Devlog №2: I Found a Kettle, Time to Build a Power Grid Out of It!

Hey there again, everyone!

We have a big year ahead of us: with our eyes set firmly on releasing the game this year in Early Access, the team continues to work hard on I Am Future. This work has already borne fruit: we released a demo earlier this week to let players get their hands on the game early and gather feedback. One of the mechanics this demo is built around is disassembly. In today's devlog entry, we would like to tell you more about it.

Luckily, since you’re supposedly the only human on the entire planet, you will experience no shortage of resources. In I Am Future, everything around you is up for grabs, including all kinds of household appliances from the long-gone civilization.

First, let’s talk about how we came up with adding the disassembly mechanic to I Am Future. In a survival game, the player constantly needs various resources for crafting and building. Our team wants to breathe life into the process of resource gathering and ensure that each disassembly feels like a small adventure rather than a tedious chore. Our goal is to make each mini-puzzle challenging yet intuitive enough, so players will have the chance to learn a little bit more about electronics along the way.

So how does disassembly actually work? Each appliance has parts that are attached to the frame. You rotate it, locating detachable parts and removing them in a specific order. You can’t remove the lid without unscrewing it, can you? It’s important to point out that, by disassembling an appliance, you might get both basic and unique materials that otherwise would be hard to come across.

Sometimes you will be in for a surprise too. Who knows what an ancient microwave may contain—a hidden stash or even a tiny civilization that has developed in a dried-up drop of soup?

We are currently working on quite an extensive list of disassemblable appliances. Among them: a TV set, a flashlight, a fan, a vacuum cleaner, a game controller and Christmas lights. The game is a story-driven experience, so some items will have stories to tell of what had happened to them before they ended up in the player’s hands.

Devlog №1: Flooded Cities, Megacorps and... Talking Fridges?

Greetings from Mandragora, the team behind I Am Future!

As I Am Future is steadily shaping up, we decided to start telling you a little more about the development process and ideas/features that we implement. In our series of devlogs, we will dive deep into how our upcoming survival life sim is being created. The topic of our first devlog entry is the lore of the game. Let's jump right in.

The events of I Am Future take place on the post-apocalyptic Earth, where human civilization is shattered and almost extinct.

The series of incidents that led to the collapse of society began when the comet that flew out from the Kuiper Belt was accidentally caught by the Earth's gravity and became another satellite of our planet. The series of earthquakes, tsunamis, and climate change that followed led to the rise of the global sea level, flooding numerous cities and territories occupied by billions of people.

The remains of humankind then united under the rule of The United Federation of Earth: a police state with a technocratic government settled in Cosmopolis, a magnificent capital one step short of becoming a utopia. However, society soon became infested with ragtag cults and radical groups that saw the second satellite as an omen of extinction, while others tried using it to their advantage. The conditions on Earth became harsher and harsher, with the constant increase in the cost of living for most of the population. Desperation spread.

It is a time of the corporate struggle between three rising conglomerates, all striving to break through the human body's limitations in their search for immortality. The ideas of Transhumanism became the epitome of thoughts and aspirations of all—from commoners struggling to survive another day to overindulged billionaires worrying about their deteriorating bodies.

Theseustech Corporation offers to substitute the human brain with an artificial brain implant which would then be transplanted into an android body granting immortality to the owner, given that the necessary maintenance will take place. This is a long, painful, and costly procedure that only some of the wealthiest members of society can afford.

Neolife tackles the problem of immortality differently—they set out to create a digital haven where the people’s consciousness will be living a happy and fulfilling life free of earthly struggles and the need to take care of their corporeal bodies in the first place. The option to digitize the consciousness becomes an extremely popular choice for most people, including the poorest members of society. Undergoing this procedure to become a sentient service android or even a home appliance promises massive monetary compensation to their families. You can bump into a talking fridge across abandoned residences here and there, and now you know it’s not just a program, but someone’s identity caught within the appliance.

Devus Ink pursues the colonization of other planets to attain more valuable resources there. However, the expeditions don’t go quite as planned and become more and more costly.

Eventually, after a brutal confrontation accompanied by hostile mergers and failed mega-projects, the winner is forged. This is UNICORP: a massive conglomerate that becomes the largest and the most influential company of its time, pulling the strings of every meaningful resource and politician in the government behind the scenes.

This is where your story begins. You find yourself in a ruined city, your memory has been modified, and anything you do remember gives you no clear picture of the events that preceded the catastrophic destruction surrounding you. There are no signs of city inhabitants and no presence of UNICORP activities. Where is everyone? What has happened here? The city lies in shattered ruins; it is up to you to reveal the chain of cataclysmic events behind this and learn our hero's true identity.
Now let’s take one step back and observe this new home you have carefully.
Waking up from hibernation as a guy named Christopher, you find yourself alone on the top of a skyscraper in this seemingly abandoned world called Cosmopolis.

By some quick observation, you can tell that many years have passed since civilization collapsed. A city, once modern and alive, is now flooded and overgrown. Only the roofpoints stand above the water like small islands, and the billboards are overgrown with grass and trees. Nature took its toll: wild animals and birds are the new citizens. But when the night falls, the unseen fantastic creatures come, and bring the threat.

The world may be in ruins, but there’s potential for beauty deep in the overgrowth. The old world may be gone, but there’s life and joy to be found in this new one.

What triggered the collapse of civilization and brought you to the roof? Share your theory with us and we will disclose more detail in future updates!
