NIMRODS | Progress Update V

[p]Hey NIMRODS!

We've been heads-down working on some of the biggest changes NIMRODS has seen since our early access launch, and we want to give you an update and preview of what is to come. Let's get into it.

The Rebalance
[p]If you've been following our updates, you know we've been working toward a major rebalance. In Progress Update III and IV, we talked about how multiplicative scaling was creating some incredible highs, but also making late-game balance nearly impossible to get right. That rebalance is complete and coming in the next update. Here's what changed:
[/p][h3]Stat Caps & Diminishing Returns[/h3][p]We've replaced hard stat clamps with a proper soft cap and diminishing returns system. Previously, stats like Rate of Fire were hard-clamped at fixed values (like 60). Now, stats continue to scale past their soft cap with diminishing returns.
[/p][h3]Special Power Rework[/h3][p]"Special Power" has been renamed to Auxiliary Damage and its damage curve has been rebuilt. The new formula scales more predictably and ties into the broader rebalance so that ability-focused builds can still shine.
[/p][h3]Every Augment, Redesigned[/h3][p]Beyond tweaking the math, most augment lines needed more than just a stat tuning. Some were designed early in development when we had a different picture of where NIMRODS was heading. Every single augment line has been audited, rebalanced, and in many cases fundamentally redesigned with brand new modifiers and mechanics. We've also added many new augment lines to the roster.

New Biome: Violet Forest
[p]A new biome is coming: the Violet Forest. A dense fungal wilderness full of towering mushrooms, shelf fungi, glowing lichens, and pools of slime. Enemies here fight dirty: spore clouds choke out your positioning, puffballs explode underfoot, and the deeper you go, the more the forest fights back. New environment, new hazards, new unlocks.[/p][p]New enemies: Spore Cannon, Fat Fungus, Balloon Fungus, Healing Puff Ball, Elemental Mushrooms, and the Bouncy Shroom.[/p][p]New bosses: Mush, King Slime, Bee Swarm, Sal Shrieker, Puff Puff, and Spore Cannon Squad.[/p][p]

Endless Mode
[p]It's happening. After defeating the final boss, you'll get the choice to keep going and find out how far your gun can really take you. No ceiling, no safety net. Enemies scale, your build scales even harder, and eventually the screen is just a wall of projectiles and numbers. It's the part of a run where your gun stops making sense and starts making art. Here's what Endless looks like:[/p]
  • [p]After the final boss falls, a transition prompt lets you choose to continue into Endless.[/p]
  • [p]Endless has its own wave generation system with procedural scaled enemy waves.[/p]
  • [p]New enemy types designed specifically for Endless, including skeletons, flying skulls, and specters.[/p]
  • [p]Waves regenerate and scale with a dedicated endless balance curve.[/p]

Everything Else
[h3]New Gun Chassis[/h3][p]New starting guns are being added to the roster:[/p]
  • [p]Banana Gun: fires boomerang projectiles that arc back to you.[/p]
  • [p]Ricochet: bullets bounce between enemies with cutting damage.[/p]
  • [p]Golden Gun: execute-focused chassis that replenishes ammo on kill.[/p]
  • [p]Minelayer: drops mines instead of firing projectiles.[/p]

Gene System Updates
[/h3][p]The gene system had more complexity than it needed. We've stripped out gene quantities, recombination, genome layouts, and the gene store. Each character now has one ability type, and the Gene Upgrade Station is your one-stop shop for viewing and upgrading genes. This makes it much easier for us to add new characters to the game and introduce unique genes for you to experiment with.[/p][p]
[/p][h3]Airdrop Reworks[/h3][p]Most airdrop pods have been reworked to be more impactful and fun. Medic Pod now leaves behind its pulse healing zone even if you collect it early, Smasher Pod has scaled knockback with a slow effect, and every other pod has received similar treatment.[/p][p]
Here is an example of the reworked Blackout Pod. Gravity wells will suck enemies into the impact zone prior to impact and also emit small gravity bombs.

[/p][h3]Meta Upgrades[/h3][p]A new Meta Upgrade station has been added to the Home ship. Meta upgrades unlock new features or apply permanent stat bonuses on deploy.[/p][p]
[/p][h3]Final Boss Reworks[/h3][p]Our endgame bosses have been rebuilt using a new extended boss pattern system to make them much more engaging and interesting to fight.[/p][p]

Wrapping Up
[p]We know it's been a minute since our last progress update, and we appreciate your patience. This is a huge one. Over a thousand changes touching nearly every system in the game. The changelog alone is going to be enormous. The rebalance, the augment reworks, the new biome, endless mode: it all adds up to the most ambitious update we've ever shipped.

The identity of NIMRODS isn't changing. Wild, over-the-top gun builds are still the heart of the game. [p]Hey NIMRODS!

We're back with another update. We want to share what we've been working on and what to expect in the future.[/p][p][/p]
Rebalance & Endless Mode
[p]Progress continues on augment reworks discussed in our previous devlog.

We’ll be running several Beta tests to make sure everything feels the most exciting, satisfying, and still unmistakably NIMRODS.

Our goal for 1.0 is to double down on what makes NIMRODS shine: goofy, over-the-top gun builds - not overly complicated or grindy systems (we hear you!). This approach also sets us up to make Endless Mode far more rewarding and replayable.

We’re also tightening up our balance tooling. While nothing is ever perfectly balanced on a spreadsheet, relying purely on “feel” isn’t enough either. The sweet spot is somewhere in between.

Expect a Beta announcement shortly after the holidays. Once this new foundation lands, we can ship new augments, characters, and content much faster - making the path to 1.0 far more predictable.[/p][p][/p]
New Characters
[p]We’ve got a lot of Characters planned. We're currently targeting 10 playable characters for 1.0. Each one is designed to introduce a distinct playstyle, not just a visual reskin. More are being designed, but if you have an idea for a character, let us know![/p][p][/p][h2]Gravitos[/h2][p]Collection playstyle that introduces a new way to build around pickup mechanics.[/p]
  • [p]Passive: Nearby pickups orbit you and deal damage to enemies they hit. Resources get collected after each orbit.[/p]
  • [p]Ability: Activates a magnetic surge that pulls in all orbiting pickups.[/p][p][/p]
[p] [/p][p][/p][h2]Bubba[/h2][p]Unique playstyle centered around building Max Health.[/p]
  • [p]Passive: Bubba can collect food even at full health and any HP that is wasted will be converted to permanent Max Health.[/p]
  • [p]Ability - Cornfed: Bubba pauses briefly to eat an ear of corn. After eating the mutated corn, his Max Health and size increases, Enemies are also getting pushed back.

Drone Rework
[p]Drones are a core part of NIMRODS, and we want to make them even better. Currently, selecting Movement and Targeting options through menus can feel overly complex. Instead, we’re exploring a system with multiple Drone types, each with distinct utilities and purposes.

This opens up new playstyles, meaningful choices, and exciting synergies. Some Drones may offer unique rewards for completing a run (achievements), while others can significantly power up your build if you find the right synergy.

We’re still deep in the design phase, but here are a few early previews:

New Chassis
[p]We are working on adding some fun new options to the mix. Let us know which one is your favorite![/p][p][/p][h2]Ricochet Gun[/h2][p]Ripper / Ripjack - Got ideas for a name? We're open to suggestions!

Fires a buzz saw that ricochets off of enemies[/p][p][/p][p][/p][h2]Golden Gun[/h2][p]It has a Magazine Size of 1 with very high Bullet Damage.

Each kill will refund your bullet. If you miss a shot, you will be penalized with a long Reload - think Golden Eye.

[/p][p][/p][h2]Banana Gun[/h2][p]Similar to the Bananarang, but as a starting Chassis. Fires a banana that boomerangs back to you based on the number of Penetrations.

New Augments
[p]We’re currently working on several new augments, all in the design & art phase. We don’t have visuals to share just yet, but expect them in the next progress update - and trust me, there’s a ton of new ones![/p][p][/p]
Violet Forest
[p]Violet Forest is nearly complete, featuring new enemies, bosses, and environment art. We also have several additional biomes in the design workshop phase, so expect more environments to roll out in the future.

Unity DOTS Livestream
[p]We're hosting a livestream with Unity where we break down how NIMRODS makes use of DOTS to scale past 100,000+ bullets.
