Party Games vs Playing on Twitch

Welcome to the inaugural post in a series of King of the Castle dev logs, within which I - your humble servant Harry Tuffs, the Narrative Lead for Tributary Games - will take you on an in-depth tour of game mechanics, lore details, and other such kingly delights.

But first - have you wishlisted King of the Castle yet? Because for any unreleased Steam game, wishlists are the foundation that keep the castle standing strong. So help out us simple devs - give that button a click.

Today I wanted to talk about something that is pretty much the first in-game choice a Monarch has to make after starting their Dynasty. Should they choose to play a Party Game, or should they Play on Twitch?

In our current beta version, these modes are called “Browser Game” and “Twitch Game” respectively, but we’re renaming them as these terms seem to be causing some confusion.
Game of Phones
In the Party Game mode, a small group of friends (up to 24 players) can join in the Monarch’s game and play along. All they need is access to a web browser. By going to www.kotc.app, they can enter the lobby code, choose their name/pronouns, and play the game!

On their browsers, players will instantly see what region they’re in. They can also review their Schemes at a glance, tracking their stat goal and how close they are to achieving it.

One misconception we’ve already noticed about King of the Castle is that it’s a streamer-only game, but that’s not the game we set out to make at all. King of the Castle shines in smaller groups - where people can sit around a laptop or TV, or join a Discord channel, and play along together!

We imagine it working like a board game group, or a D&D party. If one Noble wins the game, the they can even take over the save file from the current Monarch and continue the Dynasty. That way, seizing the throne becomes very literal - making victory all the sweeter!
Schemes within Streams
In Play on Twitch mode, a streamer can play the game with their whole audience. All that’s needed from chat is a simple “!join” (followed by pronoun) typed in the chat box. This way, up to 3000 players can jump into the game all at once!

(Check out Lomadiah’s King of the Castle streams to see a Twitch-integrated reign going characteristically off the rails.)

We’ve already noticed that especially big streams cause some confusion when it comes to players working out what region they’re in. Don’t worry, though - this is an issue we’re actively working on right now, and a solution is in reach. Expect the fix to go live very soon!

Thanks for watching! Next week we’re going to be talking about the core mechanic of King of the Castle - voting.

A royal wave goodbye to TwitchCon San Diego 2022
A huge thank you to everyone who played KOTC!
We’re just about to fly back from San Diego to London and Toronto, but first we wanted to thank everyone who played King the Castle at TwitchCon San Diego 2022!

Whether you were playing with friends at our booth on your phones, a streamer trying to run a Kingdom consisting of your unruly chat, or Nobles on Twitch jumping in for the first time, seeing how much you all enjoyed the game meant the world to us.

We’re honestly overwhelmed with the response! We had queues of people wanting to play on the show floor, with returning Monarchs dragging friends to the booth for the pleasure of being overthrown by them.

A special thanks to our many Team17 sponsored streamers during the day, especially Blue & Queenie, and to everyone at Team17 who set up our incredible booth.

Finally, an extra special thanks to our announcement streamers, Nihachu and Lomadiah. Lomadiah has been helping us shape King of the Castle from day one and having her there at launch was the cherry on the cake. Meanwhile, Queen Nihachu ruled over a Kingdom of over a thousand Nobles (the largest we’ve ever had live in the game!) with grace and many wives.
Our public pre-release build is out!
We’ve released 0.6.1 for everyone who took a key from us at TwitchCon. If you have a key and are waiting, it’s ready for you now!

This version has both:
  • Twitch Mode - Connect to Twitch with chat playing as your Nobles
  • Browser Mode - Host a game at kotc.app and up to 24 players join there for free

Feel free to play on either at any time! We’d always appreciate a quick tweet tagging us if you do, so we can watch the fireworks.

Some features of this version we’d like to shout about:
  • Over 800 possible events
  • 16,000 choices that impact and branch the story
  • 5 regions with their own unique events and schemes to usurp the Monarch
  • Dynasty Games, where you can see what happens to your Kingdom next
  • Voting
  • Schemes
  • Buildings
  • Taxation
  • Executions
  • Wizard curses
  • Full scale rebellions against the crown
  • Nobles amassing vast amounts of wealth
  • Romancing procedurally generated spouses
  • An increasingly unlikely series of events involving spoons
  • Find yourself invaded by giants, promise to sell your Kingdom to your rebellious region’s leader in return for help, watch them get swiftly beaten by the giants, then try to escape the capital, only to be caught and subsequently eaten by said giants
  • And more!

If this all sounds like something your stream or friends might enjoy, don’t forget to wishlist the game. If you’d also like to join our streamer program to get yourself a pre-release copy, sign up to our Streamer Program here!

Finally a shout out to our favourite 0.6.1 ruler from TwitchCon, “Monarch Milkman The Pathetic”. Despite having a superb pink beard it wasn’t enough to save them from the chop. What are friends for, if not overthrowing you in a violent coup?
After the coronation
Though the response to our announcement was overwhelmingly positive, we’re still in pre-release and see plenty of space for improvement. So we at Tributary Games have dusted ourselves off and got to work on 0.6.2 immediately.

We had some great feedback and suggestions from our Discord, especially from TheMadHatter115 (our many thanks!). We’ve also been making copious notes throughout and have some very exciting improvements in the works we’ll be talking about soon...

In the meantime our studio lead Sam will be continuing his Developer Streams every Tuesday night at 7:30PM GMT/BST, 11:30AM PDT, or 2:30PM EDT. Follow our Twitch account to be notified when our development streams are live and see the latest developments from the team.

If you have any feedback yourself join the Discord above or post below! We’d love to hear it and are keen to make King of the Castle even better.

Finally, don’t forget to wishlist the game. Only one player needs to own a copy to host a game, so together you and your friends can steer the Kingdom to glory… Or ruin.

Very probably ruin.

King Of The Castle | Announcement

King of the Castle, a narrative-driven, streaming-led, PC multiplayer game set in a fictional fantasy kingdom, in development at London-based studio, Tributary Games is coming to Steam in 2023 👑

Take your rightful place on the throne and lead a fantasy Kingdom to a new Golden Age or to catastrophic disaster! Play with 3 to 3,000 other players who will make up your Council of squabbling Nobles and will vote on your every decision. Face difficult dilemmas where every option has far-reaching consequences for the Kingdom. Navigate politics, regional conflicts, and perhaps even all-out rebellion as your untrustworthy vassals scheme to overthrow you.

King of the Castle is a multiplayer fantasy game of shifting power dynamics and intrigue where the narrative is driven by its players. It features two co-op game modes:
Play with Friends
In Browser Mode, your friends can join your game as Nobles and vote on your decisions through their web browser on mobile or desktop - meaning that only one player needs to own the game.
Play on Twitch
In Streamer Mode, King of the Castle is fully integrated with the Twitch API. As the Streamer, you’ll play the Monarch and - with a simple “!join” command in chat - your audience can play as up to 3,000 Nobles of the Council, using chat commands to vote on your decisions and influence the direction your Kingdom takes!
Rule Wisely
• Make your choices carefully in your role as Monarch. All your decisions are subject to the votes of your backstabbing Nobles.
  • Balance the competing demands of the different regions of your Kingdom – each with its own desires, difficulties, and ongoing plots.
  • Bribe, persuade or intimidate your way through difficult votes that threaten to not go your way, or try to alter the laws to give yourself extra veto powers.
Make History
• Forge the unique history of your realm. As the years pass, your Kingdom will change based on your decisions and the different regions of your Kingdom will rise and fall in power.
  • Customize your Kingdom. The Monarch and Nobles can choose their own name, appearance, pronouns, and shields.
  • Execute any Nobles who get a little bit too uppity - but watch out for their allies who might seek to avenge them...
Beware Treachery
• Foil the plots of treacherous Nobles as they pursue their own schemes to replace you with a puppet ruler of their own.
  • Tax the regions of the Kingdom that get on your nerves and watch the gold (and salt) pile up!
  • Watch your back – if your Nobles’ Defiance gets too high, they might just revolt against you in an epic and bloody civil war that will tear your Kingdom apart!
Keep the Balance
• Upon joining the game, the Nobles on your Council are sorted into different regions of the Kingdom. One moment these regions will be pitted against each other - the next, changing circumstances will turn them into uneasy allies.

  • Each Noble will hail from one of the following lands:

    • The Wintry North: where the honorable Chiefs feast in clan-halls atop snowcapped mountains.
    • The Wealthy Coast: where the cunning Patricians luxuriate in their villas and run their trade guilds.
    • The Vast East: where the ruthless Counts lurk in forbidding castles within eerie forests.
    • The Untamed March: where the tough Barons guard your borders and train your troops
    • The Scorching South: where the zealous Grandees dwell in sun-bleached manors and pray to the Ninth God for salvation.

  • Based on your decisions and the votes of the Council, over the course of your reign some of these regions will become wealthy and prosperous, while others will descend into anarchy, or rebel against your rule.
  • As the Monarch, it’s up to you to keep them in check.

  • Give peace a chance… or not: As Monarch, balance the competing demands of your Nobles while keeping an eye out for brewing political unrest or revolts
