7 Pro Tips for Winning Firefights in HAWKED

Tired of losing gunfights against other Renegades? These seven pro tips will ensure you stand a better chance against your enemies next time you find yourself in a duel.

Knowing how to shoot is a fundamental skill for a treasure hunter. Here’s how you can hone your technique and become the fastest gun on X-Isle.
1. Familiarize Yourself with the Arsenal
You’ll find all manner of unique weapons on X-Isle. Many of them are the traditional bang-bang rifles, pistols, and shotguns, but there are also plenty of laser guns and other wild spins on the weapons you know and love.

When you pick up a weapon and don’t know how it works, you won’t use it to its fullest potential. This is especially true when it comes to controlling recoil and spread. Without understanding what each weapon excels at and how to fire it accurately, you may as well be shooting finger guns and shouting “pew-pew”.

Do yourself a favor and visit the Shooting Range on the Riftwake. It has all the weapons in GRAIL’s arsenal which you can pick up and fire to your heart’s content (but don’t even think about stashing any of it when you leave).

Get familiar with every weapon and their unique firing patterns, recoil, and spread so that you know all of them like the back of your hoverboard.
2. Use the Environment
It’s important to remember that Renegades are not the only violent lot out there. The island is full of bloodthirsty lizard monsters and very, very angry VEKTR agents just yearning to fight, well, anything.

If you’ve engaged an enemy that’s particularly close to a group of Disciples or VEKTR cronies, try to aggro them to fight your enemy. Even a single shot will do. Rival Renegades will be distracted with Disciples or VEKTR agents while you close in to deliver the finishing blow.

Besides enemy mobs, there are also tons of deadly traps you can set off, like spinning blades, spikes, and flowers that can set your enemies ablaze. And who could forget exploding barrels? X-Isle is a very dangerous place, so make sure your enemies remember that.
3. Don’t Rush
Even if you’ve broken your opponent’s shield and lowered their health significantly, it’s never a good idea to rush in blindly to finish them off. Just because they’re low on health doesn’t mean they can’t still take you down. Also, their teammates could be hiding nearby and will attack the second you approach them.

Don’t hastily rush into situations just because you think the firefight is in your favor. Take a second to assess the situation and only then move in to finish off your enemy. This way you’ll keep unpleasant surprises few and far in between.

Pro Tip: If you have the Recon Raptor Gear equipped, use it to scout the area ahead of you before closing in on your target, but remember that its range is limited and it may not spot enemies hidden farther away.
4. Don’t Forget Your Gear
In the heat of the moment, as adrenaline rushes through your brain and your finger is clamped tightly on the trigger, it’s easy to forget that you have Gear equipped. Exo and Ward Gear can significantly tip the scales in your favor during firefights when used correctly and at the right time.

Whether it’s supporting you with health restoration, or dealing some extra damage to your opponents, Exo and Ward Gear should not be ignored. Initiate firefights with the Infernat Lantern Exo Gear to stagger enemies with some fire damage before engaging with your guns. Or use the Familiar’s Boon Ward Gear for some added protection for you and your teammates.

Plan out what Gear to equip with your teammates and you should be ready for any firefight that you come across during your treasure-hunting escapades.
5. Avoid Tunnel Vision
Focus is very important during gunfights, as you don’t want to be distracted when engaging other Renegades. There is such a thing as “too much focus”, however, which can lead to “tunnel vision” or a lack of awareness of your surroundings.

Tunnel vision can easily cost you the game. While you engage one enemy, their pal will flank you from a different angle and take you down before you even notice them. This is why it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings even while you’re shooting or being shot at.

Pro Tip: When taking cover to reload your weapon, make it a habit to spin the camera around and scan your surroundings, as this could help you catch a flanking maneuver before it’s executed.

Your teammates will be especially important in this case. While you engage an enemy, you can ask them to cover your flanks so that no one can sneak up from other angles. Never let your guard down and always be aware of everything that goes on around you.
6. Effective Weapon Combinations
There’s an old saying that goes: “One shotgun is great, but two is one too many.” We don’t know who said it, but they made a very good point. When equipping guns, you should consider how they complement the other weapons in your arsenal.

A shotgun is great at close range and in buildings, but not in open terrain. A sniper rifle, on the other hand, is deadly from afar, but almost useless up close.

Since these two weapons fill two polar opposite roles, they make for a very effective combination. The sniper will pick off targets from afar, whereas the shotgun will take care of any bad guys that get too close. Now imagine carrying two snipers. Sure, you’re probably a beast from afar, but once someone gets too close, you’re defenseless. Meanwhile, if you’re carrying two shotguns, you have no choice but to always run towards your target, since you have no way of dealing damage at long distances.

Don’t just pick up any weapon you find. Think about how it complements the other weapons you have equipped and what missing roles it can fill in your arsenal.
7. Time Your Reloads
Impulsive reloading is something that happens to many Renegades. The urge to keep your weapon fully loaded is a good habit. Unfortunately, reloading at the wrong time could leave you vulnerable and defenseless, costing you the gunfight.

When the magazine is empty or close to running out, switch to your next weapon if you’re still engaging the enemy. Ideally, you should find some solid cover to reload behind. This keeps you safe from enemy fire while the reload animation plays out. It’s good to have full magazines, but not at the cost of taking damage while reloading.
Bonus Tip: Always Try Something New
As mentioned above, the arsenal in HAWKED is packed with tons of unique weapons, and trying them all out is a blast. Don’t be afraid of using unfamiliar guns since you may end up finding something completely new that suits your playstyle.

Experiment with new guns to find the ones that play to your strengths. You’ll be wiping the floor with rival Renegades in no time.

Bounty: Extract Trinkets for Renegade Pass Levels

[Incoming Transmission: Tabytha Rasa] This summer heat is relentless... but I hope you're still keeping your eyes on the prize, Renegades. Let's warm up, figuratively speaking, by bringing in some Trinkets!
 • Objective (Challenging): 130,000 Trinkets Extracted
 • Community Reward: +5 Renegade Pass Levels
 • Golden Bounty (Top Renegade): Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 OR DualSense Edge™
 • Golden Bounty (1 Random Renegade): Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 OR DualSense Edge™
 • Time Limit: August 9, 2024, 16:00 CEST – August 16, 2024, 16:00 CEST

IMPORTANT: Click “PARTICIPATE NOW” on our Bounties hub to make yourself eligible for the community reward from this Bounty and for your chance to win a Golden Bounty.

We need Trinkets and a lot of them. Nothing extraordinary about this bounty; let’s just get some extra cash in GRAIL’s budget. It's better than letting VEKTR get a hold of the Trinkets or the Disciples keep them hidden for centuries.

Extract 130,000 Trinkets this week and GRAIL will promote everyone with +5 Renegade Pass Levels, granting you all that sweet, sweet loot. The Renegade with exceptional performance, and, as always, one randomly chosen treasure hunter, will also receive their choice of either Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 OR DualSense Edge™.

Succeed in extracting the Trinkets and GRAIL will reward you accordingly. If you don’t extract the Trinkets in time, they may end up being sold on the black market and be forever lost. Good hunting!

*The Terms & Conditions for this Golden Bounty can be found here.

What are Bounties?

Bounties are a new weekly challenge system in HAWKED. Keep an eye on the official website and social channels to take on the latest Bounty, then play HAWKED, work together as a community, and smash the objective within the time limit to get an exclusive reward.

If the objective is reached, Bounties will be awarded to all Renegades who fulfill the following criteria:
 • Clicked “PARTICIPATE NOW” on the Bounties hub.
 • Logged in and played at least one match in HAWKED during the Bounty period.

Bounties vary by difficulty. While one Bounty might be a breeze, certain Bounties need an extra push to nail the objective.

Special Golden Bounties, including physical and real-world prizes, may also be awarded to top bounty hunters and random Renegades, so check back often for opportunities to win big prizes.

Dev Diary: Changing Horizons & PvE Plans

Hey, Renegades! Unbelievably, it’s been six months since we launched HAWKED globally on PC and consoles. In that time, so many of you have spent time on our wonderful submarine hub, the Riftwake, and the mysterious, treasure-filled world of X-Isle.

Your response and support has been wonderful. Getting to play alongside you, listen to, and act upon your feedback and requests has been our pleasure.

Admittedly, not all is well in HAWKED. After the initial surge of success and a large player count, Renegades have drifted in and out of the game. As a result, we haven’t managed to reach the minimum player base required to constantly fill 30-player sessions 24/7. You’re also probably well aware of the matchmaking issues I spoke about in the last Dev Diary

But fear not: we have a plan! The future of HAWKED may look a little different from what we originally envisioned, but the horizon remains bright and full of loot.
MATCHMAKING CHALLENGES
The battle to achieve great matchmaking comes down to three factors, which are constantly being monitored and balanced by developers:
 • Opposition Quality
 • Ping
 • Matchmaking Speed

We look at and adapt our matchmaking in three stages:
 1. Starting with an initial set of players, we allow them all to join matches together. This makes matchmaking fast, while the opposition quality and ping are poorly optimized. This is because we put everyone together, regardless of skill level or experience. If we merge different regions together, this increases ping and makes the game feel laggy.
 2. As we get more players, we can add skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) and ensure that regions are split. However, at this point, you might need to wait longer to get into a game to suit either of those requirements. In this case, players in different regions might be merged into the same queues more quickly in matchmaking.
 3. Finally, if we get so many players that we have enough variety in skill and experience across all supported matchmaking regions, this means we can have full 30-player matches with low ping and players on a similar skill level.

Unfortunately, we have not successfully reached the third level of matchmaking, and we have only reached the second level of matchmaking occasionally.

The impact of this is very clear: players who don’t get a satisfying matchmaking experience will not hang around for very long.
A NEW DIRECTION
And so, we had an interesting choice to make. It’s clear that HAWKED is an interesting and exciting game for many players, not least for the team working on it. We are still welcoming a lot of brand-new Renegades to X-Isle’s shores every day, and we can see from our data that we’re doing things right for the most part. Our new player surveys show high scores in the metrics we are hoping for. Overall, we are rated highly on PlayStation, easily above average on Xbox, and just above average on PC (with many of the more negative reviews stemming from technical issues at launch, which were solved soon after). The message from you has been clear: this game has potential

We are now working on a new PVE mode for HAWKED. It will remain free to play like the core HAWKED experience, but we will look at adding some more monetization options for you to play around with too. PvP modes will, of course, stay in HAWKED. But our focus will be changed in the short term to delivering a PvE experience rather than adding much more to PvP.

Throughout the rest of the summer, we need all of our developers working on this. What this means for you as a player is that HAWKED will still be here in all its current glory. Weekly Bounties and prizes will still be up for grabs, new Shop rotations will come every Thursday, competitive Renegades can get stuck into Contracts and Ranked Mode, and we’ll bring Wonder Rush back. What you won’t see is our regular patch cycle (we will skip the next two at least). There will be no patch this week nor in two weeks. Instead, later in August, we’ll launch another Dev Diary that delves deep into the rollout plan for our PvE content.

We apologize in advance for this break in routine, but we wanted to keep you up to date with what is happening in the most transparent way possible. If you have any questions about this, check in with the PvE tag on our Feedback Forum on Discord, or just ask on your favorite social media platform. We are sure that you will want to know things we haven’t covered here, and at the very least, we’ll prepare answers in time for the next Dev Diary.

Thanks for your patience and your fierce support, Renegades! See you on X-Isle.
