Devlog 1: Art and Composition in Rose and Locket

Hello, Underwest dwellers!

Aside from the run’n’gun action you should expect in the game, one of the things that makes Rose & Locket stand out is its comic book style. However, we didn’t just take your typical 2D plane and divide it into strips. In fact, the whole game is designed around the concept, which affects both its gameplay and dramatic presentation in many ways.
Here is a small showcase.

As you can see, the gameplay area isn’t simply a blocky comic grid. In fact, the screen can take any shape, making for some beautiful scenery.

One of our favorite tricks is utilizing the panel’s “negative space” for artistic purposes, such as making the scene more striking or adding a foreboding foreground.

Reducing the space around the main character naturally draws the player’s attention to an object in the middle of the frame, making the scene more dramatic. No camera panning needed!

Of course, this also lets the game have some natural and visceral story progression without adding superfluous text boxes.

This trick is not just for show, as changing a panel naturally changes the shape of your battle arena, making each encounter feel special.

Such a technique lets one shape the game as the situation demands, sometimes even dropping the whole comic thing for the sake of a good cinematic shot.

We hope you liked this sneak peek and are excited about the surprises the game has in store.
There is much more to come, so stay tuned about future updates!
See you soon, in the Underwest!
