Developer Update 2023 Vol.7 - A Look Back at Patch 0.31

Hello Hunters,

As we traverse the fascinating world of ZERO Sievert, we feel it's important to reflect on our recent journey, particularly the roll-out of patch 0.31.

Patch 0.31 was a significant milestone for us, bringing in ambitious changes to our codebase, data storage methods, new questlines, and an overhauled faction relation system. However, like any big adventure, there were unexpected challenges along the way.

The transition to patch 0.31 wasn't as smooth as we had hoped, and for that, we sincerely apologise. The patch, unfortunately, introduced more bugs than we anticipated, causing disruptions and some moments of frustration for you, our dedicated Hunters. To stabilise the game and address the most critical issues, we rolled out four hotfixes / patches in quick succession. While these fixes were largely successful, we acknowledge that with each hotfix, a couple of new bugs slipped through the cracks. We take full responsibility for these hiccups and are immensely grateful for your patience and understanding during this time.

The lessons we've learned from this experience are invaluable. The core challenges stemmed from how we approached the testing process for new patches on older save files — it wasn't as comprehensive as it needed to be. Moving forward, we're taking tangible steps to bolster our testing procedures. Not only are we implementing additional safeguards to reduce the chances of such issues recurring, like we did for the latest patch, but we are also initiating small-scale player testing sessions. where a small group of players may have access to new content for testing purposes. For those interested in being a part of this initiative, please DM me (@ericd) on Discord. Moreover, if there are significant design changes in a patch, like with patch 0.31, we will be utilising more open beta testings. This collaborative approach ensures that we can jointly craft a game experience that resonates with all of you.

Your unwavering support, patience, and especially constructive feedback have fuelled our resolve to face and overcome each challenge head-on. As we learn and grow from these experiences, it's your belief in us and commitment to ZERO Sievert that keeps our mission strong. It's you, our extraordinary community, who propels us forward despite setbacks.

Thank you for being a part of this adventure - we can't wait to share with you what we've been working on next.

Happy Hunting!

P.S,
We've secured a nomination for the "Best Game" at the prestigious 2023 GameMaker Awards! 🏆

This recognition is a testament to the dedication and passion of our wonderful community. As we bask in this moment, we humbly ask for your support to clinch the title. Lend your voice and cast your vote for Green Army ZERO Sievert!
New feature for future bug Investigation
To aid us in further improving the game and fixing bugs in the future, we've added a new feature: launch options. When we are having difficulties reproducing a bug you have reported, we may reach out and ask you to provide us a log file generated this way, we thank you in advance, hunters.

-log_to_file: This option will write a lot of debug log information to a text file on disk. This text file is found in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ZERO_Sievert\ (e.g C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\ZERO_Sievert) and is named with a timestamp, like 2023-7-20_10-58-31.log. We can use information in this file to help us diagnose many problems.

-strict_cloud: This option will add extra behaviour checks. If anything goes wrong whilst initialising Steam or when writing to Steam Cloud then you will get a pop-up message.
How to add launch options
1. Right-click on ZERO Sievert in your Steam library
 2. Choose properties
 3. Under the general tab, input -log_to_file or -strict_cloud into the text box of "Launch Options"

Looking forward, we're working diligently on another hotfix that will deliver more fixes next week. If you're still experiencing issues, please continue to let us know. Your input is crucial for improving ZERO Sievert.

Again, a big thank you to all of you for your patience, feedback, and bug reports. We're committed to making ZERO Sievert the best game it can be!
