November 1st, 2024 Patch Notes

Another big update for Yomi 2; we’ve added the final four venues to the Career Mode, so you can finish your journey of becoming the greatest Yomi player in the city!

November 1st, 2024 PATCH NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------
New Content

—The last four career locations are now available, along with their related quests, tournaments, and wacky rulesets in the Event Hall:

Iron Claw Club, along with the Event Hall rulesets Knockdown Brutality, Yagami's Exhibition, and Dark Tryst

Drummond Towers, along with the Event Hall ruleset Money Match

Yomi World East, along with the Event Hall ruleset Yomi Counter Challenge

Yomi World West, along with the Event Hall ruleset Gem Bonanza

—Added sounds for Menelker and Dragon Midori's moves.

Balance Changes

—Gloria's Flash Heal (Z) damage 9 -> 6.

Improvements

—New "Versus screen", shown right before matches (for a few seconds) in single match vs CPU, in career mode, and in live online games. It also appears when we restore a career game that's in the middle of a match, to remind you of what you were doing. (You can press a button to dismiss it faster if you want.)

—During the second step of power up, the pair that's on the table is no longer considered to be known-hand-cards, for purposes of the known-hand-cards display.

(For instance, while the opponent is powering up a pair of throws, you could still see those throws in the opponent's known-hand-cards, even though they were no longer in the opponent's hand, which could be confusing.)

—In the career tournament bracket screen, you can now hold any button to speed up the bracket animations.

—In the career tournament bracket screen, you can now pan around the larger brackets with the gamepad's right stick or by dragging the brackets around with the mouse.

—Career: You can now "like" and "repost" the feed messages by clicking on the relevant icons or by pressing the Accept or Done buttons on gamepad. This lights up the related icon and adds one to the count.

(It doesn't have any other "real" effect, it's just for fun.)

—Career: When an incoming message makes you gain new fans, there is now a new animation where particles fly from that message to the fans counter, showing your number of fans grow "in real time" instead of instantly and silently.

—Clarified the Neutral Grounds quest "Perform 5 super moves" to "Perform 5 super moves (and see their animation)".

—Improved CPU performance of gameplay and AI code by about 44%. This should especially improve performance when playing against the AI, which can sometimes take a moment to choose its move.

—Merely mousing over the main phase's [Gem Storm] button will no longer hide your hand cards and show the gem storm card instead. Actually clicking the button will do that.

(This doesn't change gamepad/keyboard mode play, where focusing the [Gem Storm] button will still show the gem storm card. Only mouse mode is affected by this change.)

—The game now remembers your last character and gem selections for Single Match vs CPU, Combo Practice, and Pass and Play modes, instead of always defaulting to Red Grave and Blue Jaina. It also remembers your last chosen difficulty for Single Match vs CPU.

—The gem select screen now has a button help to let you know you can zoom the gem cards.

—Friend requests and challenges now stay on screen longer before disappearing (3s => 6s).

—Gem storm cards now say "Red * Storm" instead of "Red * Gem" at the top.

Bug Fixes

—Fixed River's Riposting Flourish (Hyper Finesse 5-dodge) incorrectly knocking down Quince's Dodge the Question (bottom side of Z, during Two Truths or Patriot Mirror).

—Fix: Coin will now correctly trigger its damage when it's spawned by a special block that hit the opponent during the Wild Night ruleset.

—Midori's Dragon Form super now always plays its super animation, even if it doesn't hit the opponent.

It also always counts for the career mode quest "Perform 5 super moves (and see their animation)".

—The Prismatic Shield card now explicitly mentions:

"(Rushdown characters can punish blocked unsafe moves with a full combo.)"

—Fixed crash when you select "Random gem" at the start of the fifth tutorial section.

—Fixed notifications from sending a friend match challenge not appearing at the correct time.

—Fix: You can now correctly mouse-click on friend alerts while you're in the Friends screen.

—Fixed especially long card tooltips (ex: Zane Y in Russian) overflowing the bottom of the screen.

—Fixed Russian player names not appearing correctly in-game.

—AI improvements.

Huge update for Yomi 2; FOUR new characters, two new languages, balance changes and bug fixes. Check it out below:

------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW CONTENT

Zane, the Blood Guard Anarchist is now available to play.

Gloria, the Hopeful Healer is now available to play.

Gwen, the Doomed Wanderer is now available to play.

Quince, the Flagstone Chief Magistrate is now available to play.

This means all 20 characters are now available to play! (Plus 2 more in the Renegades Expansion.)

—The game is now playable in German and Spanish.

(The Spanish "tweets" for career mode are still incomplete though, but we're working on it.)

Balance Changes

Setsuki:

—Bag of Tricks (Ability) has an additional effect:

"If you then have 4 or fewer cards, draw 4 cards."

Green gem:

—Crashing Rhino (Gem special move): "Armored." -> "Armored if you're not knocked down."

—Breath of the Wild (Gem storm):

Old: When you play a super, it costs no meter and instead GIVES you 1 meter.

New: Your supers are free. Gain 1 meter each turn that you DON'T play a super.

Black gem:

—Shadow Tentacles (gem storm) no longer triggers on block damage.

Troq:

—Giant Growth (ability) changed:

OLD:

If your high and low blocks are in your discard pile, then this gets:

Ongoing: Your moves do +3 damage each.

Discard this from play: When you take 10 or more damage in a turn.

NEW:

Ongoing: Your moves do +3 damage / +3 block damage.

Whenever you open with an attack, the opponent gets the edge.

Discard this from play: When you take 10 or more damage in a turn.

Onimaru:

—The E attack no longer gives the edge.

—During the green gem storm, the Martial Law super now only gets the level 2 or 3 effect if Onimaru actually had level 2 or 3, respectively (even though the super is free during green storm).

Bal-Bas-Beta:

—Junkshot (X) is now Can't Combo, rather than Starter.

—It no longer returns to BBB's hand if Keep Away prevented damage that turn.

Persephone:

—On Your Knees (Super 2) is now unsafe on block.

Improvements

—New sound and visual effect for healing life.

—New sound for triggering Persephone's Dominance (innate).

Bug Fixes

—During the green gem storm, Martial Law (Onimaru Super1) no longer incorrectly drains all meter when played after a dodge or as an unsafe-on-block punish.

—Healing Potion is no longer legal to play when you have no blocks in hand.

(Doing this would just discard Healing Potion for no benefit.)

—Lum's Bamboo now correctly gets discarded when either player is hit by something else than direct moves, like Bubble Shield or Firestorm.

—Acrobatics (Vendetta Y dodge) can no longer incorrectly be played when dodges are disabled by Rainbow Disc (Valerie Super 2).

—Intimidating Roar (Dragon Midori Ability) can no longer force a River stance card to the top of her deck. It also no longer voids River's known-hand-cards if used while she's in a stance. (Because stance cards are immune to getting discarded.)

—The known-hand-cards now correctly track the situation when Midori is the victim of Intimidating Roar (which temporarily wipes his known-hand-cards until he draws a card), then transforms to Dragon Form before drawing a card.

—Fixed main phase buttons overlapping when your character has a fifth main phase button (like Bal-Bas-Beta) in some languages.

—Fixed a possible AI hang during the AI's Mistress's Command.

—Fixed crash when Blue Gwen applies both Prohibition and a throw or Chains of Ice effect at the same time to skip the opponent's main phase.

—Fixed a bad layout for the big known-hand-cards when none of the hand cards are known (i.e. when they're all shown face down).

—Possible fix for the "ghost character" character select glitch, where the animated character in center screen displays with glitchy textures from the background image.

—Fix for friend match going into a bad flow (incorrectly showing the ruleset select screen) when you go into rematch character select, then press Back.

—If you played the game before we added the "Known Hand Cards" remappable button, we now map that button to its defaults (R3 on gamepad, Q on keyboard) rather than leave it unassigned.

—Fixed button configs not being saved correctly when using Steam Input.

—The game no longer shows a "Random" button help (that does nothing when clicked) in the gem reference screen.

—On MacOS, opening the Steam overlay (Shift-Tab) should now actually work.

—When either Master Volume or Effects Volume are set to 0, super videos now don't play any sound at all, instead of incorrectly playing some very quiet sound.

Text fixes:

—Updated several character stat cards that were out of date.

—Added some text explaining the definition of a "hit" to the third page of Quick Rules.

—River's stances now mentions that while in a stance, you can't interact with your regular hand cards.

—Fixed the career location screen's infopane about the tournament not correctly showing the location name.

—Fixed "~~Final Authority~~" briefly showing up when someone plays Final Authority.

—The gem select screen now correctly shows the blue burst's three lines of text

—The friends screen no longer occasionally drops some mouse input when displayed over the gameplay pause menu.

—The friends screen tabs now correctly get auto-placed and auto-sized according to the size of their localized text

—Gwen throws now show their ability text in a bottom secondary gray stripe, rather than in a generic white ability box.

------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW CONTENT

Vendetta, the Undead Assassin, is now available to play. Vendetta often does pokes of single hits or small combos, hiding behind the safety of his speed, Acrobatics, and Frost Web, while biding his time to land a super to close out the game.

Persephone, the Nox Oracle, is now available to play. Her ability to control the opponent can be brutal when she gets fully set up. She gets a big bonus from knocking down opponents and keeping them down.

New career location: Matrix Future Cube. (There are now four different venues to conquer in Career Mode.) In this futuristic mega casino, you'll find yourself in the middle of a turf war amongst various colorful AI characters. Try to finish the quests, unlock the venue's tournament, and win it in order to unlock the Hyperspace Portal tournament at the city's Event Hall.

New Event Hall tournament ruleset: Hyperspace Portal: All starters and enders are linkers.

Balance Changes

—Research and Development (Geiger ability) now allows you to Exchange cards one more time, on top of its existing ability.

—Changed Growth Surge (Green gem special):

OLD: This turn, your openers deal +8 damage on hit and your opponent's openers deal -8 damage on hit to a minimum of 1.
NEW: Fetch a super from your discard pile. This turn, your first hit deals +8 damage.

—Changed Breath of the Wild (Green gem storm):
OLD: Your supers don't cost meter to use.
NEW: When you play a super, it costs no meter and instead GIVES you 1 meter.

—Changed Inner Focus (white gem ability):
OLD: Choose one:
• Fetch a super card from your discard pile.
• Draw 2 cards.
NEW: Draw 2 cards, then discard a card.

—Changed Prismatic Shield (Diamond gem special):
OLD: When you block an attack, gain the edge.
NEW: When you block an attack, prevent block damage, gain the edge, ignore lockdown, and draw a card.

—Changed Healing Potion (orange gem ability):
OLD: Discard a block (and this card) to heal 7 life.
NEW: Discard a block (and this card) to heal 9 life.

—Changed War Stomp (orange gem special):
OLD: 4 damage
NEW: 5 damage

(Note: Green, blue, and black gems recently saw buffs which put them more in line with pick-rates of other gems, except the green gem still struggled to find a place on most characters. These changes are partly to increase the green gem's power level so it's closer to the rest, but also to adjust its role to be more clearly about gaining supers than the white gem. Meanwhile, the diamond gem's special block has been buffed to put its power level closer to that of the special moves of other gems, and the orange gem's Healing Potion ability is slightly buffed because it was hard to actually use the card at all given its high cost of requiring discarding a block.)

Improvements

—Added new card tooltips explaining the keywords Disabled and Item.

—The orange gem storm card now shows a tooltip for "Armored".

—Rainbow Disc (Valerie Super 2) now shows a tooltip for "Armored".

—Added a VSync option to the options screen. Especially useful for portable devices like the Steam Deck, as a way to reduce battery drain from an overly-high framerate while the game is running.

—When launching the game for the first time:

—The game now defaults to your computer's language, if we support it (for French, Russian, Chinese).

—It now has a language dropdown, so you can change language without going to the main menu.

—It also has some protection against accidentally button-mashing your way through it.

—Quality of life: When the round is effectively already over because one player has reached 0 life, the game:

—Doesn't ask for a card to fetch for Purple Burst, Phase Out, and similar cards

—Doesn't bother showing info badges for Lockdown or Unsafe on block

—Doesn't ask to choose which Tyrant Crusher effect to use

—Changed Keep Away (Bal-Bas-Beta ability) text for clarity:

OLD: Long range.

Prevent all combat damage you'd take (including block damage).

The opponent can't combo or pump.

NEW: Long range.

If you would get hit or take block damage, prevent that damage and the opponent can't play more cards this combat.

(Note: the wording consistently handles all cases the same way, so you don't have to worry exactly which type and timing of thing prevented block damage to know what is or isn't legal to play next. Regardless of whether the damage prevention triggered on an opener, or block damage from an unsafe move, or BBB triggering the red gem storm's damage just before openers are resolved, etc, etc, in all cases various kinds of followups from playing extra cards are disallowed, rather than some accidentally allowed and some disallowed.)

Bug Fixes

—The purple button to cancel your online matchmaking queue status is now correctly mouse-clickable in the character / gem select screen.

—Fix for the purple matchmaking box and the yellow spectating box: When you move the mouse while holding down the E key (by default), the little timer circle that shows how long you still need to hold it no longer disappears.

—When the game log shows a combat-reveal with a "hit" that was reduced to 0 dmg, because it was prevented by Keep Away, then it now says "DAMAGE PREVENTED" instead of "HIT" and "GOT HIT".

—Fixed a confusing lifebar animation during the combo playback when you take damage from abilities during combat (ex: Firestorm) as well as from combo cards.

—Fixed the Bare Your Soul UI showing the wrong player's gem icon when showing gem ability cards.

—Fixed that same UI (target card icons) overflowing the "(Gem) Ability" text from the icon in non-English languages.

—Fixed bad text "[cardname:-Î]" being shown in infobadges and logs when using items in the Wild Night ruleset.

—When Gimme a Jackpot (Lum ability) deals damage, the hit sounds will now be the same as for the Coin item, instead of incorrectly being those for the last combat card that Lum used.

—Fixed a UI crash when a game ends in a time-over draw game (when both players have equal life).

—Fixed Inner Focus (white gem ability) crash when it triggers a time out while drawing the final card of the deck.

—At the end of the turn, the game now always visually updates any card mods for cards in hand, instead of first waiting for the opponent's play sequence to end.

Ex: Attacks and throws showing as speed 10 for knockdown, or speed +3 for the edge.

—When you kill with a dodge into super, or an unsafe-on-block punish super, that super's video is no longer accidentally skipped.

—Geiger's Research & Development's effect icon tooltip no longer shows a broken text tag.

—The purple gem's Phase Out can once more correctly fetch a card when it dodges an attack and deals 0 damage (because of the opponent's Keep Away or Invisible).

Localization fixes, for things that previously always showed English text instead of the correct localized text:

—Career tournament brackets' player handles

—The Quick Rules p3 diagram (A > T, T > B/D, B/D > A)

—The career map markers

—The "Discard this from play" text from the cards Argagarg F and Bal-Bas-Beta F

—Several tutorial images

—Several popup messages from friend interactions

—Several default player names:

—"Player 1" and "Player 2" in Pass and Play

—The combo practice dummy's "Practice Dummy" name

—The generic "Yomibot" and "Yomibot (Hard)" names

—The default Career mode name "YomiChamp"

We’re always working on new features for Yomi 2, so hang out with us on Discord and stay up to date on further developments! Thanks for being a fan of our games.

Persephone and Vendetta emerge from the shadows!

Mistress Persephone, Nox Oracle and Vendetta, Undead Assassin are the next two characters to join the cast of Yomi 2! They’re both enigmatic fighters with questionable motives and shrouded pasts. Learn more about them in today’s blog post below:

Mistress Persephone is an enigmatic character who seemingly has her hand in many of the affairs of the realm. She granted DeGrey his seeming immortality and retrieved the Stormborne Family Sword from Onimaru to return it to its rightful owners. She twists, manipulates and respects the inner strength of friend and foe alike.

Persephone controls her opponents by restricting their actions and getting a huge bonus for knocking her opponents down. Her innate ability, Dominance, lets her recur cards from the discard pile when she scores a knockdown, and lets her get four cards when her Y Loyal Pets effect (a projectile “summon”) triggers on the same turn. She can even recur her supers with this to keep the oppression going.

Most uniquely, her super Mistress’s Command is kind of slow and only deals 1 damage, but it allows her to control her opponent’s combat card selection on the following turn. This allows her not only to fully see the opponent’s hand, but also force them to use their Super moves, Block the wrong direction or break apart Pairs to prevent them from powering up. She has generally low damage on a lot of her options, so this is just one of the ways that she can slowly grind you out over the course of a match.

Can you resist the Nox Oracle’s temptations long enough to secure a victory?

Vendetta is one of the more mysterious characters in the Fantasy Strike universe; on the surface, he’s an undead mercenary working with Zane (we’ll meet him later!) and the Blood Guard, but he secretly serves a dark master from the Dreadlands.

Gameplay-wise, he’s the premier “poking” character in the Yomi series. He has fast and varied normal attacks that can string to short combos, but they also draw him extra cards when he plays them and doesn’t get hit (when he outspeeds enemy Attacks, gets Blocked, or stabs into a Throw). Vendetta uses that card advantage to draw into his powerful special moves and gain fodder for powerups. He can also use his X Attack, Tumbling Strike, as a combo ender or Dodge follow-up to do 20 damage while discarding some of those excess cards.

His Y Dodge, Acrobatics, is perhaps his most iconic move; it avoids Attacks and Throws, and can even be used while knocked down!

You’ll need to work hard to pin down this cold and calculating killer.

One last thing! We’ve added the fourth location to the single player Career Mode, Matrix Future Cube. If you can fight through the ranks and win the tournament there, you’ll unlock another new wacky ruleset, Hyperspace Portal:

There’s lots more to come for our single player career mode; keep fighting to see if you can become the most powerful Yomi player in the city!

That’s all for now. Thanks so much for being a fan of our games. We hope to see you online or chatting with us about our games in our Discord channel. See you next time!
