It’s time for another exciting preview of what’s to come in 1.0 on June 27!
Hold onto your hats, because we’re about to unleash a map makeover of epic proportions! Our arena has undergone a total transformation, with brand new hexes that look and play completely differently than before.

FEELING FRESH
The gameplay arena itself is one of the key parts of any multiplayer FPS game. It can make a huge aesthetic difference to the game as well as dramatically change up gameplay.
Starting from scratch, we’ve strived to embrace a cleaner and more modern aesthetic across the Arena and tighten up the flow of the map. Regardless of your weapon choice, we want you to have the opportunity to blow the competition away. Even though the entire Arena has been reimagined, the uniquely recognisable elements of WORLD BOSS are still core to the experience!
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
With any new feature, there is always a huge collaborative effort between different development teams. For the new map, Design played a big role in the creation of the new environments, from the concepting stage to the final layout.
The Art team then worked closely with Design to consider how aspects such as pathways, interiors, unique memorable spaces and even areas where you can place the Corruption Bomb, (more on this soon), affected other gameplay elements.
From the old to the new, you’ll notice that while the number of hexes is lower, there is a lot more verticality in the map. The map itself is denser, with so many different vantage points players can utilise to delete their enemies, as well as so many more opportunities for close quarter combat. Ready those fists, because you may need them when someone sneaks up on you!
There’s lots more to consider now when moving throughout the map. Even though there are plenty more areas to battle it out for the crown, there are now even more safe spaces for Perk selection mid-game. With all the new pathways and obstacles added to the map, it helps to create more memorable patterns that players will begin to recognise. Even elements such as ramp and stair incline were meticulously thought about to ensure that players can successfully engage with all the different elements within the map.
It's not just a feast for the eyes, but a playground for new and fun gameplay like you've never experienced before!
THE VISION
Building the new hexes from the ground up started with the themes for each one and how they would fit together without overshadowing one another. The team decided on Metro, Arctic, Dunes as the map foundations as the three were a great contrast to each other.
From the initial vision, the hexes went through multiple iterations in design whilst keeping the theme in mind.
An important aspect that the team wanted to inject into the aesthetic of the map was the notion of the gameshow elements of WORLD BOSS. With an element of gameshow pizzazz and a hint of futuristic simulation, the team created a map that embraced both elements and married them together perfectly.
Despite dramatically changing the art in the game, the original essence and identifiable features of WORLD BOSS were kept in mind. Hugh, Lead Artist on WORLD BOSS, recognised that the character and gun skins were a great indication of what was possible and where they could push the environment art to. The vibrant and futuristic style of the skins were injected into the new map and helped to keep the quintessential elements of the game that players know and love.
There are so many fun new features in the map, such as holograms and chair lifts but also the interesting building interiors which can give players so many more places to explore and also hide so they don’t get eliminated.
Get ready to jump into a whole new world, the new and improved map is sure to set the arena alight!
WORLD BOSS 1.0 is coming on 27 June 2023.
