Designing Armor - Dragonkin: The Banished Dev Blog

Hello Hunters!

This week, we’re going to show you how we create a complete armor set for a character, as well as their variations and how these impact gameplay.

An armor set consists of four pieces found throughout gameplay, along with two weapons. Adding the two craftable accessories (ring and potions) and the necklace, your character has a total of 9 equipment slots.

When creating an armor set, like the one for the Knight above. First, we choose a theme for the armor. It could be a Dragon type, a region of the game, or something linked to the character. After which we sculpt the base version and apply an initial material, such as this rusted look. Then, we experiment with different materials to add visual variety.

For each endgame armor piece, you can add an ornament. An ornament is a crafted item that you’ll need to make yourself. It serves both as a visual enhancement (for example, the top of the helmet in the image) and as a functional part of your build by providing stats and bonuses.

There are 4 specific ornaments for each endgame armor piece, each with unique visuals and bonuses. Once crafted, they’ll be available for each similar armor piece you find—you won’t need to craft them again.

Of course, we have a system that allows you to change the appearance of your armor and ornaments while keeping the stats of other items.

We hope you enjoyed learning how we design our armors. Of course, ornaments are just a small part of the game’s itemization system, which we’ll probably discuss in more detail later.

And as a bonus, here's a look at one of the endgame armor sets for the Oracle with its variations and ornaments.
