This year's inevitable flood of April Fools Day joke visual novels begins with Palworld

Palworld, everyone's favorite Nintendo lawsuit waiting to happen, got in on the April Fools Day action early by releasing a trailer for an imaginary visual novel called Pal♡world! ~More Than Just Pals~, which is set in a high school full of Pals and their trainers who want to go on dates with you. There are a few nods to anime clichés, with the Black Marketeer cast in the role of the "devious head of the student council" and Kattress going yandere, as well as references to videogames like Doki Doki Literature Club. It's all pretty par for the course...

Palworld, the game known for being Pokemon with guns, is doing the very original joke of pretending to make a dating sim for April Fool's Day

As if Palworld could be any less original, Pocketpair has released a trailer for a dating sim based on the Pokemon with guns game.

Palworld is, to be blunt, one of the most unoriginal games ever made. We all know this! There's nothing unique about it, right down to some of its Pal's designs. So, it shouldn't really be a surprise that ahead of April Fool's Day Pocketpair has released a trailer showing off a fake Palworld dating sim where you can literally date some of the game's Pals. At first glance it really looks like an actual game, with all of the character art and polished-looking AI, but it is just a joke, and an overdone one at that. Maybe if you're 14 and you've never seen a dating sim outside of Doki Doki Literature Club or Hatoful Boyfriend you'll find it funny, but I don't exactly hold teenagers as the pinnacle of taste makers.

What is real is that there's an update on the way, but it isn't clear if any jokes about an entire genre of games that don't actually revolve around just dating for you to be exasperated at will be in said update or not. There's actually no indication at all as to what this update might include, or when it will arrive other than "soon" so you'll just have to wait for that one.

Palworld is getting its first raid battle soon, featuring a giant goth girl that I'm sure people will be very normal about

Palworld's been coasting along nicely since its meteoric rise to internet stardom earlier this year—and while it's been getting steady updates since, they've primarily been bug fixes and nerfs to the nail economy, seldom in the way of content...

Palworld's made so much money it's 'too big for a studio with our size to handle', but CEO says it's not going to go public or sell up yet: 'I want to make multiple small games'

PocketPair CEO and Palworld creator Takuro Mizobe has given an interview to Bloomberg about the game's breakout success. During the interview Mizobe puts this down to, among other things, its unusual mix of influences and it being a game that's fun to watch as well as play with friends. But the scale of that success? It's both almost too much for Pocketpair to handle, and something that Mizobe is determined won't change the studio...

Palworld dev says 'a game without a multiplayer mode just doesn’t feel right in the era we live today'

2024 has so far seen two breakout hits and, while they're very different prospects, both share some elements in common. Arrowhead's Helldivers 2 is the current flavour of the moment, while just before that we saw the huge success of PocketPair's Palworld. It might not seem the two have much crossover, but both are built around an irreverent multiplayer take on popular genres, extraction shooters and survival games, and the sense of community both have managed to foster feels key to their appeal...
