Development Log: Lantern Rope and Railing Systems Under Development

Hello everyone,

Eaves is being developed intensively. Today, we'd like to report the latest progress. Currently, we are working on two common decorative items: the lantern rope and the railing. To make the placement more convenient and efficient, both items come with a simple automated generation function, enabling players to place and adjust them more easily.

Please take a look at the current effect in the following video:

Look forward to the next update of the development log! If you're interested in Eaves, remember to add the game to your wishlist.

Eaves DevLog: The gameplay of the Quest mode

Hello everyone.

This is a dev log of *Eaves*.

At present, Eaves consists of a Quest mode and a free construction mode! In the Quest mode, through a series of small tasks, players are guided to reproduce classic small scenes such as famous paintings, real ancient buildings, and scenes described in ancient poems and texts, and unlock the corresponding block resources. Then, with the unlocked resources, players can freely create ancient-style scenes in the free construction mode.

The gameplay of the Quest mode demonstrated in this video is exemplified by the fortune-telling stand scene in *Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival*! The next video will be a complete demonstration video integrating the level mode and the creative mode.

Eaves Dev Log: Tutorial Video Demo is here!

Hello everyone, after a period of silence, we’re finally sharing our latest update.

The video shows a small demo based on the fortune-telling stall scene from the Along the River During the Qingming Festival painting.

At first, we were concerned that with too many tile assets, completing tasks in the level mode would require constantly searching through menus, which felt cumbersome. So we tried simplifying the process—resources related to each small task are now displayed directly. Testing it out, the flow feels much smoother.

Overall, Eaves will be a fun and free-form cyber museum of Chinese culture, delivered through a series of small levels. Completing levels unlocks special related resources, which can then be used in the free sandbox mode to create your own ancient-style world. Currently, I’m starting with Along the River During the Qingming Festival because reference materials for this piece are quite comprehensive. In the future, we plan to include various classical paintings, ancient architecture, and even classical poetry and prose, all integrated into levels of different sizes.

What do you think!

DevLog: The Art Style Change of Eaves (重檐)

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
After finalizing the core gameplay of my ancient Chinese-inspired casual building game Eaves, I’ve been obsessing over how to optimize the art style.

I spent ages searching for a simple yet stylish 3D modeling approach—but nothing clicked. At first, I tried traditional modeling (UV unwrapping, texturing…). Painfully time-consuming, and the results were… meh. 😅

Then, Blender’s Grease Pencil caught my eye (thanks, splash screen!). But turns out, it’s not super user-friendly, and exporting to Unity was a headache.

The Breakthrough? While browsing Sketchfab for inspiration, I stumbled on models with this charming hand-painted vibe—all made in Quill, a VR 3D drawing tool!

And wow—it’s a game-changer! 🚀

✅ Sculpt models in 3D space (like digital clay!)
✅ Animate directly in VR
✅ Buttery-smooth Unity integration

(No ads—it’s free! Though barely updated… please don’t die, Quill.)
Now, I’m rebuilding ALL assets in VR hand-painted style! Perfect for solo devs:

✨ No texture maps (just vertex painting!)
✨ Less stress over tiny details
✨ Pure, stylized charm
(Just don’t get motion sickness… or shaky hands!)

What do you think of the style? 👀 If you dig it, wishlist Chongyan on Steam to support the journey!
