Roadlike - what exactly is Death Roads: Tournament?

Welcome back to Death Roads: Tournament dev updates! Today we will discuss in more detail a unique blend of design building blocks that we have used to create our game. We have dubbed the genre “roadlike”, but its full description reads “turn-based tactics roguelike deckbuilder”. We know - it’s a mouthful, so let’s dive straight in!

A little bit of tactic…

Battles in Death Roads: Tournament mix elements of card and tactics games. These genres are turn-based, so the first part of our genre description is pretty straightforward. You control your car that is placed on a road sectioned like a grid. Unlike in regular tactics games, your sweet ride does not have any inherent actions. All the options are stored in different types of cards. Driver cards are available for a singular use each turn, and they make sure you are always able to perform the most basic actions like moving, changing gears and swapping other cards.

…add a pinch of cars to it…

Engine and Steering cards have varying sets of actions depending on the gear your car is currently on. Weapon cards let you attack opponents, provided you are in range to use them. Cards have their cost in Handling, and if you ever lose all of it, you enter Skid, drawing cards from a special deck and being at the mercy of chance. Each turn is a complicated puzzle and a balancing act between positioning, attacking, changing gears, influencing your hand and planning for future maneuvers.

…mix with the deck builder…

In order to become the top dog of futuristic vehicular skirmishes, you need to prepare your deck beforehand. The deckbuilding aspect appears here but with a twist on the basic blueprint. Instead of simply adding and removing singular cards, you build your deck by choosing components to be installed in your car that provide sets of cards and modify the vehicle's statistics. Each car has its body component that cannot be swapped, so make sure your additions fit the base you chose before the run has started!

…and sprinkle the roguelike - that's how roadlike was born!

Finally, we arrive at the last part - the roguelike element. Each attempt at succeeding in the Death Roads: Tournament has a different map outline, sets of enemies you encounter along the way, random events and components that will be awarded after winning battles. Also, if you fail, there is no trying again - you need to start from scratch.

We have designed Death Roads: Tournament to feel unique and familiar at the same time. We are very excited about what we have created and we can’t wait to hear your feedback. Good luck in the upcoming races!

Dev Update #1 Where will the road take us?

Welcome to Death Roads, drivers, the most dangerous race on this side of the Divided States of America. The Tournament may be going on, but we'd like to take a few moments before you participate. It would be good to know where we are currently on the route, right?

As already announced, Death Roads: Tournament is approaching its release on Steam in Early Access. We are not revealing a specific date yet, but be sure that it is closer than further. As we promised, we will shower you with an absolute avalanche of information about the project, so be prepared!
What is the current development status?
At this point, we can undoubtedly say that the core of the game has been tuned. Death Roads consists of three elements: progression on the world map, turn-based combat and deckbuilding. You choose your own path, compete with the opponents, and then choose rewards that will allow you to modify your vehicle in the garage. Along the way, you can get to the city, where you can come across, for example, another race participant who plays the role of a mini-boss, shops and fix stations where you can fix or upgrade your vehicle. That's it, in a nutshell. But is it true? You will find out about it by reading on!
What are the main features we are working on?
We are currently expanding the race to provide more attractions and less repetition. You can also count on additional vehicles and drivers, new types of enemies, dialogue events and the Final Boss. The latter is the apple of our eye, and we want it to be really exciting.

We are also adding more music and enriching the world map while polishing some parts of the game and fixing bugs. So as you can see, work on Death Roads: Tournament is going on full throttle! Early Access is just the beginning of the race, and we plan to diversify it even more in the future.
What is the road plan?
We plan to add new functionalities to differentiate the gameplay and give players new modifiers to get in the form of gadgets and sponsors to choose from at the beginning of the game. There will also be an unlock and achievement system. You can also count on "Driverpedia", where you can see your progress and get more information about your opponents.

Although Death Roads: Tournament is a turn-based production with cards, we want to reflect the realities of an actual, dangerous race. That's why we plan to add the weather mechanics over time and tell you the story of the tournament in an exciting way - because the last element is really important!

And see you in Death Roads!

Let's begin this race - Deah Roads coming to EA release!

Welcome to all fans of fast cars, dangerous racing and turn-based games. This is our first entry, and as you know, the first step is the hardest! Now that we have it behind us, it's time for the specifics.

Death Roads: Tournament is a game that combines turn-based gameplay with tactical elements, diversifying the whole thing with things known from the roguelike and deck-builders genres. Pretty crazy mix, right?

The result is a turn-based game about a blood-curdling TV tournament in which YOU will take part! You will have to rush ahead, eliminating enemies and watching out for various attractions along the way. All this to win the grand prize.

Death Roads: Tournament is nearing its Early Access debut. For this reason, expect regular information about the game: its mechanics and the story. So fasten your seat belts, for it will happen!
