Dev update - First Round of Testing Complete

Hello future residents,

Welcome to February! In case you missed last month’s update, we are excitedly preparing for launch this year! Soon you will be able to cozy up and manage your own little space community.

Recently we ran some playtests with close friends and family to test out the design and tackle any early bugs that may appear. Check out what our playtesters have been up to in this gameplay impressions video. Keep in mind that this is early testing footage and does not reflect the final version of the game. Things done in the video such as placing buildings outside the fog is not part of the final experience:

We hope to open up testing to at least SOME members of the public “soon”, perhaps as spring approaches and the snow thaws. Make sure you join us over at the Kitfox Discord to chat with other residents and the devs and find out when the next phase of testing begins, or compare ideas for sustainable architecture and interplanetary diet management… just beware scammers! We’ve had a few false friends on Discord claiming to represent Any% or Kitfox, so just keep in mind we will never ask you to install an exe, and if the beta invitation is not coming from someone with rights on the Kitfox Discord server, they’re probably not to be trusted.

One of the quiet truths of Mossfield Origins is that “recreation is research”, that by taking care of yourself and balancing your life and work, you’ll contribute more meaningfully to both in a holistic way. In the game, your residents need time for themselves, recharging them to get back to whatever building tasks you might need during their worktime. Maybe we can see beta testing as a great example? More research for us and more recreation for you, but also a bit of both on either side.

To my family back home:
I wish you could see the sky here with me. In the day we imagine new ways of living, without damaging the ground beneath us, a new future. And at night, the stars form new patterns and clusters, and we can imagine new stories and legends, a new past and present. My favorite right now is a group of 5 stars to the northwest these days, in a rough V. I think of them as The Flock, an ever-migrating collective through space and time, unified in destination and purpose.
I hope you’re well and can join me soon.

Also, the Kitfox team will be at PAX East! Let us know if you’re in Boston, as we’ll be hosting a panel and event around Dwarf Fortress… and maybe we’ll have more Mossfield Origins news?

Until next time,
Alexandra, Tanya, and Ruby

Dev update - Launch year!

Launch year

That's right Residents, our mission launches this year! The exact date isn't known but when LiFE corporation informs us, we'll let you know.

mission parameters initialized... incoming transmission - in world destination located
Play Testing & Events
Since mission preparation is ongoing, we've been inviting potential Residents to run through the protocols and it's been going quite well. We've redone the first hour of the mission at least three times, so you know it's working.

If you're a potential Resident interested in testing protocols for the mission, make sure to keep a signal locked with the Resident Community Space (e.g the Kitfox Games Discord) if any future opportunities arise.
Reality Entanglement Breach
We were fortunate to have Mossfield Origins be selected as part of the Games In Action - Interactivity / Activation \ Activism event at UBC in Vancouver, Canada. This was the first time the mission was observed in the field with unknown Residents testing experience parameters!

It was valuable to watch Residents who aren't familiar with city-building experiences engage successfully, which is one of our goals. There were also those that did have previous encounters with the genre who reported enjoying it too. Almost all players hit the end of the test (between 45-60 minutes Standard Earth Time) which data confirms was a great success.

After the event, there were many parameters adjusted to better suit future Residents as a result.
Mission Development Progress
We've solidified the specifications of the expected Resident experience and are now working on the last half of the journey.
Localization
Part of doing so is making sure we support a range of Residents by localizing the mission experience (please note, localization data shown below was obtained for test purposes and is not final).

This is more of a debug testing harness, but there's a more directed path for configuring your Resident experience.
Gamepad support
Part of our efforts to support a wider range of hardware for Resident experience is making sure gamepad input is fully supported. It progresses well - the capture below shows engaging with gamepad only.

We've also been working on making it easy to choose a different button set. If you look closely and squint past the GIF quality... cough

Resident Enrichment Facilitation

More details on other mission parameters from LiFE corporation can be expected in future, but while you wait, enjoy a preview of new homes, new buildings and more:

And talk with the devs in the Kitfox Discord where you can get a special Mossfield Resident title. Pretty snazzy if I do say so myself.

Here's a 'cozy' city builder about self-sustenance from the publisher of Boyfriend Dungeon

Mossfield Origins is a little city builder on the way that intends to deliver bites of the genre to those who might not have time to sit down for 100-hour save files. Mossfield Origins will focus on building self-sustaining communities and exploring a narrative around your city. It seems like an interesting one, as characters in the trailer imply that while they arrived where they are for one reason... they're "not doing that anymore."..

All is not what it seems when it comes to Life Corporation. Are they a force of good or evil? Some of the characters you'll meet along the way will struggle with these questions too.
A Story of Friendship
Along with managing your community and building sustainably, you will also hear the stories of two friends facing a cruel and destructive system. Destroy what the corporation has left behind and move towards a brighter future.
