Designing Armor - Dragonkin: The Banished Dev Blog

Hello Hunters!

This week, we’re going to show you how we create a complete armor set for a character, as well as their variations and how these impact gameplay.

An armor set consists of four pieces found throughout gameplay, along with two weapons. Adding the two craftable accessories (ring and potions) and the necklace, your character has a total of 9 equipment slots.

When creating an armor set, like the one for the Knight above. First, we choose a theme for the armor. It could be a Dragon type, a region of the game, or something linked to the character. After which we sculpt the base version and apply an initial material, such as this rusted look. Then, we experiment with different materials to add visual variety.

For each endgame armor piece, you can add an ornament. An ornament is a crafted item that you’ll need to make yourself. It serves both as a visual enhancement (for example, the top of the helmet in the image) and as a functional part of your build by providing stats and bonuses.

There are 4 specific ornaments for each endgame armor piece, each with unique visuals and bonuses. Once crafted, they’ll be available for each similar armor piece you find—you won’t need to craft them again.

Of course, we have a system that allows you to change the appearance of your armor and ornaments while keeping the stats of other items.

We hope you enjoyed learning how we design our armors. Of course, ornaments are just a small part of the game’s itemization system, which we’ll probably discuss in more detail later.

And as a bonus, here's a look at one of the endgame armor sets for the Oracle with its variations and ornaments.

We'll be back with more Developer Blogs and Sneak Peeks in the near future. Don't forget to wishlist Dragonkin: The Banished and join our Discord if you'd like to chat with developers and other fans.

Sneak Peek at some of the Dragonkin roster!

Hello future Dragon Hunters,

Over the past few weeks, we've been sharing some snippets on our developer discord (yes, that is a shameless plug). Since these are usually small teasers, we won't post everything there onto Steam - we wouldn't want to flood the channels.

However, when appropriate, we'll bring these assets together and share them as part of larger pieces like the one you're reading right now!

So, without further ado. We're going to give you a very quick introduction to some of the playable characters in Dragonkin. We're planning to deep-dive into their character, playstyle, itemization, and abilities later on, so definitely stay tuned for that!
Knight
The Knight is a stalwart defender, trained in combat from a young age to master the Dragon Lance. He usually is the first to charge into combat, but mechanical innovations to his lance allow it to bellow out fire to keep the enemy hordes at bay. While this may look rather draconic, the Knight eschews all forms of draconic corruption, instead fueled by his powerful faith in the Eternal and strict moral code.
Oracle
The caste that the Oracle hails from have been transformed by the power of blue dragon blood. It's a power that imbues her people with powerful electric abilities. Ultimately, she dreams of a realm where humans and dragon can live side by side, but knows that dangerous Dragons must be fought off to achieve that.
Barbarian
The hardiest of the Barbarian who survive the ritual of ingesting White Dragon Blood can harness its power of ice. The dragon's blood mingles with their own, granting these warriors a supernatural strength that makes them more powerful as long as they remain in battle.

We'll have more to share on these heroes, and on the Tracker in the future. Please check out our social channels to stay up to date on everything related to Dragonkin: The Banished. We'll be back shortly hunters, but until then stay ready.

Welcome to the Dragonkin: The Banished Devblog!

After the last updates to Chaosbane nearly 4 years ago, we took our first steps working with Unreal Engine 4. A few months later, we began drafting the first elements of the universe and game design for our next ARPG project, which would eventually become Dragonkin: The Banished. After several months of pre-production, this time on Unreal 5, we officially started production around 3 years ago.

Today, we're excited to welcome you to the very first devblog in a series that will allow us to share more and more about the development of our new Hack & Slash. It’s intended to share our progress and ideas as we move through the final stages of development on Dragonkin, a project that has been a passion of ours for several years now.
But what is Dragonkin?
Dragonkin is a Hack & Slash set in a completely original universe created by our team. Unlike our previous Hack & Slash, Chaosbane, which was based on an existing universe, Dragonkin takes place in a brand-new world, though one deeply rooted in a theme we love: medieval fantasy (with spoiler alert, dragons!).

We’re deep into production, with about 30 people actively working on the project. Various elements like graphics, gameplay, UI, game systems, animations, visual effects, sounds, and even music are starting to come together, and the game is beginning to take shape. This is an exciting time for us, as we’ll be able to reveal more about the game in the coming weeks and months.

In upcoming posts, we’ll share more details about different aspects of the game: its universe, theory crafting, itemization, enemies, playable characters, and more. For now, we’re excited to share this first visual of our armored Knight!
