Introduction to the Island of Winds: Our creatures

Skoffín
The skoffín is a cross-breed between a cat and a fox; mothered by the former, fathered by the latter, and usually born in domesticity. This rare creature takes more after the feline side of the family and can easily be mistook for a hairless cat. There are cases in which farmers have managed to domesticate a skoffín, by treating them with affection and educating others on proper conduct around these strange beasts. It is said that many a finger has been lost to those too eager to pet whatever comes purring their way, but skoffín are never truly dangerous unless they feel threatened and they are known to emit a foul breath to deter enemies. For this reason alone, it is much more common for any skoffín born around a farm to be immediately put down or violently driven away. In the wild, they will go into hiding and tend to seek out one another for company. They stay clear of any creature walking on two legs and although they have been known to feed on a sheep or two, the Balance Keepers do not consider the skoffín population to be a significant problem.

Skuggabaldur
Conversely to the skoffin, a skuggabaldur is a fiend mothered by a fox and fathered by a cat. They similarly take after their mother's side of the family and thus resemble a shadowy fox. They are, however, much more dangerous and aggressive than the shy, sly fox and cannot be killed with conventional weapons. Skuggabaldur have been known to viciously attack and tear apart flocks of sheep, but like their distant cousins, the skoffin, they are rare creatures indeed. Should fate deem you unlucky enough to chance upon such a specimen in the wild, take heed - your surroundings have most likely been thrown into unbalance.
