Performance and Optimisation Update!

Hi Archfriends!

Luke here, I’m the technical director at League of Geeks.

It’s not long now until you can get your hands on Solium Infernum.. We’re less than 24 hours away from launch!

In the meantime, I wanted to swing by and proudly report that we’ve made huge strides with our optimisation and performance! This couldn’t have been possible without the help of our Hellraisers and all of you who provided us with various data points, thank you so much!

So let me dive into it!
Updated System Requirements
First up, we’ve updated our Minimum Specs for the game on our steam page. The games industry can be a little inconsistent with defining system requirements, but you will find both our Minimum and Recommended Specs for playing Solium Infernum available on the Steam page now, complete with what settings those specs were benchmarked at.
Minimum Specs
Minimum requirements are considered the line where – if any lower – the performance would be distracting to the basic gameplay experience. For us at LoG, we defined this minimum as running at 'Low' quality settings, at a resolution of 1920x1080 at 30 frames per second.

 • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
 • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
 • Processor: IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i5-7400
 • Memory: 8 GB RAM
 • Graphics: NVIDIAĀ® GeForceĀ® GTX 1050 Ti
 • DirectX: Version 11
 • Storage: 8 GB available space
Recommended Specs
Recommended requirements are the line where the vast, vast majority of Steam users can experience the full, glory of Solium Infernum as intended. This isn’t necessarily everything at crazy ultra high levels on the biggest monitors and a bajillion FPS, but rather where there are no compromises to players experiencing our vision. We defined that as running at ā€˜High’ quality settings, at a resolution of 2560x1440 at 60 frames per second.

 • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
 • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
 • Processor: IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i5-10400
 • Memory: 12 GB RAM
 • Graphics: NVIDIAĀ® GeForceĀ® RTX 2060
 • DirectX: Version 11
 • Storage: 8 GB available space

These are the current specs for launch and we expect them to remain here for the foreseeable future, but we are still iterating on our optimisation and performance so you may see performance improvements as some post-launch quality of life patches surface. Our goal, naturally, is to make Solium Infernum as accessible as possible with our given resources.
How has Solium Infernum’s Performance Improved?
Since the Multiplayer Weekend, we’ve been working hard on responding to all the feedback we’ve received, especially for performance and stability! To date, there have been almost 4000 commits (updates to our codebase and in-game assets) since the multiplayer weekend!

In short, you should find that performance has improved a lot. We’ll briefly overview some of the things we’ve done to optimise Solium Infernum below. More broadly, when comparing the Multiplayer Weekend build with the Launch Build on Ultra quality settings, the average frame rate has increased from ~33 FPS to ~80 FPS! An improvement of well over 100%. We’re really proud of this – and the team has worked incredibly hard to achieve the new specs!

You can see our analysis tools running a comparison of the Multiplayer Weekend build and our current release candidate here.

Note: P95 is short for ā€˜95th percentile’, etc!

Note ^2: running the frame rate analysis tool will reduce the framerate as well (~10FPS) however because it does it to both the comparison is still valid.
Quality Settings
Our quality settings during the Multiplayer Weekend were very much in progress. Most folks found that shifting to ā€œLowā€ didn’t really offer a lot of improvements to performance beyond VRAM usage, which typically won’t provide a better framerate.

Aside from the top level Low, Medium, High and Ultra settings, players will now have the ability to customise Solium Infernum for the experience they prefer based on their hardware, whether that’s higher resolution, fidelity or frame rate.
Textures, textures, textures…
Solium Infernum is a game with a LOT of incredible high quality 2D art. Maybe counter intuitively, 2D textures are often more expensive than 3D when it comes to games. So this was a huge focus of our optimisation pass.

First we did an audit of every texture in the game, reducing their resolution based on their maximum on-screen size and as a result halved the memory footprint of the entire game’s texture budget.

We also created a new bespoke decal renderer that offered greater flexibility and performance.

Our engineers also went through a process of ā€œatlasingā€ some of our textures, which is the process of combining multiple textures into a single larger texture, and then only displaying the bit you need to when you use it. In some circumstances this process can be a big performance improvement.
Other Improvements
There were so many other performance improvements and optimisation work we’ve done in the past month, but we’d like to call out a few that we are particularly meaningful:

 • Making sure the game board can loop back on itself is some serious technical magic, and expensive! So there was further optimisation of some of our board wrapping rendering techniques, in particular how we combine various cameras together for the final frame.
 • Adding more multithreading and asynchronous features for AI as well as auto-saving.
 • Optimised noise textures and rendering methods for the game’s fog/clouds to improve GPU performance. Roughly 300% more efficient!
 • 487 individual VFX assets were manually (yes, one by one, by hand!!!) updated and optimised to reduce particle capacity and overdraw, without loss of quality.
 • And we’ve integrated a number of bespoke features like a static fallback for animating cards and archfiends, among other little tricks of the trade and safety mechanisms.
 • Our systems administrator, Adrian, also built a bank of PCs at the studio with the weirdest build combinations comparable to our min spec to utilise for testing. Super helpful!

This was such a big effort from our engineering, art and tech-art teams to ensure that Solium Infernum is as accessible and performant as possible for launch. We really hope it translates well into your playthroughs when we go live in a few days!

Now it’s worth stating the obvious here… the infernal nature of PC software development is that every single PC is a unique combination of parts, drivers and software. So while many improvements have been made and if you’re playing our game at or above min spec you’re extremely likely to have a good time, we can’t catch every single performance quirk or bug for every individual player’s setup ahead of launch. So if you do encounter any issues you feel you shouldn’t or encounter performance below the expectations we’ve set here, send an in-game bug report and we’ll take a look! They go straight to the dev team and we read and triage every single one.

Oh and lastly, don’t forget to update your drivers before descending into Solium Infernum!

See you in Hell... Tomorrow!

Launching Feb 22! šŸ”„ Here's 10 Tips for Surviving Hell!

Top 10 Tips to Survive in Hell

For those that don't know...

Solium Infernum will be available on Steam February 22 @ 12pm PST!
Tip 1: Know Thy Regency (Turn Order)
The order in which turns resolve in Solium Infernum is determined by the ā€œRegentā€. As Regent, your turn is up first! This means that if you’re vying for a particularly tricksy play, or are marching around the map, you’ll act before the other players this round. After your first order has concluded, everyone will take their first order clockwise from the Regent. It is the Archfiends who plan their turns with Regency in mind who will reign supreme in Hell.
Tip 2: Play the Board, Before the Board Plays You
Places of Power (known as PoPs) are important locations around Hell that can grant you certain benefits. You need only conquer and acquire them!

One of the benefits of PoPs is a passive buff to your Prestige. In the Trial of the Throne (which can decide the winner of the game), this will help you immensely in breaking ahead of the pack. Quickly acquiring Prestige also means you'll be able to acquire Ranks faster, or utilise specific diplomatic actions against your fellow Archfiends.

Some Places of Power also give you other benefits, like Resistance to certain Rituals and improved Tribute Quality, among many other things... Safe to say: your opponents will likely claim these PoPs if you don’t, so don't forget to play the field!
Tip 3: Heal Thyself
In the conquest of Hell, things are likely to get a little… Bloody. Any Legion or Titan that has lost health points (HP) can be healed. Your Stronghold (your base), as well as any Places of Power (PoPs) acquired will give a passive healing bonus by parking in an adjacent canton. Some benefits in Solium Infernum will increase your rate of healing, too! Meaning that you can get back into the action faster.
Tip 4: Money Rules The World
Earning currency in Solium Infernum comes in the form of ā€œtributeā€ offered up by your underlings. Your Tribute Quality determines how good the coins you acquire are. Enough tribute opens you up to do particularly wicked things like purchase at the Bazaar, play an Event Card or upgrade your Powers! Tribute really can be the gateway to a successful conquest (this style of play is dubbed ā€œEconomyā€).

An additional hot tip, the effectiveness of Seek Tribute is altered by how early in your turn you put the Order. If you put it in your first Order Slot, it will return with maximum tribute dollars -- every Order Slot after the first will degrade the quality of the coins that return to you.
Tip 5: Beware of the Dogpile
Winning the Seat of Hell is all about opportunism. At any point, the game might tip on its axis, and the house of cards could come tumbling down. Sometimes a successful game of Solium Infernum is achieved by creeping in the shadows and waiting until the game’s frontrunners expose a flank you might drive a dagger into!

You can use Diplomatic Actions to force your opponents into tight binds. Use your Insult and Demand actions for a quick Prestige-win when you know your opponent simply cannot risk entering into a Vendetta with you. But beware: Insult and Demand have different repercussions, and you never know what your opponent might be hiding.
Tip 6: The Art of War (Stratagems and Support)
Stratagems are an exclusive benefit to the Wrath branch of the Power Tree. With these secret cards, you can give a temporary, one-off bonus to your Legions in a battle. Up against Astaroth’s meaty, melee heavy legion? Dump a clutch bonus to your Ranged attribute to eradicate them before they can even reach you in the field.

Alternatively, if you find yourself in need of some bigger buffs, you can park another Legion adjacent to your own and add half of their stats to your combatting Legions!
Tip 7: Praetor Combat: Gladiator-Style
Praetor Duelling is a wonderful way to earn some Prestige if your military is on the backfoot. By purchasing a Praetor from the Bazaar, you can send them to reconcile your Vendettas in a gladiatorial arena against another Praetor. You are given a subset of Moves this Praetor could use to destroy their opponent in hellish glory! You can even give a little bit of extra tribute as a bribe to the judge to make sure your Praetor wins.

Remember: Skulls beat Orbs beats Snake beats Skulls.
Tip 8: Prophecy Sees All
Using Prophecy in Solium Infernum is a wonderful way to participate in the meta-currency of the game: information. By using Rituals, you can cast Dark Augury to spy on the Powers of your fellow Archfiends, can cast dark hexes to perturb your rivals and can see through false intentions: whether that be thieves attempting to break into your Vault, liars attempting to forge False Orders or the infinite other deceitful acts of Hell.
Tip 9: Manuscripts are Dark Horses
At first glance, Manuscripts do not seem like much at all. They are fragments of larger tomes that need to be collected and combined to have any effect. In the early game, sacrificing precious Order Slots to Search for Manuscripts is a hard bargain – there’s much else to focus on! However, those with the long-game in mind know the true value of the Manuscripts, especially the Machines. These Machines can grind all other Archfiend’s Powers down to their base levels, a particularly brutal blow to deliver in the final few turns of a Solium Infernum match, and a delicious ace to keep up your sleeve, so long as you can find all the pieces.
Tip 10: Watch for the Power Behind the Throne
Not everything – and everyone – is always what it seems. In Solium Infernum, there is the obvious path to victory with the Trial of the Throne, decided by who has the most Prestige by the Conclave at the end of the match. Then, there are more subtle paths to victory… These are known as Manipulation Victories and are relics that can be equipped at game start.

The Crown of the Kingmaker requires you to choose an Archfiend as a puppet. If the Conclave elects your puppet to the Throne, you win instead.

Power Behind the Throne requires you to pledge yourself to another Archfiend as a Blood Vassal. If the Conclave elects your Blood Lord to the Throne, you win instead.

These tips should set you on your path for infernal domination, but if anyone asks… You didn’t hear it from us!

In the mean time...

See you (very soon) in Hell,

Ty

Hello Archfriends!

We’re just dropping by to announce that we have decided to shift Solium Infernum’s launch date.

Solium Infernum will now go live on February 22 @ 12pm PST!

We have no major concerns for release, we are simply in the privileged position of being able to give ourselves a little more time. So we’re taking the opportunity to spend an extra week ensuring it's as polished as we possibly can for release.

We're incredibly excited about how the game is coming together and cannot wait for all of you to descend into Hell with us.

If you’re eager to hang out with the devs, get in on the launch hype and have access to a LFG (looking for game) channel in our SI community – hop into our Discord!

See you in Hell… Very soon!

Enter Beelzebub: Lord of the Flies (Archfiend Reveal)

Perhaps you have seen her debut over on PCGamesN? Well, it only makes sense that you would end here. It is said that everything ends with … her.

She appears as all things cast away. A dried husk. All appendages and slack-jawed skulls and blackened gums. Old accounts suggest that she was once one of the greatest Celestials, a beacon for the will of the Tyrant. Cast out by his immovable hand, Hell has awoken in her an eternal and terrible hunger.

Her true name is the churning of foul insects, the growl of a nest of enraged wasps, the elated guzzling of maggots on the long-dead. You, however, will know her as…

The Lord of the Flies will be a favorite for those who enjoy horrifying and consuming your opponents.

Beelzebub has an insatiable appetite for power and carnage. She enjoys liquifying her victims with bile and drinking them whole. Her ambition is nothing less than crushing her opponents and consuming every last part of them.

That which is meaty – the fleshy, juices and all – that is where she hungers, what she consumes. Not enough, of course. And it will never be.

Beelzebub’s Starting Powers

The Ever-Hungry

Beelzebub exists such as an evil, elemental force, at times unable to control her own repellent desires. A master of fear and terror, her agents - the Order of the Fly - have infiltrated the deepest halls of Pandemonium, and perhaps - even into the Strongholds of her rivals.

Spawn of Beelzebub; Beelzebub’s Elite Legion

ā€˜Gula’, Beelzebub’s Stronghold

Summoning Beelzebub

The only question left is…

Are you ready to conquer Hell with Beelzebub?

In the mean time...

See you (very soon) in Hell,

Ty
