About
Tsuchigumo or 'ground spider' in translation, are monstrous giant spider yōkai. You will find these yōkai deep within forests or mountains waiting to ambush passing travellers. They make their habitat from woven silk web from within which the Tsuchigumo will use illusions and trickery to lure it's prey - you won't know what has hit you until it is too late to escape!
Folklore
There are many legends and folklore tales surrounding the Tsuchigumo yōkai, but almost all include the various illusions that lured their victims.
There are accounts of the famed warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu of the Heian era being poisoned by a Tsuchigumo disguised as a servant boy, or in some retellings captured by a disguised monk offering aid during a bout of illness.
This wouldn't be the last time the warrior Yorimitsu would encounter this yōkai either, for later it is said that a Tsuchigumo in the shape of a woman general, marched a yōkai army to fight Yorimitsu and his men. He was not fooled however, and attacked the general first resulting in the army disappearing and another victory over the tricky Tsuchigumo!

Armed with this new knowledge be careful as you explore the labyrinths, conscripts! The terrifying Tsuchigumo are lying in wait for you somewhere...so be on guard and protect your fellow teammates as you sanctify the land!
