Soul Dier - Part 1 News

"Soul Dier - Part 1" Is Available Now!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]After over 5 years of development, we are excited to announce "Soul Dier - Part 1" is available now![/p][p][/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p]

The New Demo Is Available Now!

Demo Content
[p]The new demo includes the prologue of the game, which is about 10% of part 1 in terms of the playtime.[/p]
  • [p]Demo: Prologue[/p]
  • [p]Part 1: Prologue + Chapter 1 + Chapter 2[/p]
[p](Note: Prologue is significantly shorter compared to the other two chapters.)[/p]
Old Demo
[p]There was another demo in the past (both on itch.io and Steam, currently unlisted). We still recommend you to try out the new demo even If you have played that before because:[/p]
  1. [p]The old demo contains the different part of the game (the first half of chapter 1)[/p]
  2. [p]The old demo is very outdated[/p]
Versioning
[p]The new demo will share the same versioning with the main game, and the experience of prologue in the demo and main game should be identical.[/p]
Progression Continuation
[p]There is no need to worry about losing progression when buying part 1 in the future. The demo or part 1 share the same save files, and the progression from the demo can be carried to part 1. The achievement you got in demo will also be re-triggered in part 1 when starting with the game save.[/p][p]Note that, there is no guarantee for the reversed direction (using a save from part 1 in the demo), but you probably won't need that anyway.[/p]
Available Duration
[p]The demo is available now. It will stay available at least till the release (late October this year). Due to the added complexity to maintain multiple builds of the game, we MAY discontinue the demo in the future after the part 1 release, so we highly recommend you to try it out before that![/p][p][/p][p]Finally, don't forget to wishlist "Soul Dier - Part 1"![/p]

Don't worry, we didn't give up

TL;DR

We have stopped posting progress updates on "Soul Dier" since early 2023 on all platforms. It is not because we stopped the development, but instead, we were more focused on some other works to secure our financial states, so that we can keep developing the game without rushing.

The Story

Initially, we thought we could finish the game within two years. However, after 2-3 years of daily and full-time development, we realised that we heavily underestimated it and we needed significant more time.

Obviously we didn't get any money just by developing the game, so, we considered putting it on Kickstarter to support our development, and we had actually prepared the Kickstarter page (including a trailer) and some other tedious paperworks.

However, we eventually cancelled this plan because we were not confident about it.

Around that time, we luckily started getting opportunities to work on some other projects for a decent income. It slowed down the progress of the game, but it allowed us to not have to worry about rushing the game at the same time.

Doing marketing is very time-consuming, and we did not want to drag out the pace of the development even more. That's why we stopped doing progress updates.

Part 1 and Part 2

Since we now have decent incomes from our jobs, we are able to spend more time polishing the game. But with only two people working on it, completing the game will still take a very long time, to the point that we don't consider it feasible to finish the whole game in a reasonable time frame.

This is why we decided to separate the game into two parts. I know people may not like this idea (neither do we), but finishing the whole game probably needs a couple more years (almost 10 years in total), which is really too long for us.

Our original plan for Soul Dier is for it to have 5 total chapters (including a shorter prologue chapter). With our current plan to split up the game, part 1 includes the prologue and two main chapters (around 14 levels for each of them) while part 2 will include the two other chapters. We are also considering adding one extra interlude chapter for part 2.

We currently plan to make the part 2 as a DLC in the future, but this hasn't been finalized yet.

The Current State

Part 1 is pretty much finished. We are fixing a few remaining bugs and preparing for some final rounds of playtesting. The game will be launched within 2025. There will be more promotional materials coming.
