Only Lead Can Stop Them – Devlog #2 – The Astra Pistol

Saludos amigos y amigas.

Welcome to the first weapon devlog for Only Lead Can Stop Them!
Only Lead has quite a varied lineup of guns for players to choose from. From submachine guns
to flamethrowers and dynamite. But, I ask you, what would their arsenal be without a trusty
pistol? That little blicky that you know you can always rely on if you run out of ammo for the big
guns. That’s the Astra Pistol!



The Astra 400 was the standard issue sidearm in the Spanish army during the Spanish Civil
War, and so it is in Only Lead as well. A strong and reliable pistol, especially under mud and
sand conditions. Perfect for the dirty trenches you will inevitably traverse.

In Only Lead, the Astra Pistol fires at a medium rate and has a decently wide spread. Which
doesn’t seem great at a first glance. It is your starter weapon after all, maybe it is meant to be
replaced sooner rather than later? Well you see, the pistol has a secondary function...
It can headshot enemies if aimed for a short while before firing.



“Aiming for a headshot in an old-school boomer-shooter? That’s crazy!” I hear you say. Well
that’s just the Only Lead: Astra Pistol for you. By aiming the crosshair towards an enemy and
waiting just a second, you can see the crosshair getting smaller until it’s only a dot. That’s when
you want to pull the trigger! The headshot does massive damage and can take out most low
ranking/low health enemies in one single shot. Very ammo conserving and satisfying!

During playtesting, we felt like the pistol was often thrown aside and forgotten as soon as
players got their hands on bigger weaponry, like the SMG for example. So we wanted to give
that little extra something to keep the gun relevant in some situations.
The SMG uses the same ammo type as the pistol, but fires faster at the cost of a wider bullet
spread. This means you can kill enemies faster at close range. Just an upgrade right? Well
maybe if you’re the spray and pray type of fellow.

But for those moments when you want to pick off a lone guard at a distance, with as low ammo
cost as possible, then bring out your trusty little sidearm. *PLOP*! Goodnight fascist bastard.

Patch Notes, Demo Full Arsenal Version 0.02

Hello!

The team has been hard at work perfecting the game in preparation for its release. A lot of these changes include improvements that we felt was needed to be present in the demo version of the game. We have now adressed this and made an update to the demo.

  • Added ability to change keybinding for controls
  • Added a Minimap function to help with navigation
  • Added more graphics options such as adjustable Field Of View
  • Added localization of the game for over 20 languages


[h3]Tweaks:[/h3]
  • Visuals of the grenade explosions have changed.


[h3]Bug Fixes:[/h3]
  • Enemy movement, especially melee types has gotten better pathfinding and behavior.

Hello all you fierce Militias!

Welcome to the first devlog of Only Lead Can Stop Them, developed by Warcry Interactive and published by Retrovibe.
My name is Dan Pettersson and I’m the creative director and technical artist.

[h3]Only Lead Can Stop Them & Warcry Interactive[/h3]

OLCST or Only Lead, as we sometimes call our loooooong titled game, is developed by Warcry Interactive, a Swedish team of game developers situated on the countries west coast. The game depicts the horrors of The Spanish Civil War thru the lens of a retro first person shooter. OLCST is big on staying thru to the roots of the FPS genre and takes inspiration from the master pieces of the 1990s. Looking at the game you can see that the art style, the movement, the level design all the tons of fun makes you think you have stepped in to a time machine to experience the sweet memories of your childhood digital carnage.

[h3]OLCST & Retrovibe[/h3]


This year Warcry Interactive found the partner we were looking for to make OLCST the game we dreamed of. Retrovibe is game publisher from Poland that shares our love for the FPS-genre as well as a retro art style. They early on could understand our vision and they bring a great deal of experience of the industry and how to make an impact in the marketplace.

[h3]Inspirations[/h3]


Being a student of history and lover of games I’ve always dreamed of combining these two interest in to a passion project. OLCST has become that dream. Part of the inspiration for the game is different diaries of the Swedish volunteer soldiers that participated in the Spanish civil war with all the bravery and perseverance that they went thru as they descended into the madness of war.
Other inspirations are great games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Heretic and Quake to name a few. Being inspired means to us to not only imitate what’s great about these games but also complement and add to this rich legacy by creating something special and unique that was missing among the classics.

[h3]Game concepts[/h3]


OLCST is centered around a fast paced maneuvering to avoid enemy projectiles. It has lots of gun battles from a varied arsenal of weapons. The enemies are many and come in many forms and sizes. Some have guns, others claws and teeth and some uses supernatural powers to stop you from reaching your goals.

The game has a lot of exploration with hidden secrets and treasures to be found.

It has boss fights and lots of carnage.

The game has been in development for about three years and we are looking for a release by late 2024. Many great people has contributed to taking this game far in the development. Currently we are working on some new exciting ideas that will take the game to the next level of fun.

Release of Full Arsenal Update for Demo

Hello!

Since the release of the demo a few months ago we have been hard at work building new levels and content for the upcoming release of Only Lead Can Stop Them. We have improved the gameplay a lot and added new features and an update to the demo was well needed to reflect the current level of quality.

  • Settings for adjustable audio with different channels for music and SFX
  • Full arsenal of weapons
  • Saving system
  • Settings for graphics giving a choice between retro and modern resolutions

  • Balanced enemies

Patch Notes, Demo Version 0.01

Hello!

Thank you for playing the first version of the demo! Since then, we have received some feedback on the discussion forum of our game, and made fixes according to the comments.

[h3]New Content:[/h3]
  • Added manual reloading. You can now reload with the "R" key.
  • User interface is updated and shows the current ammo left in the magazine for the pistol and SMG.
  • An epilepsy warning is added in the beginning of the game.
  • First implementation of the controller support. Tested with a DualShock 4, hopefully it works well with the Xbox controller.

  • The movement has been vastly improved.
  • SMG damage is boosted and the pistol's damage was balanced.
  • Maximum ammo count is increased and ammo pickups give you more ammo now,
  • Some textures in the levels are modified.
  • Visuals of the grenade explosions have changed.

  • Enemies getting stuck in the ground.
  • Some explosions having a great blast radius.
  • Animation glitches on weapons.
