Development Update - January 12 2024

Happy 2024!

Hello wastelanders!

We hope you had a merry happy solstice time. The Outerminds team took a short break, but we are now back to work on Turbo Kid.
This Is Fine
This is it, the last stretch before launch! We should have content freeze in a few weeks, at which point we’ll finish up stabilization, optimization, balancing, and debugging.

Many devs who are in that situation will tell you they have everything under control and aren’t facing any severe problems with their game. But they’re all lying, they’re freaking out! They’re trying to reassure themselves, and you, but deep down they know that the whole thing could blow up in their faces at any moment.

But we’re different. We are 100% NOT LYING when we say that we have everything under control and we aren’t facing any severe problems with Turbo Kid. No one here is freaking out, OK?! This of course explains why we have so little news for you this week.
And, That's It
Told you it was a quick one.

We leave you with this image which actually sums up what we think 2024 will be like: bright, beautiful, and turbo!

We'll be right here in two weeks with more stuff. In the meantime, stay updated on our socials.

Gear up for a Turbo-charged 2024!

Hello folks! Gear up for a Turbo-charged 2024! 🚴‍♂️

There are more exciting Turbo Kid news on the horizon and we can't wait to share the adventure with you!

Wishing you an absolutely RAD journey into the new year! 🌟

Development Update December 29

One Last Time Before the New Year

With the solstice behind us and as the year draws to a close, we thought we’d give you the 411 on some of the questions we’ve seen popping up about the development of the game. You guys have been super patient, and it is extremely appreciated so, it only makes sense that we would be as transparent as possible.

But don’t worry, the news is good.

So, put on your helmet and let’s jump straight into it!
So, Just How Far Along Are We?
We’ve seen some of you guys speculate on how far along we are and when the game will be released. So, here’s the good news:

The game design, narrative design, and level design are final and the game is feature-complete. We’ve also created and integrated most of the art into the game and, as we stand, animations, VFX and overall polish are 95% done. A lot of the SFX and music have been integrated. We’ve also been working tirelessly on optimization while Triple Boris works on the Switch port.

So, “what’s left to do?” you ask.

Here’s the breakdown of what we still have on our plate:

 • Integrating some side quests and cut-scenes
 • Polishing the art
 • Finalize audio integration
 • Language localization
 • Some balancing
 • Optimization
 • Finalize Nintendo Switch port
 • Debugging

In other words, we’re very much in the last strech of development.

As far as an actual release date, we’ll be sure to announce it as soon as we can, but don’t despair, it’s coming.
Got It! Now, Show Me Some of that Art!
Alright, calm down!

More good news on that front! The art has evolved significantly in the past weeks, and we're quite proud of it. Here’s a small compilation of some of our favorite shots of the game.

First, we’ve been working on creating a sense of heat and desolation in the Wasteland using some lighting. To give you an example, the title screen looks like this now:

The world of Turbo Kid is vast and diverse. While exploring it, you'll come across a wide array of vistas, from mesmerizing outdoor landscapes to oppressive underground areas.

You’ll also encounter the many strange characters and communities that inhabit these parts. Take this guy, for instance. You’ll find him burrowing somewhere in the depths of the wasteland. He might have a few missions for you.

“I smell a human-thing, yes-yes. I am shivers, I am best-greatest!”

And, that's a wrap for this year! The Outerminds team wishes you a fantastic New Year, which will undoubtedly be THE YEAR of Turbo Kid!

Cheers!

Development Update - December 15

A Quick One!

Hey, wastelanders! Here's another quick update for you guys. In this one, updates on the junkyard, a familiar NPC, a platforming showcase, and more.
One Person’s Trash Is Another Person’s Torture… Treasure
Atop a former residential neighborhood sits The Junkyard: an unsafely jagged and rusted collection of discarded and forgotten … well … junk. Find your way through this ungodly clutter of trash using makeshift scaffolds and secret passages. If you plan on visiting, you should talk to your friendly neighborhood scavenger Naomi, she’ll probably have some tips for you.
Old Gregor’s Got the Goods
An old tinkerer with a heart of gold, Old Gregor has been trying to find traces of survivors, or even civilization beyond the Eligius Wall. Unfortunately, the antenna he built in the cliffs to send and receive signals is broken. His old age having caught up to his determination, he needs help fixing the device.
Wait, Did You Guys Change the Soundtrack? —Blooper
Our lead QA has what most would call “a cat obsession”, or, as she’d probably say, “of course, I’m obsessed with cats, have you seen them?” Makes sense that this is what she listens to while working and involuntarily recording her music.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

For any of you who still have doubts about the cat obsession, here's a picture of her desk.

Have a wonderful period of the solstice, see you on the other side with another update in two weeks.
