New update available - Improved Skirmish AI - v1.02.02

We are happy to report that the new update version that has been in Open Beta is now FULLY RELEASED. Grab the update today.

This new update includes a number of fixes and tweaks, as well as some of the first fixes and updates for the Skirmish AI, in regards to the AI sometimes 'stalling' in its attack during Skirmish games.

This is the first part of the AI updates so expect more AI improvements in the coming weeks (mainly focused on Skirmish & MP, but will have some effect in the campaigns too).

A full changelog for the update is here:
Headquarters: World War II
Version 1.01.02

AI Improvements:
 • Introduced a new AI purchasing algorithm in skirmish and multiplayer. Now AI should be more efficient in the way it selects new units to acquire.
 • AI now moves all units before deploying new ones. This way it cannot block its own units’ movement with the newly deployed units that cannot move this turn.

Fixes:
 • Fixed a very common crash in PBEM multiplayer.
 • UE4Editor_UEBA!TBattlefieldScreenForm::OnStateChangedUpdateSelectedObject()
 • [c:\home\baroot\battleacademy\view\tbattlefieldscreenform.cpp:658]
 • Fixed the animation lags during the AI turn.
 • Fixed crash with unit customization that happened if you delete the Preset you are using and then press the “Change preset” button.
 • Fixed crash that occurred when selecting the lowest save file in the list using Gamepad controls
 • Fixed crash when that could occur when skipping unit animations using Gamepad controls.
 • Fixed issue with user-created maps that have the same map name - they will all have the same minimap from the first map with that map name. Now, the minimaps are correct.
 • Fixed localization for the version control notifications.
 • Fixed a rare bug that allowed AI to deploy a unit on the player’s HQ.

Dev log #3 - The German campaign in the Ardennes DLC

Hello!
It is Oleksandr from Starni Games with the new Dev log entry. The upcoming Ardennes DLC has two new campaigns - the German and the US. Today, we will examine the German campaign to see what it has in store for you when the Ardennes DLC comes out.

GERMAN CAMPAIGN

As you know, the Ardennes Offensive, also known as, the Battle of the Bulge, started on December 16th, 1944, following Operation Market Garden. In the first days, there was no snow despite it being the middle of December, so we tried to recreate that weather in the game. That is why the first few battles look more like late autumn than winter. Here is the list of operations and weather conditions in them:

1. Battle for Auw | No snow
2. Breakthrough at Andler | No snow
3. Encirclement at Schoenberg | No snow
4. Battle of the Schnee Eifel Pocket | No snow
5. St. Vith Assault | Snowfall + night
6. Ourthe Crossing | Snow, fair weather
7. Rochefort Assault | Snow, fair weather
8. Push for Celles | Snowfall

The campaign follows the central axis of the German Offensive, including the capture of St. Vith and eventually breaking through as far as Celles. At the same time, the US campaign will be focused more on the Battle for Bastogne.

In command of the German troops, you must ensure the successful advance of your forces and take control of several vital towns in Ardennes. In some missions, the weather would not be in your favor, but you will have to persist, despite the adversity.

As you push forward, the enemy will put up ever stronger resistance, until you reach a breaking point at Celles, where the battle will be as tough as it gets, and you will have to push your tactical skills to a limit to find a way to overcome strong enemy forces and arriving reinforcements. We did our best to try and replicate the increasing difficulty that the German army met in the Ardennes, ultimately losing momentum and stopping the advance, only to be pushed back very soon.

The campaign starts in high spirits and ends in extremely tough and gruesome battles that tire out the already weakened German forces forcing them on the back foot once again. Still, it is one of the last German offensives in the war, and it is fascinating to recreate those epochal events.

The weather plays a crucial role in the campaign, as it dictates the visibility on the battlefield. Advance in bad weather is extremely risky, as you can run right into the enemy positions at close range. At the same time, you are also getting extra camouflage to hide your troops’ movement. So, having good reconnaissance and moving your troops inconspicuously are even more vital skills in bad weather conditions.

The campaign features new German and US units, a new German character, 3 new German heroes, and an updated set of German awards. Although, the awards are a sore point for the team - there are not so many historically accurate new awards we could provide to the player that would fit the character’s rank and achievements, so we had to use some of the ones we also awarded in Normandy - there are just not so many other existing real awards that we could add.

To sum up, 8 new challenging battles await you with new units, autumn and winter environment assets, characters, heroes, awards, and unique combat situations. We really hope that you will be excited to explore the Ardennes and relive the momentous events. While we keep working to improve the game and provide new challenges for your tactical skills.

P.S. We are also working on some changes to the multiplayer balance to make tanks a more viable choice in competitive multiplayer games. We will update you on that in the next Dev log entries.

See you next time!

Dev log #2 - New units in the Ardennes DLC

Hello!
It is Oleksandr from Starni Games with the new Dev log entry. Following the previous Dev log, I would like to tell you more about new units that will be added in Ardennes and become available in campaigns, skirmishes, and multiplayer.
NEW UNITS
Ardennes DLC featuring the Battle of the Bulge naturally follows the events of the Normandy landings and the Market Garden campaign. So, it allowed us to add a few units that became available in late 1944 and winter 1944-1945.

On top of historical considerations, we felt that UK and US factions in skirmish and multiplayer lack the top-of-the-line tanks that would be at least comparable to the Tiger and Tiger II. That is why we took the liberty to add two notable exceptions to our historically accurate roaster - T26Е1 Super Pershing (USA) and Centurion (UK). Those tanks never were in Ardennes, and the Centurion did not participate in World War II, as it only entered service in 1946. These tanks will not appear in historical campaigns, and will only appear in Skirmish and Multiplayer modes, as we wanted to introduce a few more advanced tanks to the US and UK. With all that in mind, we managed to add 12 new units across the 3 countries. Here are all the new units:

New German units:

New US units:

New UK units:

As you can see, there are 3 German units, 5 US units, and 4 British ones. In the Ardennes, you will play as Germany and USA in two respective campaigns, but we also added a few UK units for Skirmish and Multiplayer. Moreover, with the T26Е1 Super Pershing (USA) and Centurion (UK) addition, all 3 countries now have advanced heavy tanks capable of performing well against any opposing country’s armored units.
GERMAN UNITS
Jagdpanzer IV
This anti-tank self-propelled gun is armed with a long-barreled 75 mm KwK 42 gun, boasting a higher level of armor penetration. The lack of a turret makes this tank destroyer harder to spot on the battlefield. In addition, this unit has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

Jagdpanzer IV is a good addition to your mobile anti-tank capabilities that is quite cost-efficient and allows you to combat top-of-the-line enemy tanks effectively.

Panzerwerfer 42
This light armored, half-tracked multiple rocket launcher is armed with 155 mm Nebelwerfer 41 rockets that inflict massive damage to enemy infantry. Its attacks ignore obstacles and terrain.

Panzerwerfer 42 is extremely effective at eliminating or demoralizing enemy infantry units. You can use it to get rid of the enemy infantry in the open, or demoralize and rout a well-entrenched infantry unit.

Wirbelwind
This self-propelled anti-aircraft gun is based on a medium tank and armed with a quadruple mount of 20 mm cannons, Flakvierling 38. It is effective against enemy infantry and lightly armored vehicles. This unit is also capable of intercepting enemy aircraft. In addition, it has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

Wirbelwind is mobile and very effective against all types of targets except the heavily armored ones. Its autocannons are deadly against infantry and light vehicles. So, you can use it to both protect your troops from air attacks and suppress the enemy infantry when needed.
US UNITS
M36 Jackson
This self-propelled anti-tank vehicle armed with a 90 mm long-range M3 cannon is extremely effective against both enemy vehicles and infantry. It also has decent armor, but its mobility leaves a lot to be desired.

M36 Jackson is one the strongest AT weapons at the US troops' disposal, however, it has average mobility, so you should only go for it, if you need firepower over mobility to be able to deal with the top-notch enemy armor.

M24 Chaffee
M24 Chaffee is a lightly armored tank armed with a 75 mm M3 gun that performs well both in battles against infantry and lightly armored vehicles. In addition, it has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

This new light tank is available to both US and UK forces and could be a good combination of decent mobility and firepower.

76 mm gun M5
This heavy 76 mm long-range anti-tank gun is extremely effective against enemy armor, but less useful against infantry. However, it has limited mobility and requires a means of transportation for effective traversal of the battlefield.

A cost-effective way to defend against the enemy armored assault. The key downsides are as with all towed units - its vulnerability and lack of mobility.

M26 Pershing
This mobile heavy tank with a 90 mm long-range M3 cannon is extremely effective against both enemy vehicles and infantry. It has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

We have waited for a long time to add the M26 Pershing into the game so that the US forces have a tank that can hold its own against the Tiger and Panther tanks in terms of firepower and armor. We could not add it in both Normandy campaigns and Market Garden, but now, finally, it has arrived. Even though historically it arrived at the frontlines only closer to the end of the Battle of the Bulge, and in very limited numbers. Still, we could not miss this opportunity to finally pitch it against the best German and UK tanks.

T26Е1 Super Pershing
This heavy tank with a powerful 90 mm T15E1 gun and thick armor is capable of single-handedly dealing with almost any enemy. In addition, it has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

T26Е1 Super Pershing is an exception from our history-based approach, as it was designed during WWII and produced in 1945, but never entered mass production and did not have any significant impact on the historical battles. The main reason behind its addition is to add a more powerful tank to the UK and US troops in Skirmish and Multiplayer, which would be more evenly matched against the Tiger II tanks of the German troops. It is not present in the Ardennes historical campaigns.
UK UNITS
Comet
This fast medium tank has a 76 mm high velocity long-range anti-tank gun, boasting a higher level of armor penetration. The phenomenal maneuverability of this medium tank comes with a cost of less armor. This unit is extremely effective against enemy armor, but less useful against infantry. However, it has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

Comet has good mobility and exceptional firepower, making it a solid choice for a medium tank that can be effective against enemy heavy tanks, although quite vulnerable to enemy attacks.

Sherman Firefly Tulip
This Sherman Firefly tank with an RP-3 rocket launcher additionally installed on its hull is capable of ignoring obstacles and terrain. It also has a mounted machine gun to engage enemy infantry at close range.

Sherman Firefly Tulip is the first tank with the rocket launcher installed on the UK unit list. That makes it a quite versatile combination of tank’ and short-range rocket artillery’ capabilities.

Centurion
This heavy tank, armed with a 76 mm long-range anti-tank gun Ordnance QF 17-pounder, is extremely effective against enemy vehicles, but less useful against infantry. In addition, this unit has a mounted machine gun for close-range combat against enemy infantry.

Centurion tank is one of the two tanks that should not have been in the DLC from a historical perspective, but we added them to skirmish and multiplayer games to allow both the UK and the US to have a more powerful heavy tank at their disposal to put up a better fight against the top-notch German armor. While it is not a part of historical campaigns, we hope you will enjoy playing it in skirmishes and multiplayer games.

Stay tuned to learn more about the two new campaigns that will be available in the Ardennes DLC.

P.S. We are actively working on AI improvements and Multiplayer stability, and we invite you to join the open beta branch of Headquarters: World War II on Steam if you want to be the first to check out all the newest updates even before they are delivered to the general audience. Dev log #1 - Winter warfare is coming in Ardennes DLC

Hello!
It is Oleksandr from Starni Games with the new Dev log entry. This time we will look at how our team worked on changing the game look from the Normandy summer to the Ardennes winter.
NEW LOOK
Despite the Battle of the Bulge starting in mid-December, the weather was actually snowless in the first few days of the German offensive - so, it looked like a very late autumn rather than winter. You can see that in the first few maps of the German campaign, so do not be confused, as we based the weather in those missions on the historical accounts of the German advance.

After the first few days though, a heavy snow started, completely transforming the battlefields. We reflected that in the later portion of the German campaign and the entire US campaign (as it starts later). We now have houses, cars, terrain, you name it, all covered in snow.

Such changes in weather call for changes in uniform, camouflage, and tactics. The vehicles and infantry need to blend in with the snowy terrain, while the winter uniforms help the soldiers keep themselves warm.
NEW TERRAIN TYPES - MUD, DEEP SNOW and ICE
Ardennes DLC features new terrain types, namely - mud, deep snow, and ice. The mud comes in the mid-December portion of the campaign, where there was no snow historically, and it was closer to late autumn in terms of weather, so you can see muddy roads slowing your advance.

Yet, once the snow came it was aplenty. Now, there is deep snow that makes it hard to move both infantry units and vehicles, but at the same time offers some extra cover and camouflage. It also looks mesmerising when vehicles move through it, have a look:

The rivers are half-frozen, and you can find some places where the ice on the river is strong enough to allow your troops to make an improvised river crossing.
WINTER UNIFORMS
We have to keep the infantry warm in the frosty winter, so we also created a new set of models for all infantry units to accurately replicate the winter uniforms and equipment.

Here are some of the US troops:

And here are some of the Germans:
WINTER CAMOUFLAGE
Last but not least, there are new camouflage patterns and presets incoming to allow you to customize your units’ camo for the winter battles to come:

Stay tuned to learn more about all the new unit models that will be available in the Ardennes DLC.
