Development Diary #7

Hi, all of you not afraid of ghosts lurking all around!

Many natural phenomena demand respect from us, puny humans. One of them is for sure electricity. Of course, when you are a frequent visitor of the haunted locations, you are pretty much used to one or two jumpscare lightning striking seemingly just to unnerve you. But electricity is a crucial power behind our habitats and all the comforts we surround ourselves with!

Of course, when the paranormal is involved, comforts quickly change into discomforts. That is why you have to have a firm grasp of the house's electric installation!
Things get electric!
Recently, we have implemented a whole new system to the demo, which is centered around (frankly quite realistic-looking) fusebox. You can remove every fuse manually - and that's a clue here! Because sometimes, you'll have only enough fuses to light up one room, for example. To bring the much-needed light to a different one, you will have to swap the fuses and make the previous room dark. And so on. But beware - if you leave a room unlit, mysterious forces may start to manifest there and hinder your efforts to renovate the house.

Of course, further in the game, you may have solutions to skip some of the handiwork but prepare for puzzles that make you discover which configuration of fuses is the one you need at the moment. And prepare for some wild electric dischargest if you get the configuration wrong!

Of course, nothing in the haunted house is safe from ghosts, so it may happen in the game that even the fusebox will serve as a hideout for some rogue spirit. You may not be too happy when you come to tinker with the fuses!

Please remember that those mechanics may be subject to change, as we are still making plans on how to electrocute you a bit with our ideas!

Development Diary #6

Hi, enthusiasts of old house revitalization with a dose of paranormal!

We are deep into preparing the demo for the game. We want to give you hands-on experience with the best and the most polished gameplay possible. That's why we have decided to not rush things to make it for the current Steam Next. Needless to say, one of the key components of the game for us is physics.

Nevertheless, we are facing ghosts in the game. Hauntings often laugh in the face of physics. Bending our reality will be one of the things our paranormal opponents will try to use to distract you. Be prepared to face situations when you enter the room eager for some quick cleanup... and you see that furniture isn't quite fond of standing on the ground.
Where did the gravity go?
Of course, lack of gravity means options - especially when you have telekinesis as of your main tools. We are currently experimenting with the possibility of switching gravity on and off by players, which gives a lot of new uses to the lack of this elemental force of nature.

Please remember that those assets may be subject to change, as we are still working on how to use and present physics in the best way possible.

Development Diary #5

Hi, prospective ghost hunters!

Our work on the Haunted House Renovator demo, which will debut in June during Steam Next Fest, is going at wild speeds, but we wanted to show you one of the important equipment pieces we have just implemented in-game. It will be essential for many puzzles and haunting eradications you will have to perform, so it's a great thing to sneak peek!
UV upgrade for the flashlight
A good torch is a must-have tool for any renovator of supernaturally-infested houses. There may be no lights functioning in some rooms, or even in the whole building. Sometimes you will also need to have a look into a big hole in the wall or a similarly narrow, unlit space. But - what's most important in this line of work - lots of ghosts like the dark and will be more than eager to shut off the lights on you. Mere electrician chops will not be enough for those paranormal blackouts.

There is more to the light-based modus operandi of a ghost house renovator. Not everything is visible in normal wavelengths. Secret glyphs, writings on the walls, and other types of hidden clues may be hiding just next to you. That's why in Haunted House Renovator you can use an additional upgrade to the flashlights which works when lights are down. Enter UV torch.

With UV light, no hidden message will hide from you for long. But that's not all. Remember those ghosts that like to mess with the light switches? They like to lurk invisible in the dark as well. Use the UV light and you may reveal a pesky spirit, probably very angry that you foiled its plans. Hey, it's what you doing, no need for those hauntings to be grumpy about it!

Please remember that those assets may be subject to change, as we are still tinkering with our tools to make their use the most intuitive for you.

Development Diary #4

As the development of the Haunted House Renovator gets more intense, the more spooky our first environment gets. Have you seen something moving there? Of course, you did! This is a haunted place. We have noticed the signs of more serious paranormal activity... which we will probably leave for you to take care of!
Spooky happenings spotted
The authentic knight armor seemed to be just an expensive decoration placed to give an extra touch to the aura of the apartment, but we have noticed recently that it got... quite lively. Does it try to communicate something? Well, you may remember this helpless metal figure from our trailer. We'd bet that it would be happy to see his helmet back where the head should be. A scavenger hunt for the missing piece is in order. Such environmental puzzles may not be as obvious as our friend straight from the Middle Ages, but you should keep your eyes peeled. There will be always some hints when you have to engage in the puzzle.

We wanted to check if this fine cello is well-tuned, but it seems to escape our grasp. Both in the literal and brain-processing sense. When you investigate the haunted location, such items can be just the part of the ambiance generated by ghosts you are supposed to fight... but way more often indicate that there's something more to it. By following the hint and finding a way to "calm down" or maybe interact with the possessed object - those interactions will be very different depending on its type, you may as well pass a part of the overreaching puzzle, which will be essential to clean the house from some more advanced hauntings. Curiosity may be a cat killer, but for you is as important as your tools and skills.

Please remember that those assets may be subject to change, as we are working intensely and relentlessly to populate the starting apartment with all kinds of out-of-this-world encounters.

Development Diary #3

When you create a game about haunted houses, you need the ghastly cast of spirits to populate them - that's pretty obvious. So we're hard at work designing the ghost that stands out from the crowd. Today, we wanted to show off some of the denizens of old manors that will rather often stand in your way of making such housing liveable again (or at least liveable for those locators that are still alive!).
Creating the things that go bump in the night
In Haunted House Renovator, there are several categories of ghostly beings, which are defined by some behavior patterns specific to them and the way the player interacts with them. At the same time, each spirit in the given category is very different and you have to adjust your strategy accordingly if you wanna get rid of them.

One of those categories is runners (working "title", may change😉) - creatures operating on a smaller scale than cinematic, Hollywood-like haunting, but also more common and mischievous in their way. They vary in shape and size, and can also be corporeal or incorporeal entities. Some are relatively non-harmful, but others can make your life harder by making a pretty serious mess in the rooms they haunt - and slowing your renovation efforts by doing so.

What runners all certainly do is... run away from the player, as might've been expected. Those guys are not up to confrontation! But they also try to hide their treasures and by finding them you can earn some extra money/resources. Although in some cases you may need to catch them first! There are several methods of doing so - you can for example use a special net, or set traps... but we will write more about ghostbusting in a future devlog!

As you may see, they come in many different shapes and sizes and, we hope, are very unique in their look. And that's only one category of otherworldly adversaries you will have to face in Haunted House Renovator! Of course, remember that all the images here are concept art and are susceptible to change. Stay tuned for more sneak peeks.
We want to give you psychic powers!
At least in the game (although if we accidentally find a way to do it in real life, we'll update you😁)! As you might have seen from a snippet on the game's Facebook, we are working on the telekinesis mechanic for Haunted House Renovator. We do a lot of tests, and while it's of course an early iteration of the game and system, we tinker with parameters like gravity to figure out what will be the most fun to use for players. After all, where can you hope to entertain yourself by moving things with your mind if not in games?
