File 01 // What to expect from this metroidvania adventure

Morning, gang!

It’s been a month since Altered Alma was featured in the PC Gaming Show and we opened the doors of this tiny blogging space. Though it might seem a little time, the truth is that a lot of interesting stuff happened over all these weeks. The most important one is that the number of wishlists you gave us exceeded our wildest estimations. This is the action that helps us gain more relevance on Steam, so we feel super grateful that so many people believed in the game. Thank you very much!
Having said the good news, it’s time to move on and offer you a few more details on Altered Alma's key features. This is, basically, what you’ll be able to do in the game as Jackelyne, our charismatic and deadly antiheroine.
A space opera metroidvania
Set in the futuristic metropolis of Neo-Barcelona, Altered Alma follows the rise of a young but talented mercenary named Jackelyne. This expedition will take you both to the brightest and the darkest areas of the city, where you'll find your first jobs as well as a colorful cast of multicultural rivals to prove your strength, potential crew members and interesting stuff that may help you restore your spaceship.

Once a location has been unlocked, you'll be free to pay a visit as many times as you want — the deeper you go into its alleyways, the bigger your reward will be… but also, the risks to take. Usually, you'll end up pissing off the big bosses of the Neo-Barcelonian underworld, so make sure to be ready for that moment!
Revisit Barcelona like never before
Despite the game’s dystopian undertone, we'd love players to wish they could get lost in the city. Altered Alma is a love letter to the real Barcelona, where 2Awesome Studio is based in, and its colorful society. We mixed our memories and feelings with some crazy ideas of what we think this place could be like in a very distant future. The result is a dreamy neon-lit metropolis fed on dreams and ambition, with all kinds of dark secrets lying under the surface.

As you may have noticed in Altered Alma’s first trailer, the game will feature iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and Las Ramblas. Wanna try and guess which other locations we haven't shown yet?
Engage in intense combat
What fun would it be to seize power without smashing a couple heads first? That's not the way of a mercenary, you know. In Altered Alma, violence will be your main tool for dialogue, because there is no language more universal and effective than a punch in the face. Or a stab, or a hammer blow…

Master Jackelyne’s swift moves (jumps, feints, weapon throws) as you flow through the streets of Neo-Barcelona and adapt your combat strategy to each type of enemy you encounter. Plus, you’ll have the chance to enhance your body and learn a cool set of skills to slaughter your enemies in no time.
Build up your headquarters
Jack’s new spaceship is, with all the letters, a rust bucket on the verge of disintegration. But that’s about to change, because this girl is gonna do her best to give it a second life as the best headquarters ever seen in Neo-Barcelona!

Explore the city in search of useful components to restore the transport and fill it with all kinds of useful resources — from a Repair Station, going through a workbench to create new power ups, to an Armory room. The crew members you hire after completing a plot event or a substory, as well as the quality of these relationships, also affect Jack's combat options and playstyle.
Enemies to lovers
Even in this unforgiving world, you will be able to find some affection. Spend time with your crewmates, listen to their woes and help each other on their journey. Maybe one of those relationships will reward you with true love!

Recently, we were asked in the Steam forums if Jackelyne will be able to like someone of the same gender. One more time, we want to make clear the answer is “yes”, all options will be welcome :)
An all-star writing team
It’s not everyday that you get legendary game writers Antony Johnston (Resident Evil: Village, Dead Space) and Emma Beeby (Tails of Iron, F1 2023) to create the story of your next game — this time, it happened to us. The story of Alma will make you gawp, we're 100% sure!
MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT
These are the aspects of Altered Alma we’ve been working on in the past few weeks:
 • After a final review process, we can proudly announce that the main story of the game is finally complete in its first draft form. Some character and gang names have changed A LOT, and we hope to be able to tell you more about it very soon.
 • The Metro district gang boss has been successfully implemented. We can’t wait for you to find out about it on social media!
 • New minor enemies just landed on the neon-lit streets of Neo-Barcelona. Rest assured that Jackelyne will give them a warm welcome ;P
 • We implemented several adjustments in other boss fights and city areas.
 • There’s a new lighting system working for the whole map that intensifies the shadows and makes the streets look a bit darker, so you always feel a bit unsure of what might be lurking in the shadows…

File 00 // Altered Alma, revealed on the PC Gaming Show 2023

Hey there, gang!

Many years of hard work and secrecy ended today with the first public appearance of Altered Alma which was unveiled at the PC Gaming Show 2023. What a big start, eh? A few months ago it was something that we couldn’t have even imagined, although we always believed in the game’s potential to make players fall in love instantly.

But let's not beat around the bush, because it's time to celebrate this milestone in Altered Alma's history! For those who missed Altered Alma’s debut on PC Gamer's event, here's the presentation trailer we premiered and a bit more info on what’s been shown:

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Altered Alma is a space opera metroidvania following the adventures of Jackelyne, a young mercenary newly arrived in the neon-lit streets of Neo-Barcelona. In her journey, Jack will accept all kinds of dangerous jobs and make difficult moral choices to grow her reputation amongst the gangs leading the city — sometimes, even risking her new friends and loved ones.

Exploration will be key to progress in the story of Altered Alma. You and Jack will travel across several unique areas inspired by the real districts of Barcelona. This futuristic version of the city is rich in resources, but also full of shady peeps: thugs waiting for a chance to get your belongings, aggressive fetishists, powerful gang bosses... Believe us when we say that pacifism is not an option.

So in a place like this, the only way to keep climbing the ladder is to become stronger. It’s not just about purchasing better armor and weapons, but adapting your combat style and developing special traits that help you fight the toughest enemies easily. This involves a part of the resources to repair your spaceship and recruit new crew members. This location will be your haven, training center and operations HQ.

Amidst all the stress and violence, Jackelyne will need people to lean on. Most will be sympathizers and good friends, while others will make their way to her heart in a more physical way. One way or another, you'll have multiple chances to forge amazing relationships with people from Neo-Barcelona. Don't throw them away!

For now, that’s all we’re allowed to say! We'd hate to reveal more surprises than necessary in this first contact. So allow us to move on and briefly introduce ourselves:

We are 2Awesome Studio, the Spanish devs behind AK-xolotl, Aeon Drive and Dimension Drive. The studio was born in 2017 but our founders knew each other for almost a decade, as they worked together previously at the European Space Agency. Altered Alma is the materialization of the great dream they had back then — to be able to dedicate themselves to the development of a big game with a bit of experience in this field and a larger team at their command.

There’s still a long way to go before the game is released. But keep calm, we don't intend to leave you without news all this time! Month by month, we’ll be sharing development diaries, event chronicles and much more in this wonderful space. So get ready to become a true expert on Altered Alma! And, of course, feel free to suggest new topics and leave questions for us to reply in any of the next entries.

Last but not least, remember the golden rule — wishlist the Steam games you like! And invite your friends to do so, especially if they love the cyberpunk genre.
