METAL SUITS, new planets Ladren, and new game mode

Hi all! I’m already writing my 16th development journal. Over the past two months, externally, we have won an award at the 2nd GYAAR Studio Indie Game Contest hosted by Bandai Namco and sponsored by SUPERCELL. Internally, we have been focusing hard on developing the game ahead of its release this year.

Although it is a side-scrolling action game, some airplane shooting game modes had to be included, so an airplane shooting game is also being produced and the final balance is being adjusted.

So far, we have introduced you to 7 planets. Today I would like to introduce you to the eighth planet, called Ladren.

[h2]1. Ladren[/h2] 1) Planet Description




Planet Ladren is a planet entirely covered in ice. It’s a barren planet like the previous planet Burniny.

Fortunately, light can penetrate the ice, and the residents live near the river that runs through the ice caves.

It’s an icy planet, but it’s also rumored that the reason it’s so warm underneath isn’t because of the light that reaches into the ice caves, but because there’s a huge, unknown energy source underground. Perhaps that’s why Golida took over this place.




2) Objects added to the planet Ladren

(1) Energy Ice Blocks

A block of ice in various shapes, but explodes on impact. They explode with a loud bang but don’t do any damage nearby.





(2) Mystery Ice Chunks

These are chunks of ice that are formed by clusters of ice, presumably influenced by the terrain. Sometimes breaking them will reveal items, but other times they will reveal enemies frozen in the ice.





(3) Aerial Blocks

Aerial blocks placed by Golida will descend to the ground when their weight is detected. If no weight is detected, they will return to their original position, so make good use of them.





(4) Toxic Organisms

An organism that drops itself to spread poison when a creature comes near it and is only found on Radren.





(5) Wall Moving Saw Grinder

You’ve seen sawtooth wheels spinning on blocks before, but this time they’re sawtooths that travel along a defined path on a wall.






(6) Laser Trap

A device that shoots lasers up and down every certain amount of time. Keep an eye on the timing and move.






[h2]2. Space Flight Shooting Mode[/h2]

Chapter 8 adds a scenario in which Kevin flies an airship into space and battles enemy fighters and big spaceships.

When you acquire a power-up kit, your ship can be enhanced five times.

Users can also get HP recovery, shields, and special skill items. We’re still working on this, so we’ll have more details when we’re done.

'METAL SUITS' is a pixel art-based 2D side-scrolling action game being produced by Eggtart. It received favorable reviews at last year's Gamescom 2023 and Tokyo Game Show 2023 for its retro-feeling pixel art with modern effects, and it won the New Platform Award in the BIG2023, followed by the GYAAR Studio Indie Game Contest Award.

METAL SUITS, new planets Noazm and Burniny

Hello, how are you all doing? It's been a while! It's been three months since I last posted a METAL SUITS development journal at the end of October 2023.

I know it's late, as January is already coming to an end, but I hope you all have a happy new year and that everything you want to do this year is going well!

Our METAL SUITS project is developing well and smoothly without any major issues. In order to ensure stable development and fast maintenance in the future, we have been refining the METAL SUITS project code from November to January, and it was completed without any major issues. And apart from refactoring, we are working hard to create new content.

Today we'd like to tell you about the new planets Noazm and Burniny.

[h2]1. Noazm[/h2]
1) Planet Description


Noazm is a planet made up entirely of jungles and rivers, and among the giant trees that make up the jungles, there are ancient structures believed to have been built in ancient times, as well as various ancient devices that have never been seen before. What is Golida up to in a place like this?




2) Objects added to the planet Noazm
(1) Zipline
When users ride a zipline, users can go down quickly, and when users jump, users can also go to the other side of the zipline.







(2) Pressing switches and rising rocks
Pressable switch will work when pressed from up, left, and right. Users can use the switches to perform various gimmicks.




(3) Unfolding ladder
An unfolding ladder is a ladder that extends when triggered by a switch or when certain conditions are met. If you see a ladder like this on your screen, even if you can't climb it, keep an eye on your surroundings.




(4) Magic Stone Bridge
A magical stone bridge that unfolds when triggered by a switch or when certain conditions are met. Users can move the cursor down on the bridge to go under it. It's still in development, so there's a bit of a bounce to it, but it will be cleaned up.




3) New enemies added to the planet Noazm
(1) Poison River and Piranha
The rivers on the planet Noazm are toxic and kill you if you touch them. And that's where the Noazm piranhas live, which are resistant to the toxic substance. If you're wearing a suit, you'll take damage, and if you're not wearing a suit, you'll die instantly if you touch them, so you have to be careful.




(2) Golida Javelin
The first enemy to appear in Noazm is the Golida Javelin. Unlike the original Golida, this one throws spears. If you encounter it alone, it's easy to dodge as its spear flies in a parabola instead of a straight line, but if it's attacking with other Golidas, it can be difficult to avoid.




(3) Golida Vine
A wooden Golida mutant. Its wooden body makes it vulnerable to fire. It attacks with vine spikes through the ground, so jump when it gets into an attack stance!





[h2]2. Burniny[/h2]
1) Planet Description




Burniny is a planet of red deserts, scorching hot and barren. The inhabitants of Burniny live in underground bases to escape the scorching heat. After the Golida invasion, they docked a large warship here.




2) Objects added to the Burniny planet

In the case of Planet Burniny, the main battle is to infiltrate the inside of Golida's large battle ship and annihilate the enemy rather than planet exploration and combat.

(1) Rising Metal Box
It has a switch or a metal box that rises or falls when a condition is met. 6 It has the same function as the rising boulder from region Noazm, but we've changed the design so that it can be used inside the Golida people's airship.




(2) Mineral magma
There is magma created by melting a mineral that the Golida tribe uses as an energy source and kills instantly upon contact. It was designed to turn on/off for safety, as even the Golida tribes would die if touched. You can turn it on or off by achieving certain conditions or operating a switch.




3) Enemies added to the planet Burniny

(1) Golida Tri-Pod Sniper
It's one of the Tri-Pod attack machines. It targets the enemy and fires quick bullets one at a time.




(2) Golida Tri-Pod Spider
When it spots an enemy with one of the Tri-Pod attack machines. It jumps in and performs a melee attack. As it is a mechanical robot or melee attack machine, its stamina is higher than that of other Tri-Pod machines.

METAL SUITS, Introduction to newly added and changed suits

After completing the world’s largest exhibitions, Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, by the end of September, our studio switched back to development mode starting in October.

New planets, enemies, and various objects are being added, but today I would like to tell you about newly added suits that have not been updated and changes to existing suits.

[h2]1. Kevin & Kyle[/h2]



Our main character, cyborg ‘Kevin’, has a slimmer torso and slightly fresher color than the first version.




To support two-player local/multiplayer, ‘Kyle’, a cyborg clone of Kevin, also appears. To ensure clear separation in-game, Kyle has been created in a blue-based color and will remain in a blue-based color even when wearing any combat suit.

For a 2-player play, please check the sample video below.




The UI in the video above is temporary so the UI will be configured to be neatly placed at the top of both sides at the time of release.


[h2]2. Cannon Bomb Suit[/h2]



The ‘Cannon Bomb Suit’ fires a powerful cannon, although the reload speed is a bit slow. The original form had Kevin wearing a duck-shaped tube-shaped suit, but with the update, it evolved into a form with a strong-shaped suit and a cannon in the middle of the chest.




The special skill of throwing the teddy bear and playing “I LOVE YOU” voice and then it splits into 4 grenades, is transferred to the Bear Bomb Suit. Afterward, a new chain explosion weapon was added as a special skill of the Cannon Bomb Suit.





[h2]3. Gatling Gun Suit[/h2]



In the case of the ‘Gatling Gun Suit’, it was originally shown as holding a large gatling gun, but as it was updated, it was changed to a form where the suit was more stylish and holding a gatling gun with a longer barrel.




The form of the special skill is the same as before, but some effects have been strengthened.





[h2]4. Firebug Suit[/h2]



The appearance of the ‘Firebug Suit’ has also been subtly changed. The details of the gas cylinder on his back have been improved, and the shape of the fire-breathing gun has also been improved.

Additionally, the appearance of the suit has been improved so that even the legs are completely protected from flames.




As you can see in the gif, the Firebug suit’s basic attack inflicts damage up to the bottom of the front.

The special skills of the Firebug Suit remain as powerful as before.





[h2]5. Electric Guitar Suit[/h2]



There are no major changes to the ‘Electric Guitar Suit’ in appearance. Originally, machine gun-type bullets were fired from the guitar, but improvements are in progress as they lack differentiating points or characteristics compared to other suits. This part is still being improved through planning, development, and testing, so it is difficult to say how it will change at this point, but please look forward to it soon being changed to an even better version than the current version of firing bullets.

The special skill of the Electric Guitar Suit remains as splendid as before.





[h2]6. Power Fist Suit[/h2]



The ‘Power Fist Suit’ does not have any major changes in appearance, but its basic attack speed has been increased and bullets fired by enemies can be deflected or exploded by the basic attack of the Power Fist Suit.




In the case of the Power Fist suit, when using a special skill, it is converted into an invincible form that absorbs enemy attacks. The suit’s gauge has been improved so that it does not consume the gauge while invincible.





[h2]7. Ninja Suit[/h2]



This is a newly added ‘Ninja Suit’. It is a suit that has the appearance of a cyber ninja and can throw three shuriken. The shuriken is equipped with a high-performance sensor, so if there is an enemy or destructible object nearby, it can freely change direction to fly to that location.




When using a special skill, 8 large shuriken are fired in 8 directions, and the shuriken reflects on the wall for a certain period of time and causes damage to enemies and objects in the space.




Please note that in the case of the ninja suit, the effect has not yet been applied when using special techniques.


[h2]8. Bear Bomb Suit[/h2]




This is the newly added bear-shaped suit ‘Bear Bomb Suit’. It is a suit that looks cute like a teddy bear, but moves quickly and throws powerful bombs in a parabolic direction.

The special feature of this suit is that it has the ability to throw bombs briefly or long depending on whether the attack button is pressed briefly or long. The bomb thrown by the Bear Bomb Suit is a sensor-equipped bomb that explodes when it touches an enemy or object, but when it touches a regular block, it rolls instead of exploding, so it will make good use of it.




The Bear Throw special skill of the existing Cannon Bomb Suit has been inherited from the Bear Bomb Suit. Be careful. Users can sometimes hear a creepy-low “I LOVE YOU” sound.





[h2]9. Lasersaber Suit[/h2]



The newly added ‘Lasersaber Suit’ has a sturdy appearance and includes a lasersaber. You can attack using a laser sword and sword aura, and like the Power Fist, bullets fired by enemies using a sword and sword aura can be deflected or exploded by the basic attack




In addition to the basic attack, the laser saber suit has an added feature that allows you to gather energy and attack with one flash by holding down the basic attack button.




When the Lasersaber Suit uses a special skill, it instantly attacks all enemies exposed on the screen. I think you will understand quickly if you watch the below video.





[h2]10. Drone Master Suit[/h2]



This is the newly added ‘Drone Master Suit’ who has an ‘Afro hairstyle’.

The Drone Master Suit summons drones that orbit around him at regular intervals and has a basic attack that flies the drones at the target. Enemies and objects within a certain range are automatically set as targets, and enemies and objects behind walls also have very powerful basic attacks that can attack through walls.




When you wear the Drone Master Suit and use a special skill, he will create 5 drones and launch them randomly at targets within the attack range.




[h2]11. Angry Fist Suit[/h2] (wasted)



It was initially planned and developed with a dash attack using a shotgun and fists in mind, but it has been discarded because it lacked differentiation or character from existing suits (it also resembled characters from the some game too much;;;).
After release, we will review the suit again and if we can improve it in another way, we will try to improve it and add it.

This is a description of the basic Kevin & Kyle and 9 combat suits created to date. There are some suits that are still in development, so some effects are missing, but the suits in development will be completed by the time of release and an additional six types of suits will be added. Therefore, a total of 15 suits will be included in the game at launch.

METAL SUITS, Tokyo Game Show 2023 Exhibition Participation Review

Following exhibiting in Gamescom 2023 in August, we exhibited at Tokyo Game Show 2023 in September. Although it was smaller than Gamescom, it consisted of four large halls, and a separate space was provided for business meetings. All holes were organized a little tighter than at Gamescom, making it a very well-organized event overall.




The weather was very humid and hot, like summer in Korea. Even on the first day of the event, the B2B start date, the air conditioner did not work properly, so we had to sweat profusely during the event.

Unlike Gamescom, this time all the Eggtart Inc. members participated in the event. Although it was an immoderate decision at the company level, it was made with the hope that all members developing the game would have a variety of experiences by watching users play and react at the event.










We were able to set up a booth in the Korean pavilion with support from the KOCCA(Korea Creative Content Agency), and during the four-day event period, the first two days were B2B and the remaining two days were B2C.




I think it was a big help to distribute press releases in Japan about 3 weeks before TGS with the help of a Japanese media person(Masa Kei - https://twitter.com/MasaKei123) I met by chance at the Banggusuk Indie Game Show before visiting the Tokyo Game Show.

Additionally, the press release was viewed more than 90,000 times on Twitter. We would like to thank Masa Kei from Japan for his great help with this post.




Many people came to our booth during the event. About 20 people cleared the boss. They showed superior gaming skills than the German visitors who visited Gamescom.




What was most impressive about this event was the coverage by local media and Korea Ruliweb. All of the reporters cleared the boss in one play. Not only were their gaming skills good, but the article was so in-depth that I could tell that they were a user who had played a lot of the genre over the years.

After the 4-day exhibition, we returned with a successful conclusion to the event. If the many doubts we had internally through Gamescom 2023 turned into confidence, in the Tokyo Game Show 2023, we gained great confidence that our game could be worked globally. Additionally, as all of the members participated in the exhibition event, I think everyone, including me, developed a similar sense of self-confidence. And above all, I think the great achievement is that we have become a stronger team than before through exhibitions in events and training camps(?).

We had business meetings with many domestic and global companies at the Tokyo Game Show 2023, and we plan to do our best to produce good results through continuous consultation.
