Dev Diary #34 - Ways of War - Oathsworn
Watch the Ways of War First Look Dev stream VOD
Hello everyone, my name is Luis Ferreira and I’m a senior designer at Triumph Studios. It is with great joy that I get to talk to you about the first content pack of our new expansion pass, Ways of War!
Today I will be showing you a new culture included in this pack, the Oathsworn.

The Oathsworn are an Order affinity culture that then gain another affinity point based on an Oath they take.

Their main mechanic is the Devotion system, which tracks their actions and measures them against their Oath. The higher their Devotion to the Oath, the stronger their units become and the happier their cities are.

Each Oath has a preferred playstyle. They have preferred actions that when taken increase the Devotion level and prohibited actions that lower the Devotion to the Oath when acted.
The Oath of Strife, for example, gains Devotion by making wars and proving themselves in combat, but losing Devotion if they make peace or enter diplomatic treaties.

At the start of the game, the Oathsworn are Neutral to their oath, yet to prove themselves. But as they follow it they can become Adherent, then Devotees and at the pinnacle they become Paragons of the oath.

There’s also an Oathbreaker state which means your Devotion is low enough to break your oath, incurring heavy stability penalties on your cities and the Oath’s boon on your units actually becomes a detriment. Following and acting on what the oath requires from you can bring the Oathsworn back from this disgraced state.

The Oath of Harmony is all about seeking cooperation and ridding the world of discord. They gain Devotion to their Oath by having cities or vassals of other races, clearing infestation and ancient wonders and making truces and forgiving grievances. They dislike starting wars, destroying or migrating hostile cities and fabricating grievances.

Their Oath boon is Harmonize, their connection to their oath and their secondary Nature affinity allows them to heal in combat when they go below a Hit Point threshold.

Righteousness is a straightforward oath that cares about doing what’s right and good. They gain devotion equal to their alignment value. They despise evil actions and receive double the evil alignment if they ever commit such an act which in turn rapidly brings their Devotion level down.

Nobility is their unit mechanic. They gain an amount of Spirit damage scaling with their devotion on their non-flanking attacks.

Strife is all about war and forging themselves in the heat of battle. Their Oath encourages war, winning in combat, especially if you are the underdog, and razing enemy cities. They dislike making truces or any kind of diplomatic alliance and even reject vassals.

Their Warrior’s Soul triggers when the enemy is overwhelming them, giving the Strife Oathsworn an edge in combat when they need a push.

Now that we know what their oaths are, let’s talk about the units that will help you fulfill them.

The oathsworn start with two melee units, the first being the Sworn Guard, a polearm unit that will defend your backline units while applying Sundered Defense with its attacks.

The other starting unit is the Honor Blade, a fighter which has extra defensive stats but it has a more costly drafting cost for its tier. Its Defensive Strike, a single action ability, deals decent damage while placing this unit in Defense Mode, making this unit a great frontline striker who can take a beating and give it back!

The Vowkeeper is a strong and versatile support unit. Vow of Purification removes all Negative Status Effects from a friendly unit and grants them Status Protection to ward and protect them against further detrimental effects. Vow of Healing is an area of effect heal and its Purging Blast base attack removes a positive status effect from enemies it hits.

The Sealbearer is a Tier 2 Battle Mage unit that carries powerful seals, marks of their oath, with them. Their Seal Bolts base ability has different damage types according to their Oath and their Seal ability changes in effect according to it. All Seals last 3 turns.

Resonance Seal (Harmony): Deals 30 Blight damage and all attacks against the unit deal an extra 4 Blight damage.

Transference Seal (Righteousness): Deals 30 Spirit damage and all attacks against this unit heal the attacker for 5 hit points.

Fire Seal (Strife): Deals 35 Fire Damage and applies a strong burn effect, dealing 12 Fire damage to the enemy each passing turn.

All Tier 3 units are different depending on the Oath! Harmony’s is a strong Ranged mounted unit called the Peacebringer. Its special attack is a Line Shot that strikes units in a 3-hex line and it even has a Quick Stab ability like ranged heroes do to deal with enemy melee engagement.

Something all Tier 3 Oathsworn units share is their Oath Paragon abilities where they gain an extra ability when you are at Paragon level Devotion. The Peacebringer’s ability is the Arrow of Harmony, which deals damage and applies Pacified, disabling an enemy’s ability to use damaging abilities for a turn.

The Righteousness Tier 3 unit. A Shock unit that after charging into melee engagement, its strategy is using its full action attack Helmsplitter to obliterate enemies. It deals massive damage and ignores half of the target’s defenses.

At Paragon Devotion, it gains Radiant Slash, a single action ability with an area of effect that deals Spirit damage and Blinds units hit.

Last but not least, the Oath of Strife’s Tier 3: the Warbound. Like the Avenger it is also a Shock unit but this one prefers rushing through the battlefield with its Bulldoze ability, which makes the unit rush in a line, damaging all enemies in its way and then still enabling the unit to attack afterwards.
Flaming Charge Strike works differently from other charge attacks, where instead of gaining a percentage of its damage as the unit moves, it gains a flat Fire damage increase, +5 per hex moved up to +15 damage.

The unit gains the Infernal Blaze ability at Paragon Devotion, a single action that deals Fire damage to all adjacent units and grants the unit Infernal Might stacks, giving it even more Fire damage on its Charge Attack.

This concludes our dive into the Oathsworn, a culture who strongly follow their own values and ideals no matter what. Hope you are as excited as I am for the release of this content pack and hope to see you next week when I go over the new Tomes and Wildlife.

The Ways of War content pack releases on the 5th of November so hope to see you and your creations then!
Ways of War Features:
• The Oathsworn Culture, based on unique warrior codes that provide rewards to those strong enough to adhere to their ethos. Swear the Oath of Righteousness to focus on annihilating evil, the Oath of Strife to wage war only against the strong and worthy, or the Oath of Harmony to try and avoid war whenever possible.
  • Intrigue Events that threaten your empire, focused on dishonorable crises like betrayals and assassinations.
  • Two new forms, allowing players to lead empires of strong Simians and lumbering Ogrekin.
  • Four New Tomes, granting rulers the arts of Discipline, Shades, Calamity, and Prosperity, each adding new units alongside spells of inner strength, outward destruction, and more.
  • So Much More, from new mounts to new music, new ancient creature lines, new realm templates and an interface skin and beyond!

As usual, streams and dev journals will take place weekly up until the release, so join us for the Ways of War First Look Stream this Thursday (Oct 3rd) on our YouTube channel!
Coming in 2025, two additional expansions will be released as part of Expansion Pass 2:
• Giant Kings: Restore the Elder Giants to their rightful place as masters of the Astral Sea! Delve deep beneath the surface for ancient treasure, wield long-forgotten crystal magic, and discover the powers of a fallen empire. This expansion includes a new Giant ruler type, adds new dwellings and hand-crafted map regions to the game, and will launch in Q2 2025.
  • Archon Prophecy: The forces of light are yours to command in a grand war against the corruption of Urrath. Consult the oracles to shape both your own fate and the fate of the realms through hidden prophecies. Includes a new culture, new prophecy events, and new story content, launching in Q3 2025.
HERALD OF GLORY
Premade Ruler: Cantariel of Gilrad
It is said the New Age is announced through thundering hooves and beating wings. As the sun rises, the Herald of Glory descends with her Envoys, singing of salvation and the arrival of the Archons.

Armor Set: Herald of Glory
Become an emissary of the Astral Sea with the Herald of Glory Armor Set. With the Nebulous Winged Helmet, the Herald Surcoat and Adorned Epaulet you too can spread the divine word in style. This Armor Set unlocks a new customisation you can wear as a whole or mix and match with other items.

Faction Content: Pegasus Mounts, Swift Marchers & Lance of Glory
The Godir of Magehaven have discovered a new pass time, Jousting. After countless matches even Wizard Kings can equip the Lance of Glory Hero Loadout. Descend from the skies and have your armies ride into battle on the Regal Pegasus using the Pegasus Exotic Mount Trait. Explore the realms in no time flat with the Swift Marchers Society Trait, granting you the ability to use Forced March right from the start.
PIGLET UPDATE
Accompanying the release of the Herald of Glory is a tiny update to help prepare for the new Expansion Pass. We had trouble coming up with a name, until we found an appropriately small and lesser-known constellation at the edge of the Astral Sea: the Piglet. And so it became the Piglet Update.

  • Updated Premium Content Ownership Identification
    • Content Banner is now conditional, only showing Content that is not yet owned.
    • Owned Premium Content Icons are now shown on the Main Menu
  • Forced March Fixes
    • Fixed an issue where the Army Panel did not update after using Forced March
    • Fixed an issue where the Health Lost did not accurately reflect modifiers
    • Fixed a double % in the Forced March Tooltip

We’ll see you later this week with more information about the upcoming content!

New Age of Wonders 4 DLC suddenly drops, with much more on the way

One of the more wonderful things about the world of gaming is watching titles change and grow as they evolve. Many start out small, and through updates, DLC, or expansions become something entirely different. Age of Wonders 4 is a game on that journey and while already one of the best strategy titles of 2023, is getting even better with four pieces of new DLC on the horizon thanks to a new expansion pass. The first of which, Herald of Glory, is out now.

Age of Wonders 4 - Mystic 1.3 Update

Enthralled Godir

We hope that you’ve been enjoying the summer season. For these past few weeks we’ve continued to work on the Mystic Update, undeterred by the insanity brought on through Summer Heat, Storms and Railroad Maintenance. The Mystic 1.3 Update aims to polish the changes we introduced with the Mystic Update.

We’ve focused our efforts on tweaking the Rank Updates and the Eldritch Sovereign but have also taken along some other requests. The Tome of Corruption has gotten some attention, as have certain Units. Beyond that we’ve improved the way Faction selection & Pantheon settings are handled and you’ll find more fixes for Crashes, AI and Multiplayer as well as improvements for the Modders among us.

As the Summer enters its second half our attention will fully shift towards the future, preparing new Updates & Content. We are dedicated to Age of Wonders 4 and will have more to share after the Summer.

May your Pantheon Thrive

    • Increased Frost Damage from 12 to 30
    • Increased Lightning Damage from 18 To 30
  • Hero Skill “Eldritch Influence I” - Reduced the amount of World Map & Combat Casting points from 15 to 10

Rituals
  • Astral Wisp Ritual - Reduced Casting Cost from 2 Thralls/80 CP to 1 Thrall/45 CP

  • The various abilities that allow casting extra spells per turn in Combat now no longer stack with each other, limiting the player to 2 spells per turn.
  • Units with the hidden ‘Doomed’ Property that are intended to die at the end of Combat can no longer be revived by ‘Resurgence’
  • Link effects like “Enchain Mind" and “Limited Seal" now have a priority equal to the unit using it. Since a unit can only have one link active at a time, a higher prio means that higher tier units can remove link effects from lower tier units but not the other way around. So the Progenitor Golem (Tier 5) using its Limited Seal on a unit means that the Umbral Mistress (Tier 4) cannot use its Enchain Mind on that unit.

We have reworked the way factions are chosen during Game Setup. Ruler Settings are now additive allowing for more control over which factions appear in your games. If insufficient Rulers are available for the chosen setting Library Rulers will be used as a Fallback.

  • Removed Eldritch Relics from being included in the pools for generated Rewards.

  • When opening the Resource Browser it will now show which Mod is currently being worked on, and allows you to search only through modded resources. Leaving the search blank will show a list of all resources that have been modded (either from the game itself, or added by the mod)
  • Improved compatibility for mods when we move resources between packs. In the past it would only apply the mod if the resource was still in the exact same location, now it will locate it and apply the changes there.
  • The Resource Editor is now better at detecting the active mod if the folder name is different from the .acp filename.
  • LevelEd will now load in mod resources when opened through the PackageManager

Multiplayer
  • Fixed an Out of Sync that could occur when releasing a city as a vassal
  • Fixed an Out of Sync that could occur from independent units not evolving

  • Fixed an issue where Combat Takeover would always trigger if you were in a team with an AI player and that AI is involved in the combat.
  • Fixed an issue where Combat Takeover was not available during Retry in Hot Seat games
  • Various fixes related to showing which stacks are enabled in the take over window.
  • Potential fixes for crashes that could occur when accepting/rejecting a Combat Takeover Request
  • Fixed that Combat Takeover was not available during Retry in Hot Seat
  • Fixed the leader portrait showing the wrong leader when using Takeover in Hot Seat.

  • The Pantheon Enabled settings in advanced setup have now been split up into three different settings:
    • Enable Ascension Traits
    • Enable Ascended Transformations and Skills
    • Enable recruiting Pantheon Rulers as Heroes (disabled in multiplayer)
    • Regardless of these settings, you can now always ascend your ruler at the end of the game.

      • Reduced Defense from 6 to 5
      • Melee Strike - Reduced damage 6 Physical/6 Lightning to 6 Physical/4 Lightning.

Materium
  • Tome of Rock:
    • Unit Enchantment “Obsidian Weapons” - Now grants an additional +1 Physical damage (+2 for non-repeating attacks)

Shadow
  • Tome of Corruption:
    • City Structure “Throne of Insidious Whispers”
      • Reduced Insanity duration from 3 turns to 1 turn
      • Now correctly mentions it can only be built in the throne city.
    • Unit “Umbral Mistress”
      • Fury - Reduced the duration of Insanity from 3 Turns to 1 Turn.

  • Updated a number of texts to make the type of Free City a text insert instead of always linking to the Free City game concept so we can dynamically fill it in (and support "Umbral Dwelling") for texts in PvE war coordination and trade.
  • The Fallen Bastion event in the Castle Ruins ancient wonder in the Umbral Abyss has an option to pay mana without explaining that it would remove the Rampant Umbral Taint combat enchantment, this has now been added to the button’s tooltip.
  • Umbral Dwellings now more frequently ask to declare war on other Rulers during demand events. Before this was a very low chance of happening if there were Free Cities available, now it’s about 50/50 if both a valid Free City and Ruler can be found.
  • The Umbral Thralls race now has 1 less Society Trait randomized each playthrough, as their innate “Umbral Thrall” Society Trait takes 1 of their spots. Before this change they had 3 society traits which normally isn’t allowed.

Eldritch Pact Spells
  • World Map Spell “Pall of Gloom” - Can no longer terraform Uninhabitable Provinces into Gloom Terrain.
  • World Map Spell “Umbral Rift” - Now targets a sector in the Umbral Abyss rather than a single hex.
  • Combat Spell “Umbral Exile” - Any Independent Units exiled to the Umbral Abyss will now die instead of being moved to the Umbral Abyss.

  • Bone Dragons & Reapers are now always considered Magic Origin
  • Unit Passive “Curse Eater” - Now disables the unit has the Burning status effect
  • Unit “Abductor” - No longer able to Abduct invulnerable Units
  • Unit “Phoenix”
    • Increased HP from 110 to 120
    • Increased Defense from 4 to 5
    • Charge Strike - Now has a 90% chance to inflict Burning
    • Overheat
      • Increased damage from 20 to 22.
      • Changed from a 90% chance to inflict Burning to Guaranteed.

  • Alignment waning has been changed so it will only wane upwards towards your starting alignment when below that amount, instead of always waning upwards towards 10 alignment.
  • Duration pins for all outpost operations are now enabled and visible for everyone, so anyone can notice that an upgrade is being built and how long it will take to complete without having to select the outpost.
  • Free Cities can no longer take over nodes that are on a different layer than they own a province on.
  • Echo Casting, the Mystic Attunement World Map Ability, can no longer be used multiple times on the same Spell.

AI
  • Fixed an issue where the AI would stall during their turn
  • Fixed an issue where AI would not initiate an Attack after completing a Siege.
  • Fixed a slow down in AI processing
  • Fixed a crash that could occur while refreshing Unit Properties

"New DLC when?" we hear you cry. We asked Twitter, but all it replied was "Grok grok grok"
