DevBlog #16 - Of Axes, Orcs, and Carnage: Meet Kalen, the Slayer

Ah, greetings, brave adventurers!

Today, I bring tidings of blood, steel, and a hero forged in the crucible of chaos. Allow me to introduce you to Darfall’s second class - the indomitable Slayer. You shall take up arms as Kalen, a warrior of unparalleled ferocity hailing from the fabled Watermeuse Fort.

But don’t be fooled by his rugged demeanor; Kalen is as much a strategist as he is a force of nature. Let me regale you with tales of his abilities, his storied past, and the unique gifts that make him the bane of orcs and monsters alike. Prepare yourselves for pure, unadulterated carnage!
Abilities Wrought from Battle
Kalen’s arsenal is a symphony of destruction, each ability designed to leave foes trembling in awe - or simply cleaved in two. Let us explore these feats of might:
Rending Throw
Lo, before the clash even begins, Kalen takes the first strike! Hurling his mighty axe to a distant point, he rends his enemies, causing them to bleed, while those near the impact are left stunned, wondering what hit them.
A word of advice: always keep an eye on flying axes.
Charge
When subtlety fails (and with Kalen, it often does), why not charge headlong into the fray? With an impact that stuns the first foe in his path, Kalen ensures that even the most stalwart of enemies feel the weight of his fury.
Not for the faint of heart - but perfect for breaking the lines!
Cleave
Should your enemies dare to close in, Kalen’s axe is ready to meet them. With a sweeping strike as powerful as it is precise, he turns clusters of orcs into lamb chops.
Messy, you say? Gloriously so.
Break Armor
Ah, the bane of knights and monstrous beasts alike! Kalen’s expertise lies in shattering defenses. With a single devastating strike, he removes his target’s armor entirely, rendering them vulnerable to your forces’ wrath.
Even the toughest foes cannot withstand the might of the Slayer.
Power Strike
For those moments when a single target must fall - be it an Elite or a towering Boss - Kalen unleashes the Power Strike. Chain it with Break Armor, and even the most formidable enemies will melt before your eyes.
Truly, the stuff of legends.
Bloodthirst
Should the battle press on and Kalen find himself surrounded, fear not! With each hit he lands, Kalen heals himself, ensuring he can fight on until the battlefield is his alone.
An unrelenting force, unstoppable and unbroken.
Special Trait: Battle Standard
As if his abilities weren’t enough, Kalen inspires those around him with his Battle Standard, increasing the attack speed of all nearby melee units by 10%.
Lead the charge, and watch your allies rise to greatness.
The Lore of Kalen: A Slayer Forged in Fire
Where hardship reigns, heroes rise.” So goes the creed of the Baneforged, the elite warriors of Watermeuse Fort. Kalen’s story begins in the shadow of orcish raids, forcing his family into a life of constant peril. It was at Watermeuse Fort where his fate changed, avoiding imprisonment by embracing the grueling trials of the Baneforged.

Earning his place among their ranks, Kalen slew a drake in the Deadlands, marking him as a true warrior. Ever since, his axe has carved a path of glory and vengeance, defending the realms from monstrous threats and orcish hordes.
The Baneforged:
Forged in hardship and honed in peril, the Baneforged are warriors of legend. Summoned to face the most dire of threats, they are as infamous for their bravery as they are for their origin - many are criminals, choosing this path over death or imprisonment.

DevBlog #15 - Of Perks, Heroes, and Inspiring Tales

Ah, gather close, brave adventurers! Today, I bring you tales of opportunity and inspiration - of how your heroes shall grow into legends through the wonders of perks, and how their mere presence can light a fire in the hearts of their loyal subjects. Let us venture forth into these chronicles of customization and leadership!

Meet the Champions: Heroes of Legend

Lo and behold, the heroes of Darfall, each ready to lend their might and wisdom to your cause. But consider this merely a glimpse into the tales of these champions - rest assured, more of their legends shall be revealed in due time!
Kalen, the Slayer
Kalen is a force of nature, excelling in close combat with abilities that turn the tide of any skirmish. His Cleave ability strikes multiple foes in a wide arc, making it perfect for dealing with clustered enemies. Meanwhile, Bloodthirst heals Kalen for a portion of the damage he deals, allowing him to stay in the thick of the fight longer than most.
Ardan, the Mage
Ardan wields elemental magic to devastating effect, excelling at controlling the battlefield and eliminating groups of enemies. His Inferno spell unleashes waves of fire, burning through hordes of foes with ease. On the other hand, Freezing Nova creates a blast of cold that slows and damages enemies, providing an excellent tool for crowd control.
Nariel, the Beastmaster:
Nariel combines long-range precision with the support of nature’s fiercest companions. Her traps and poison abilities create zones of danger that weaken or eliminate enemies over time, while her animal allies, such as Direwolves and Bears, can engage enemies directly, providing both offense and distraction.
The Perk System: A Tapestry of Power
Customization, dear friends, is the lifeblood of Darfall. Our perk system is no ordinary list of enhancements - it is a tapestry where your choices forge the destiny of your heroes:

Bolster Strength or Resolve: Whether by increasing health or sharpening their blades for greater damage, your heroes can rise to new heights of prowess.

Harness Ingenious Abilities: Imagine mining resources with ease or doubling your loot - immense reaches are within your grasp!

Tailor Your Strategy: Carefully assign points to create heroes who match your playstyle, whether offensive or defensive.
How to Earn Perk Points
Ah, the paths to power are many and varied:

 • Through Valor and Triumph: Each level your hero attains grants a precious perk point.
 • Through Ancient Tomes: Seek the fabled Books of Knowledge, rare treasures dropped by elite foes or carefully crafted at the Library with mana orbs.

Like the branches of a mystical tree, this system encourages exploration and rewards curiosity. And mark my words - this is just the beginning. The tree will grow, adding new boughs of progression and mechanics for the bold to conquer.

Unique Perks: The Spice of Heroism

Each hero class bears a unique gift, a perk that sets them apart and adds a dash of intrigue to their role in your grand saga:

Nariel, the Beastmaster: Can unlock common treasure chests scattered across the wilderness without needing a key. Why bother with keys when nature herself provides?

Kalen, the Slayer: Starts with the Iron Mining perk, allowing you to gather iron from the very start, even before outposts are built. Truly a blacksmith’s dream come true!

Ardan, the Mage: Ah, a mystery still brewing in the arcane cauldron - stay tuned, for his unique gift shall soon be revealed!

These perks are more than abilities; they are invitations to experiment and discover new ways to shape your adventure.

Inspiring Workers: The Aura of Leadership

A hero’s duty does not end on the battlefield. When they walk among the workers of your realm, their presence alone inspires greatness. Imagine this: your hero stands near, and suddenly the workers redouble their efforts, spurred on by the glow of their leadership.

Should you see a green arrow hovering above your workers, know that it is your hero’s aura urging them onward. Use this power wisely - whether bolstering your economy during times of peace or preparing for the coming storm of undead invaders.

And so, dear adventurer, until we meet again, may your perks shine brightly, your heroes inspire endlessly, and your kingdom thrive under your watchful command!

0.10 Content Update Available Now! (Demo)

Greetings, Darfall Players!

We’re excited to announce that the latest content update, 0.10, is now live!

This update brings a host of improvements and new features as we continue working towards the full release. Let’s dive into the highlights of what’s new in this demo update.
Window Bar Rework
The bottom bar has been redesigned to highlight the Storage and Codex buttons, previously located near "Repair All." This new layout not only makes these buttons easier to access but also paves the way for future additions, such as a potential Hero Crafting button in later updates.

With all window buttons now grouped in one place, navigating your interface has never been easier. This redesign also leaves room for future expansions.
Ability & Perk Book UI Upgrade
The Ability and Perk Book windows have received a visual and functional rework. With updated art, your character now stands at the center of the Perk Tree, enhancing the feeling of progression and customization.

Switching between Perks and Abilities is now seamless, thanks to a clear toggle and a "new point" indicator that ensures you never miss an opportunity to upgrade.
Survival End Screen Improvements
The updated Survival End Screen now provides detailed information about your score, including a breakdown of the difficulty multiplier and a new section for Objectives.

Destroying portals now properly reflects in your score, rewarding your efforts with a significant bonus.
Mod.io Integration!
For content creators and players seeking new scenarios, we’re excited to announce mod.io integration! This platform allows you to browse, subscribe, and play custom scenarios directly in-game.

Darfall on mod.io: https://mod.io/g/darfall

Uploading your scenarios is as straightforward as using the Steam Workshop, and mod.io ensures that players can easily explore community creations.
Scenario Editor Improvements
We’ve made several enhancements to the Scenario Editor, making it easier than ever to create your custom maps:
Custom Items with Icons
You can now create custom items, assign names, and upload unique icons. Want a specific quest item to drop from Giant Rats? You can now make it happen!

Custom items can be found in the Data Editor window on the second tab.

In the future, we also plan to add a way to modify any stat of an item, like Hitpoints or Damage, and to change existing items, like how much the Plank costs to craft.
Pathing Grid
We have also added an option to display cells blocked by props or structures, helping you visualize AI navigation and player-building restrictions.
Doodad Improvements
Doodads serve as visual environment improvements and are designed to be non-interactable by the player in any way. However, we have added the ability to allow doodads to block pathing.

This helps immensely when placing doodads like custom mountains or pillars, which previously allowed players to walk straight through them.
Full Update Notes
These are just the highlights of what’s included in 0.10. For the complete list of fixes, improvements, and updates, check out the full changelist below:
