieces. So we took to tinkering to improve both realism and the tuning of a weapon’s accuracy across the board.

This means that all artillery trajectories will be affected by these changes. See below for some before-and-after shots.

Mortars: will feature a major change to their trajectories at short range.

Howitzers: more realistic trajectories that are less flat and form a clearer arc.

MLRS: fewer changes overall, but their trajectories will be more arched and much less flat.
Set-up and Displacement Timer
We are still planning to include a set-up and displacement timer.

In case you forgot: artillery will have a set-up delay before firing and a displacement timer to pack up the system in order to move out again. This delay will be identical for all artillery types, whether towed or self-propelled.

This change means that towed artillery, being more fragile, isn’t further penalized, and self-propelled guns don’t become even more dominant. This update will make artillery more vulnerable, but not useless, with the delay creating windows of opportunity for counterplay.
When is it coming?
The big elephant in the room: when is the artillery rework coming? We intend to release it at the same time as WARNO - LANDJUT. Once live, we’ll keep a close watch and make any necessary adjustments pronto if needed.

Everything we mentioned above is subject to change, and it still needs to run the gamut of our QA team and Strike Team testing.

On a slightly related note, our tests with the Danish HE version of the Carl Gustav recoilless rifle and the USMC SMAW have proven explosively successful. They will also receive the Demolition trait, plus we’ve added Canada (another user of the HE variant of the Carl Gustav) to the weapon’s roster. They will also receive the new unit - same as Denmark - called the PIONIER (CarlG).
WARNO - LANDJUT
WARNO - LANDJUT will bring 8 new Divisions to WARNO, playable in Skirmish and Multiplayer, with one brand-new nation, Denmark.

New and Updated Units and Traits

Hello all,

We are back! In today’s DevBlog, we’ll detail some of the gameplay changes coming to WARNO, specifically new traits and associated units.

One of the traits is brand-new; the other is an existing trait which will soon be available in many more WARNO divisions.

Let’s go.
Instructor Class of Units
First up is the Instructor trait, which is already available in a limited fashion with the American GREEN BERETS in the West German Territorialkommando Süd and on the CHIEFTAIN Mk. 1/4 as found with the British Home Defence Region London (of Nemesis #4 - Capital Defence).

In case you didn’t know: the Instructor trait operates between a Leader unit and a Military Police one. An Instructor will boost the performance of nearby units of the same type, granting 1+ Veterancy. Crucially, it also removes the Reservist trait and its drawbacks. This means you can beef up your units, especially second-echelon cheaper ones, but only of the same type.

We can reveal that new Instructor units are coming to other divisions with the next major update, to coincide with WARNO - LANDJUT’s release.

  • The French 152e Division d’Infanterie of
    Nemesis #2 - Plateau d’Albion
will receive Instructor units to boost the TANK and INF categories, specifically the MARSOUINS INSTRUCT. will replace the CMDT MARSOUINS, and the AML-90 INSTRUCT. will replace one card of AML-90 CP.
  • The East German and Polish Rügener Gruppierung will get the LehrPz T-72 replacing the KPz. T-72.
  • The Czechoslovakian 303. Tanková Divize of WARNO - SOUTHAG will receive the new T-72M-E2 INSTRUKT replacing the T-72M-E2.
New Counter-Battery Radar Trait
Now, onwards to a new trait: Counter-Battery Radar. The more observant among you might have already spotted this new trait in the Strike Team’s recent streaming of the two new Danish divisions coming with WARNO - LANDJUT.

The new Counter-Battery Radar will snugly fit as part of the upcoming artillery rework (we’ll get back to this update in next week’s DevBlog). This new trait will also make counter-battery play much easier.

Units with the Counter-Battery Radar trait will have a large area of effect. Any enemy artillery projectile fired within this area will be revealed, regardless of terrain. The radar tracks incoming projectiles, pinpointing the exact ground position of the unit that fired them. If the enemy unit ceases firing, the marked position will be lost.

Units with the new trait will appear in several WARNO divisions. In some cases, they will be applied to existing radar-equipped platforms.

  • The ubiquitous NATO’s GREEN ARCHER (under various designations), will gain the trait. As a trade-off, it will see a downgrade of its Exceptional Optics, however. The Danish Jyske Division, Dutch CKLA, American 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, British Home Defence Region London, the West German 6. Panzergrenadier and Territorialkommando Süd will be affected.
  • The Warsaw Pact’s brand-new SNAR-10 model will be featured with the East German Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse Bezirk Erfurt and Berliner Gruppierung, Polish 15. Dywizja Zmechanizowana, Soviet 157-ya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya, and the Czechoslovakian 303. Tanková Divize.
  • The brand-new French VAB RATAC will appear in the French Division du Rhin (the current RASIT placeholder model will soon be updated).
WARNO - LANDJUT
WARNO - LANDJUT will bring 8 new Divisions to WARNO, playable in Skirmish and Multiplayer, with one brand-new nation, Denmark.

LANDJUT Update

Hello, hello, hello commanders.

We return with a brand-spanking new WARNO - LANDJUT DevBlog, highlighting the latest rounds of updates and improvements finding their way into our upcoming expansion.
WARNO - LANDJUT
While our 3D artists are busy finishing the last batch of new models (see below), we've brought the following changes to the WARNO - LANDJUT’s existing roster of divisions. This is mostly thanks to new discoveries, research, or helpful suggestions from the community and Strike Team. Now, there is much more happening under the hood, but we wanted to highlight the biggest elements in today’s post.
NATO
The Danes
The Danish military was one of the few NATO nations using the Carl Gustav recoilless rifle not only as an anti-tank weapon but also to fire HE rounds. Since the Danish divisions lack a flamethrower or assault gun that deals heavy close-quarters HE damage, this particular detail felt important enough to include in WARNO.

This is why both Danish divisions in WARNO - LANDJUT will receive a new INGENIØRER (CarlG) combat engineers squad, fielding the Gv m/75 (G3 battle rifle), one MG m/62 (MG-3 machine gun) and a Carl Gustav (HE) firing HE rounds.

Furthermore, we are experimenting with applying the Demolition trait not only to the HE-firing Carl Gustav but also the American SMAW, making them much more versatile in urban environments.

6. Panzergrenadier
Two major changes to this West German division:

Nemesis #8 - Second Chance - And the Winner is...

Hello!

It’s good to be back, commanders, especially when bringing the (rather hotly contested) results of the Nemesis #8 - Second Chance!

Without further ado… drum roll maestro please...
And the winner is…
Mind you, as the vote was for a single NATO and Warsaw Pact division, technically, there will be two winners! Which divisions will be featured in Nemesis #8?

NATO
The West German VfgTrpKdo 42.

Warsaw Pact
The Soviet 71-ya Tankovaya Diviziya.

That’s right, this means that Nemesis #8 - Second Chance matches Nemesis #6.3 - School’s Out!.

The full breakdown of the vote:
NATO
• The West German VfgTrpKdo 42 surged ahead with 31,68% of the ballot.
  • Followed closely for a time by the West German 12. Panzerdivision, which ended up capturing 24,99% of the vote.
  • With third place being taken by the French 27e Division d'infanterie Alpine with 18,26%.
  • Being chased hot on their heels by the British Support Command with 16,89%.
  • And the last spot being occupied by Dutch Beveiligende Strijdmacht with only 6,54% of the votes.
Warsaw Pact
• The Soviet 71-ya Tankovaya Diviziya captured your imagination with 37,43% of the votes.
  • Tailed closely by the Polish 5 Podhalańska Brygada WOWew, which managed to gain 29,8% of the ballot.
  • Third place was taken by the Soviet 34-ya Tankovaya Diviziya division with 13,05%.
  • With the fourth spot going to the Soviet PTRez with 12,97% of the vote.
Nemesis #8 - Second Chance
That makes it official, Nemesis #8 - Second Chance will consist of NATO’s VfgTrpKdo 42 and Warsaw Pact’s 71-ya Tankovaya Diviziya, both from Nemesis #6.3 - School’s Out!, and both featuring the Instructor-class of units. Read more about the battlegroups by following the link below.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1611600/view/510724241364091067

This means Nemesis #8 - Second Chance will feature new NATO units such as HEIMAT-JÄGER (PzF) squads, FACHLEHRERGRUPPE Instructors, the LEOPARD 2A4(B), a few experimental LEOPARD 2A4(D), LEHRLEOPARD 1A3A1 Instructor tanks, anti-air BO-105 BSH-1, SINGIT-capable UH-1D HES helos, with air support being provided by F-4T and F-4E.

On the Warsaw Pact’s side, the Nemesis DLC will contain new units such as
The BTR-50PUM-1 APC, INSTRUKTORY infantry squads (with Instructor trait), heavy BTR-55 APC, a variety of new REZ., or Reserve units, from infantry to tanks to weapon teams, INSTRUKTORY T-64A, INSTRUKTORY T-72A, and INSTRUKTORY T-72B Obr. 89 tanks, BTS-4A ZU-23-2 and ZIL-135M S-60, and older Su-24 strike aircraft.
WARNO - LANDJUT
We are also working on a new major expansion for WARNO: WARNO - LANDJUT. This expansion will bring 8 new Divisions to WARNO, playable in Skirmish and Multiplayer, with one brand-new nation, Denmark.

We are actively modelling the WARNO - LANDJUT models as we speak. Take a sneak peek below!
