Meet the main character | Remi

Remi’s return was never meant to be triumphant. His homeland is a fractured, haunted place—one that never truly let him go. And something lingers in the ruins, waiting.

He was only five years old when his mother smuggled him out of Hadea, a nation closed off from the world. No one was allowed in or out. But she made a choice—one that condemned her son to a life of questions. He understands why she did it. He knows she wanted him to have a better life, beyond the suffocating isolation of Hadea. But that knowledge does nothing to quiet the trauma of having been left behind.
He does not seek justice. He does not seek redemption. He seeks them. The parents who abandoned him. The nation that erased him. He needs to confront them.
Now, decades later, he has finally found his way back.

A Man Defined by What’s Missing

Remi grew up in Canada’s foster system, raised by strangers in a land that never truly felt like his own. All he carried from his past were the name of his birthplace—Jova—and the fact that his father was the village blacksmith. That, and a strange necklace he’s always kept with him.

When Remi joined the ON Peacekeeping Forces, it wasn’t out of duty, but as a means to an end. When Hadea plunged into civil war, he saw an opportunity—a chance to cross the border under the guise of a humanitarian mission. As the operation was being shut down, he deserted his post to slip into the country before the window closed.

The land he once belonged to should have been war-torn, divided by conflict. But what he finds is something far worse—something that defies all logic. The civil war he expected has been swallowed by a force he cannot explain. Each step he takes uncovers fragments of a past he was once part of — pieces of a story he was not aware of, now staring back at him through the wreckage. But understanding what happened here comes at a cost, and the deeper he digs, the more he realizes that the truth may be far more terrifying than he ever imagined. Yet, he cannot turn back—he has spent his entire life chasing it.

A World That Demands More Than Survival

The world of Hell is Us is not just a backdrop—it is a test. There are no clear answers, no simple threats, only the brutal demand to adapt or perish.
Remi’s only tools are a set of mysterious weapons—whose origin is as enigmatic as the forces he must face—a resourceful drone named KAPI, and a datapad. They’ll prove useful, but the answers he’s looking for… he’ll have to find on his own.

The Weight of Isolation

Remi won’t be handed the answers he seeks. If he wants to understand what happened here, he’ll have to search for clues—scattered across the land, buried in ruins, and hinted at in the words and actions of those he meets. Some may help him, but no one will offer up the truth for free. In these troubled times, everyone has their own burdens, and their willingness to assist may depend on what he can do for them.

You must read the world itself—follow the remnants left behind by those who came before, listen for the unnatural silence that signals danger, and decide whether to push forward or turn back. Every discovery is earned, and every mistake is yours alone.
Remi’s journey isn’t just about surviving what lies ahead—it’s about confronting what’s always been missing. The civil war may have reshaped Hadea, but for him, the real wound was inflicted long before the conflict began.

What if the truth he’s been seeking is worse than not knowing?

We’ve only scratched the surface of Remi’s journey. In the coming months, we will reveal more about his past, the dangers he will face, and the choices that will define him.
But in a world where the truth has been buried under centuries of silence, will understanding be enough?

Follow us on our Social Medias and prepare for what lies ahead. The answers are coming—but so is something else.

⚠️ Known technical Issue with some Intel CPUs

Hello everyone,

As we gear up for the Hell is Us demo (June 2–16), we want to inform you about a technical issue that may affect a small number of players using Intel 13th and 14th Gen CPUs.

🧠 In brief, what’s the Issue?

Some recent Intel CPUs (13th and 14th Gen) are experiencing random crashes in games built with Unreal Engine 5, like Hell is Us. The root cause is a hardware instability known as “Vmin Shift”, triggered by high voltage and heat due to overly aggressive motherboard settings.

Intel has identified the issue and is rolling out a BIOS microcode update (version 0x12B) to fix it. However, this update depends on motherboard manufacturers, so it may not yet be available for all systems.

👉 Official Intel resource: Intel Community – Vmin Shift Instability

🎮 Other Major Games Affected

This issue isn’t unique to Hell is Us. Several high-profile games have reported similar problems:
 • Remnant 2
 • Path of Titans
 • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
 • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
 • Dragonkin : The Banished
 • Lords of the Fallen
 • Black Myth : Wukong

Some studios have even added in-game warnings for players using these CPUs.

🛠️ What Can You Do?
 1. Update your BIOS to the latest version from your motherboard manufacturer.
 2. Enable “Intel Baseline” settings in the BIOS if available.
 3. If you're not comfortable with BIOS updates, we recommend contacting a local technician or your motherboard’s support team.
 4. Update the CPU microcode using Intel XTU : https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/17881/intel-extreme-tuning-utility-intel-xtu.html

A Closer Look at Ultra Settings and 4K Performance in Hell is Us

Hey everyone,

Following the recent reveal of the PC specifications for Hell is Us, we've seen a lot of passionate discussion—especially around the mention of 30 FPS in 4K with a RTX 4090 GPU when using Ultra settings.

Link to PC Specs news :
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1620730/view/515211349279638277?l=english

We’d like to take a moment to clarify what that actually means, and why there’s more to the story than that single number.
Understanding Our Graphics Presets
The performance estimates we provided are based on very conservative benchmarks. Our Ultra settings aim to push visual fidelity as far as possible—and we do mean ultra.
Here's how our built-in upscaling is configured across each preset:

Low: 50%
Medium: 40%
High: 30%
Very High: 20%
Ultra: 10%

By default, the game uses Unreal Engine’s Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) for upscaling, but we also support DLSS, XeSS, and FSR—all of which will be fully updated to their latest versions at launch in September.
So... 30 FPS on a 4090?
With Ultra settings, we prioritize visual fidelity over framerate. That said, the RTX 4090 will run Hell is Us at higher than 30 FPS in 4K Ultra—but it may not consistently reach 60 FPS. We’re simply being realistic in our communication to avoid overpromising. Our goal is to set clear expectations, not to limit what your system can achieve.
Remember, you’re always free to tune the settings to find the balance that’s right for you. Ultra is just the upper ceiling.
Try It for Yourself
Don’t let this hold you back from giving the demo a try during the upcoming Steam Next Fest. You’ll be able to test the game directly and get a feel for how it performs on your own system. Every PC is different, and real-world performance can often surprise you.
Thanks again for your feedback and support—we love seeing the community so engaged, and we’re excited for you to dive into the world of Hell is Us.

See you soon,
The Hell is Us Team

Hell is Us | How to adjust the Difficulty

Hi everyone,

Hell is Us is a challenging game — but it’s also one we want to be enjoyable for everyone.
That’s why we’ve designed three preset difficulty levels you can choose from right at the start of your adventure that you can change at any point:

Each setting adjusts key gameplay elements, such as enemy health and damage output.

If you want more control, we’ve got you covered. The game also includes custom sliders to fine-tune your experience. One of the most impactful is the Enemy Aggressiveness Mode slider, which determines how often enemies attack and how intense combat feels.

Lastly, there's the Death Penalty option just below, which lets you choose whether enemies and XP gained since your last save should be reset upon death.

Whether you're here for the story and exploration or searching for a serious combat challenge, Hell is Us adapts to your style. Even on the Lenient setting, danger lurks — and on Mercyless, only the most prepared will survive.

Additional TIP: mastering the game’s mechanics can tip the odds in your favor. Perfect your timing to regain health, and learn how to use your Items, drone and weapon abilities.

We can’t wait to see how you experience Hadea — and what difficulty you’ll choose.
