Dev Update #3 - Demo improvements and more

Hello adventurers! Greetings and on to our first devlog of the year! We've been hard at work for many different reasons, since 2024 promises to be a very Oppidum packed year! Hop in!



[h2]Steam Next Fest is coming![/h2]
If you've been following our post on Steam, our socials or are a member of our Discord community, then you already now that we've had our hands at a demo version for Oppidum for a while.

This demo is getting featured on Steam Next Fest, from February 5th-12th. The first few hours of the game will be available for you to have a little taste, guiding you through part of the story.

Even though this demo is fully enjoyable as a single player experience, Oppidum was made with multiplayer in mind, hence this demo also features multiplayer!


Here are some things we've improved in the past weeks and added to this demo:
  • Polished movement synchronization during multiplayer for a smoother experience.
  • Character customization has grown in depth, adding new options for facial features and body types.
  • We've incorporated a hunger system for fans of survival!
  • Implemented new effects for the characters' death. Your teammates can now revive you when you're down.
  • Improved ragdoll physics for enemies when hitting them.
  • Updated the animations for losing health for better feedback.
  • Fixed an issue when breaking tools while you were using them.
  • Fixed an issue where crops would sometimes grow in the wrong order.
  • Added a shortcut to unequip items from your inventory with a single button.
  • Improved the animations for seathing and unseathing.
  • Updated the music playing during the night, as well as at the player camp.
  • You can now check the game controls in the UI and during the demo introduction.
  • The grass now flattens much more when you sit on it. This helps with immersion when relaxing by the bonfire!
  • Added several new SFX, and polished some others.



It's worth mentioning too that we're still working on developing the game, and there are many features that were left out of this demo but will be present for the game's final release. So, if there's anything you're missing once the demo is out, take a look at this list. You might find it here ;)
  • Your camp will have an animal farm (if you build it!). You can take care of your animals to get some goodies from them 🐑
  • Love your tools, armor and weapons but they're so simple right? You'll be able to boost them with some perks.
  • Fruit and veggies are delicious, but they're even better when you bake them into muffins. You'll be able to use your camp's kitchen to make some tasty muffins that will give you buffs for your adventure.
  • There will be fishing in the game, useful for the aforementioned muffins. There's way too much water in the game for it to lack fish!
  • For the most curious (or competitive) of you all, player statistics will be available for you to check how many enemies you've defeated, how many resources you've gathered, how much land you've explored, etc.
  • Insule is vast, we know. And since the full game will be even bigger, with more accessible zones, you'll need a way to traverse it quickly. Expect horses as a mount to help you with this!
  • If you're still in a hurry in spite of your trusty steed, don't worry. Insule will provide with a quick way to return to some key locations by teleporting.
  • Insule is quite sunny at the moment, but that won't always be the case. Expect weather effects to come to the island for release.
  • Of course, we will give you the chance to re-map the game's controls, so you can play it as you prefer.
  • Your inventory won't always be that tiny and your buildings won't always be level 1, worry not! The fluffy friends you'll meet in the game will help you... eventually...
