The Deceit Team

Deceit 2 is Free to Play!

The time has arrived: Deceit 2 is now Free to Play on Steam!

We also have an update on the release of Deceit 2 on consoles: Deceit 2 will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on April 3rd!

With April 3rd being the full launch on all platforms for Deceit 2, we are eager to hear your feedback in this Pre-Season One test period on Steam.

Everyone who purchased the game before the F2P switch was flicked will receive our first DLC - the Werewolf Pack for free, along with 1,100 Shillings!
Wurgen & the Werewolf
Our second map, Wurgen, is now available to explore in game. Along with this, our first DLC, the Werewolf Pack is available to purchase and with it you’ll get:
  • Our second Terror, the Wyrtorn
  • Our second Curse, The Chemist
  • Exclusive item: Ball & Chain
The Wyrtorn
Resurrected from the brink of extinction through a groundbreaking scientific discovery in Germany, the Wyrtorn are unyielding in their pursuit of blood. Sparing no one, their three unique abilities give a new twist to playing as the Terror.

The Wyrtorn has three unique abilities: Maim, Howl and Hunt. Sprint at incredible speeds, and if you time it right, jump further to tackle your prey. This jump attack will help you whittle down Innocents’ Sanity with every bite, and you can disorient them with your Howl to make it harder for them to get away in the first place.
Curse: The Chemist
Our new Curse, The Chemist, joins the Mimic in the array of ways you can cause chaos and change up the game. As the Chemist, you’ll be spreading your poison among the group without them knowing who is responsible. Your goal is to poison all of the Innocents and Infected, and you’ll have to make sure everyone is poisoned to win!
New Map: Project Wurgen*
Explore the dark secrets of the macabre facility that carelessly resurrected the Wyrtorn Werewolf in the name of science—Project Wurgen.

With a new map comes new tasks to complete to release those all-important souls. We wanted to give you some idea of the kinds of tasks you can find and complete to escape from this macabre facility.

There’s an old-fashioned (or back in fashion?) vinyl player and a wine cabinet that hint at the luxury of the project’s founders. You’ll find bunsen burners and a decontamination room that you’d expect in a laboratory. But you’ll also find cages and cloning tanks that speak to the true cruelty that was inflicted in the name of science.

With a whole new array of tasks to get familiar with, which will be your new favourite?

*This map is free for all players.

We’re so excited to see your reaction and feedback to our newest Curse, our Werewolf Terror and Wurgen Map - send us your gameplay clips on Discord and social media.

We’ve got so much more coming to Deceit 2: you can read about Titles below in our section about Accolades but that’s not all!

This pre-season test period on Steam will be the quiet before the storm: Seasons are coming to Deceit 2! Each season will last 2 months and be themed with exclusive cosmetic rewards. Keep an eye out for more information on our first Season - Humble Beginnings - coming soon.

We’ve started work on The Crypt - sounds creepy, right? The Crypt is an exciting new minigame coming with the console release where you’ll be able to unlock rewards. Currently in game - new players will find themselves taken to the Crypt after levelling as human to unlock an item, or a mutation when levelling as infected. In the future, when the Crypt is ready to open its doors to everyone, you’ll find cosmetics for your characters and items in there, and you’ll unlock them using key fragments, which you’ll earn in Deceit 2’s Seasons. For existing players, to make sure you don’t go without for all your work and hard-earned hours in Deceit 2 so far, we’ll be exchanging the Favour you’ve already earned for key fragments at the upcoming console release. So get ready to spend, spend, spend!

We’ll also be continuing to work on your feedback, the UI, custom options, and game performance and optimisations. There will be even more to explore as we keep updating Deceit 2.

Along with the Free to Play launch on Steam we’ve also made significant changes to the game’s meta systems. Read on for more details!
Menu & UI update
Our menu and UI rework continues: we’ve got a new menu scene and loading screens, and the UI in the game has changed too. We’ve continued our pacing work to make the game move faster when going from the Inbetween back to Reality: executions can be seen across the map with outlines of the poor player who got sacrificed. We have also reworked Second Sight (default Q) to enable you to vote on other players during the Reality phase: with enough votes, a player will be eliminated. No more rushing to the other side of the map to get that crucial final vote in: now you can make your decision remotely.

We’ve also added a blocking feature inside player menus - click on someone’s profile in the End of Game scene or in the lobby and click ‘Block player’. We want our players to be safe and enjoy their time in the game, so if there is someone you don’t like playing with, this will stop you being matchmade with them.
New skins!
We’ve got two new skins in Deceit 2! You can go on a sweet, sweet rampage as the Chocolate Bunny Experiment Terror, and bounce around the Ritual in a skin for Jak created by Ohmwrecker! You can purchase these skins for 600 shillings in game. And that Golden Dragon Egg you worked so hard for during the Lunar New Year Event - it’s hatched! Roar with excitement as you find it in your Werewolf skins.
Character levelling
When playing games, you’ll now earn XP for both your Character and Team, which you’ll see on the game summary screen. Additionally - your nametag on the menu will display an “overall level”, which is the sum of your three team levels, capped at 100 per level - meaning there is a maximum overall level of 300.

For new players, XP earns you items when you level up the human characters, and Mutations when you level up as Infected. These will be unlocked in The Crypt - which you can read about above!

Everyone will be starting at level 0 - an even playing field. Who will be the first to reach the maximum level of 300?
Accolades
For the uninitiated, Accolades is the Mastery system in Deceit 2. Your Mastery Score comes from unlocking various challenges involved with being different roles, different tasks, and even how long you survive the Inbetween.

We’ve been working on updating this system to make it feel more rewarding to accomplish new Accolades and tie it back into the lore of the game. We’re calling it Ascension. And when you ascend, there is a new way to show off your mastery of the Ritual: Implants.

Accolade mastery was previously conveyed by the Plinth your character stood on in party lobbies. Plinths are being swapped for Implants, which you may already be familiar with: that piece of Game Master tech attached to your character's hand. They’ve had a fully-fledged makeover and are ready to use now! Implants won’t cost you a thing: you’ll unlock them when you reach that Mastery level. For existing players, your purchased plinths will be taken into consideration when we convert favour to the new Crypt system.

We don’t want mastery of Accolades to be unobtainable, as new content is added to Deceit 2. With the Console update we’re going to be hardcoding the Accolades so that when we add new Roles, your Mastery score won’t be affected. The values of the existing Accolades are dynamic, so recent additions of The Mimic and the Inquisitor, and the removal of the Clipboard and Pin Accolades, won’t have affected your Mastery score.

In the future, we’ll be introducing Titles, which are rewards from specific Accolades. These Titles can be unlocked for different accolades at different tiers - so you’ll be able to show off your achievements through the titles you’ve been able to achieve.

We hope you enjoy jumping into the game, levelling up your characters, poisoning other players as the Chemist, exploring Wurgen and leaping on your prey as the Werewolf!

Your feedback has never been more important to us. If you’re playing during this pre-season test period, then let us know in the comments or on our Discord what you think about the update!

The Deceit Team

New Roles

Even though we’re bidding farewell to the Lunar festivities, we're thrilled to offer more details on the future for Deceit 2 - its upcoming F2P launch and how you can get involved in shaping the release!
F2P & Console release
We can now confirm that our transition to a free-to-play model on Steam is set for March 13th. Those who've purchased Deceit 2 will receive our inaugural DLC, the Werewolf Pack, and additional in-game currency.

Today’s game update marks the start of “F2P Early Access”, where you’ll be able to try some of the new features we’ve been working on for the F2P launch.

Alongside this we're continuing to work tirelessly on bringing Deceit 2 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our aim is to release on these consoles alongside F2P next month, but this is still subject to final testing and approval of the huge number of changes we’ve made with Steam feedback. This final testing is underway now and we’ll let you know the moment we do. Thank you for your patience as the console launch has taken longer than we expected, but we are just as keen as you to see Deceit 2 on PlayStation and Xbox!
New Year, New Roles
To kick off our F2P Early Access period, we’re introducing "The Cursed", a new team ready to upend the game with chaos and bring a whole new level of strategy. The Cursed have their own win condition - eliminate the other teams - in order to be victorious. The other teams will have to route out who the Cursed player is to ensure their win too.

In this pre-launch testing period your feedback on these new roles is invaluable, especially as we prepare for the free-to-play launch. Dive in today to explore these changes, offer your feedback and help shape the future of Deceit 2!
Curse: The Mimic
The first Curse for the new Cursed team: choose how to win as the Mimic! Outlast the number of Terrors there are in your game, and then you will be able to copy the role of one of those who has perished, either by banishment or execution. Did the Guardian die? You can choose to take their power to protect players. Was a Terror voted out? You can join the remaining Terror and tip the scales again. The choice is yours - but be quick about your decision, or the Game Master will choose for you!
Innocent: The Inquisitor
Play detective as The Inquisitor. With your Scan ability, you’ll be able to investigate Weak Points to see how long ago they were activated, and if there was a Mutation acquired so you can see what it is in the Terrors’ arsenal. You’ll also be able to use your ability wheel (default ‘T’) to see incriminating footsteps left behind.

And that's not all - new roles for Innocent players are also on the way, empowering you like never before and adding a layer of unpredictability to each round.
Your Lunar highlights
What were your favourite parts of the Lunar New Year event? Now that the event has wrapped up, we’d love to get your feedback. Fill out our survey and you could be in with a chance of winning a signed Deceit 2 poster!

  • Added error messages for players that try to enter a game and fail.
  • Games will no longer wait the full timeout duration if a player has already failed to join the game. This should reduce the average duration that you're left waiting on a loading screen.
UI
• The progress bar(s) for Tasks you’re completing have been removed.
  • Everyone can now see some Team and Role information in ‘Second Sight’, although only the Terrors and Cursed can see the Innocent roles that are in the game.
  • The ‘Welcome Back To Reality’ pop-up no longer shows on the first Reality phase.
The Lunar New Year Event
Starting today and running until 20th February, try your luck at deceiving and framing, and find success at determining who is working against you.

Become the Mother (or Father, or Guardian) of Dragons! Collect dragon eggs across the map to gain Lunar points, which you can spend on the exclusive Lunar cosmetics.

Every Reality phase Dragon eggs will spawn across the map for you to pick up: every egg you collect will give you 200 points. A special Black dragon egg will spawn in the second Reality phase, which equates to a massive 1000 Lunar points!
Relight your fire with our Lunar Skins
Our Lunar New Year event introduces some spectacular Lunar-themed cosmetics, available in the Emporium for Shillings or Lunar Points:
  • Mysterious Golden Egg for 20,000 Lunar Points. But what will it hatch?
  • Lunar Southpaw Chang, Dragon Queen Lisa and Golden Dragon Nina: Celebrate the Lunar New Year in style for 600 Shillings or 10,000 Lunar Points.
  • Item skins: bring your A-Game with the item skins for the Knuckle Duster, Muzzle and Motion Tracker for 450 Shillings or 7,500 Lunar Points.
Lighting the way through the In-Between
You’ll also notice that Millhaven Asylum is decorated as if the employees abandoned it mid-way through a Lunar New Year party. Wander around and take in the dragon motifs, beautiful lanterns and pause to watch the fireworks in the sky.
Legacy of Terrors
The Legacy Reward Skins earned from all your hard work in Deceit 1 are now in-game!
Voted for by you, each of the six original characters from Deceit 1 now have these community-voted skins in Deceit 2.

So, you earned some groups in Deceit 1 - how do you pick your skins I hear you ask?! That’s easy - when you enter Deceit 2, it will recognise your Steam ID and bring through the data of how many skins you can collect. If you’ve earned one group, you can collect one skin. If you’ve earned all six groups, you can collect all six skins. The groups you’ve earned do not correspond with a specific group - you get to choose your favourites. Once you’ve checked that box and submitted your choice, there’s no takesy-backsy - so make sure you’re sure!

Enjoy the Lunar New Year update and we’ll see you in game!
Patch Notes

Audio
• Added an audio effect to the Walkie Talkie voice chat.
  • Added an audio effect to the Infected voice chat.
  • Voice chat in the In-Between is now global, but is heavily modified by audio effects. As part of this you can also hear yourself when talking in this state.
  • You can now hear yourself through the Tannoy system when you use it.
  • Added several audio cues to draw you towards Tasks that are activated.
  • Added several audio cues for when you fail a Task.
Gameplay
• You can now fail Tasks. Failing a Task causes them to be deactivated and outlines you to the Terrors. If the Task is one that you ‘zoom into’ then leaving it will automatically fail it.
  • The Matching Cards Task will now show you all of the cards face-up before you attempt to pair them. Picking an incorrect pair will cause the Task to fail.
  • The ‘Whack-A-Mole’ Tasks (e.g. the Freezers in the Morgue) will now allow you to interact with several doors at once. Picking the wrong one will fail the Task.
  • The Walkie Talkie has been reworked to give you a pair of Walkie Talkies instead of just the one. You can then give a Walkie Talkie to another player and exclusively talk with them.
  • Players using voice chat in the In-Between will now be outlined to the Terrors.
  • Crouching will now cause you to use a shorter range proximity chat, allowing you to whisper to nearby players.
  • You can now speak to other spectators when dead. You will also be able to talk with everyone once the final cinematic starts playing.
  • The ‘Silence’ mutation no longer stops players from using the Walkie Talkie and infected chat, but does stop players from using the Tannoy system.
  • [FIXED] Using the Muzzle on someone during the ‘Silence’ Mutation can cause the Muzzled player to become unmuted sooner than intended.
  • [FIXED] Infected players can’t see the outline on a Vulnerable player.
Tech
• [FIXED] Players can sometimes incorrectly fail to load into the game, causing the game to fail to start.
UI
• Players that are banned will now be shown what rule they broke when they open the game.
  • Added a debuff visual for the ‘Silence’ Mutation.
  • [FIXED] The button to stop matchmaking in the Menu’s top bar doesn’t work.
Translations & Localisation
• Several translations have been updated.

Balancing and Pacing update

As we progress towards making Deceit 2 free to play, we’ve had our heads down making major improvements to the game based on community feedback.

This week’s update focuses on balancing and pacing in Deceit 2: we want to create a faster and smoother pace of gameplay. Read on for a flavour of what we’ve added to this game this week.
Enraged and empowered
We’ve made tweaks to the ‘Enrage’ period that Terrors enter when the Escape Key is collected by Innocents: One common complaint we heard was that all Innocents regularly end up without the sanity needed to escape the map. To counter this Rift Eyes will no longer activate during the Enrage period. Ghost form magically disappears during this period too, so you can see what humans are around you. It’s nice to know who your friends are.
Mutant Ninja Terrors
We’ve reconfigured the Mutations Spell wheel: Mutations now only spawn once per game, and we have made the Spell wheel clearer and easier to use. The Mutation ‘Soul Swap’ has a new effect that blinds Terrors to counter them delivering a poor Innocent to their teammate. Risk-reward, as they say. Our newest Mutation also enters the game: ‘Silence’ replaces ‘Paranormal’ - muting all players for 30 seconds or until the end of that In-Between phase. The ‘Earthquake’ Mutation has had a big buff too: it now destroys cameras and tannoys in the same range as wall cracks.
Keep on movin’
To move the game along and keep the momentum up as you go through the game, we’re making some significant QOL changes across the board. We’ve removed some aspects of Second Sight from the game: available souls have a visual effect and will whisper from the task they’re trapped in to bring you to them, and Infected will always see the position of Innocents (with the exception of the Final Showdown: when it’s just you and one pesky Innocent remaining, or you’re the last Terror standing against two Innocents).
We’ve improved the smoothness of entering and leaving tasks, and there are new default items as the Clipboard and Inspection pin have been removed. It will take 60 seconds for the Inspection Machine to boot up at the beginning of the game and you now unlock the Inspection Machine with the pin that is handily left on the table beside it! Those Asylum employees had no sense of password protection.

This is just an overview of the key features added with today’s update; for all the ins & outs - like how we’ve moved the skin variants to their own page as we continue to work on the game’s UI - check out the patch notes below.

Stick with us as we move ever closer towards making the game free to play: we’ve been collecting the questions you’ve been asking and we’ll be sharing more information with you at the end of this month.
Patch Notes

Art
• Hovering players in your party will now highlight them with a beam in the Main Menu.
Audio
• Updated the Enrage phase music so that it ramps up the closer the Escape Key holder gets to the Escape Door. Once the door starts being unlocked there is also a global audio cue played.
  • You can now talk with everyone that you just played with in the post game summary screen. This is a room based voice chat system, so if your party member leaves the summary screen you won’t be able to talk to them until you do the same.
Gameplay
• The duration of the Reality phases have been adjusted. They will no longer scale based on the number of players alive, and the impact of activating Weak Points has been reduced. On average this will mean the earlier Reality phases are shorter, and the later ones are slightly longer.
  • A custom setting has been added for adjusting how Reality phases scale based on the number of alive players.
  • As we prepare for releasing our second Terror, the Werewolf, we’ve moved the Rift Eyes to be an Experiment specific passive. As part of this and some other balancing changes:
    • The Rift Eyes will no longer activate on their own, instead they will activate based on when the Experiment Terror(s) uses their Scream ability. Each Scream usage will activate half of the Rift Eyes in half of the rooms. The room selection is completely random, meaning 2 Experiments could activate Rift Eyes in either every room or half of them, and everywhere in-between. The number of Eyes allowed to be activated per room is capped to half.
    • The Rift Eyes will no longer automatically turn on when in the Enrage phase.
    • Rift Eyes are now independent of each other, rather than being heavily linked to a cluster within a room. This means hitting a Rift Eye with light will only disable that one Eye. Despite this change, there’s no change to how fast you lose Sanity based on how many Eyes are looking at you. 5 Eyes draining your Sanity will still be the same rate as 1 Eye.
    • Rift Eyes will now only lock on to one player at a time, and will remain on the player until they break line of sight (or blind them!).
    • Rift Eyes now have a clearer ‘waking up’ state and can be blinded during this to stop them from revealing you and draining your Sanity.
  • If the Escape Key is collectable from the Peddler as you enter the In-Between, the Enrage phase will automatically start. Note: the Enrage phase will still automatically start whenever the Escape Key is collected.
  • Humans will no longer appear in their Ghost Form during the Enrage phase.
  • Second Sight has been adjusted to no longer reveal objects around the map when using it. It will still provide information about the game, and the players in it, like before.
  • The Infected will now have outlines of Human players during the Reality phase. This is disabled when entering the Final Showdown (when only 1 vote is required for an elimination).
  • Tasks that are completable will now have a soul particle effect playing on them, alongside an audio cue to draw you towards them.
  • The Inspection Pin and Clipboard items have been removed from the Peddler’s inventory. The Muzzle and Sanity Serum have replaced them as default unlocked items.
  • The Inspection Machine will now begin the game in a booting state. After 1 minute, players may enter the pin code found near it to use the Machine.
  • Infected players will no longer see the available Mutations in the game on their Role Wheel.
  • Mutations are no longer granted to the Infected on game start, however the number of Mutations placed on Weak Points has been increased from 2 to 4 per Reality phase.
  • Collected, and used, Mutations will no longer be reinserted into the pool of available Mutations to collect from Weak Points.
  • The Earthquake Mutation will now destroy Tannoy speakers and CCTV cameras as well as Wall Cracks.
  • The Soul Swap Mutation will now trigger a Light Trap-esque flash to blind any Terrors waiting for you on the other side.
  • The Paranormal Mutation has been replaced with a new Mutation, Silence. Silence will mute every player for 30 seconds.
  • The ‘Multiply’ Mutation has been disabled - this is primarily because of the notable performance impact it can have for some machines.
  • The Shower room’s Weak Point has been moved to reduce visibility from other rooms.
  • The Lobby room’s Weak Point has been moved into the Kitchen.
  • Several tasks have been moved around inside the Millhaven Asylum.
  • Upgraded the supported version of AMD’s FSR from FSR2 to FSR3.
  • [FIXED] Muzzled players can use the Tannoy system.
  • [FIXED] The Bandage item is hard to use on masculine characters.
UI
• The Sanity loss hit markers have been reduced in size.
  • Variants of cosmetics are now nested within the parent cosmetic in the Collection tab.
Translations & Localisation
• Several translations have been updated.
