San Pelícano Stories [9/10] | Some of us are gambling with life and death

Greetings everyone,

Alcohol may make you happy, but it has a hidden side that's a lot less enjoyable. Welcome in our new (fictional) testimony!
Story #9: Student who suffered an alcohol-induced coma
"I never thought about death before.

I’m a student, so I go out partying with my friends, just enjoying life! However, therein lies a paradox, since every night, some of us, including me, are gambling with life and therefore also death.

Now I realize that there are two sides to alcohol. The first is the one we all know, the good friend, always game, relaxing, and comforting. It gives you the courage to socialize and try things that you’d never have the guts to do. But recently I also got to know its other side, a much less attractive one.

Because it makes you suffer in return gives you headaches and makes you sick. It can even wipe your memory, make you hella sad, or even violent. While it’s fun in the beginning, over time it damages your body as well as your social relationships, in some cases. That’s not what friends do.

I fell into the trap, of accepting that dark friend into my circle of trust could have killed me. They told me that the ambulance got there very quickly despite the heavy Friday night traffic. Thanks to that, and the paramedics’ actions and words, they managed to bring me back to my real friends, the ones who had called for help."

New simulation game Ambulance Life is a fascinating race against time

Of all the many new PC games I saw at Gamescom 2024, Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator is among those that surprised me most. Following on from developer Aesir Interactive's Police Simulator, the upcoming simulation game shifts across to another essential emergency service - the rapid response life of an ambulance paramedic. You're in charge of answering calls, diagnosing the situation, providing initial treatment, and making sure to get the patient back to hospital in time to give them the best chance of survival, and it's a remarkably compelling experience, especially as the stakes rack up.

San Pelícano Stories [8/10] | Life has a funny way of making choices for you

Greetings everyone,

Unhoused living is never a choice. You have to deal with things you sometimes can't control. Welcome in our new (fictional) testimony!
Story #8: Homeless man who suffered hypothermia
"When I was a kid I used to play with a miniature ambulance. I took it everywhere with me and dreamt up stories where I rescued people who needed help. Life had different plans for me and now I live away from civilized society.

Unhoused living is never a choice, but life has a funny way of making choices for you. Sure, I get by day by day finding just enough to eat and a shelter to sleep at night. Under these conditions, the law of the city isn’t so different from the law of the jungle!

In the course of my travels, I’ve managed to gather enough gear to be able to sleep outdoors without too many worries. But, you know they say, “When it rains, it pours". It was just after I lost my bag, and everything in it when the weather unleashed its worst. I couldn’t say what temperature it was outside, but I’ve rarely felt as cold. The rain, combined with the raging wind, meant that the few free shelters were useless. There are people whose job it is to make the rounds to check whether people in my situation have the basics to survive. Fortunately for me, they found me and called an ambulance.

I had stopped shivering, which as I understand it is a sign of advanced hypothermia. In the end, the ambulance took me to hospital. It looked just like the toy that I had lost long ago, and on the way, I found it funny to imagine that it had now come back for me."

San Pelícano Stories [7/10] | After a while, you stop paying attention

Greetings everyone,

The danger always comes when you're not paying attention. Welcome in our new (fictional) testimony!
Story #7: Worker who suffered a fall
"I know that dreaming about falling is fairly common. You fall from the top of a ravine, a tall building, or into a hole. Personally, I get that sort of dream very often, and it’s always from the top of a ravine. I’d say it happens at least once a week. Yet I don’t have vertigo!

That would be a hindrance for somebody who constantly works up in the air. As with many high-risk professions, safety plays an even greater role. It is based largely on the quality of the equipment, and that’s why it gets checked all the time. That’s part of the procedure, and after a while, you stop paying attention to it. That’s when the real danger comes, when you switch to reflex or muscle memory mode. When you work on the same wall, in the same basket and you use the same equipment every day, you see things without really looking at them.

Lucky for me I wasn’t very high up, but I thought it was all over. When I hit the ground, I couldn’t get up, I felt completely numb, as if I was in a waking nightmare. They diagnosed me with multiple fractures, lots of internal and external bruising I’ll spare you the details. My helmet saved my life, they tell me. The paramedics very quickly realized that I had internal bleeding. Thanks to their work on the scene and on the way to the hospital, I lived to tell you this story today."
