Why is stadium neutrality so important to us in Copa City? Devlog #2

While preparing for the production of Copa City, we made several very important decisions regarding the basic design of the game. One of them is the maximum neutralization of the stadiums where matches take place in Copa City, which the player must prepare, as this is the core of the gameplay. In today’s article, I want to explain why we made this decision.

Gameplay in Copa City revolves around two key elements – the city, including the stadiums, and licensed football clubs. The player's goal is to take on the role of event organizer and achieve the best possible results in the match organization process, measured by the satisfaction of the fans coming to the city and the revenue generated. This approach makes the player's role in relation to the clubs neutral in terms of main gameplay service – the goal is to satisfy the needs of both groups of fans, as well as to maintain a proper level of safety and balance between them, which is also one of the components of the player's success in the game.

To achieve an ideal balance between the clubs, we decided on an agnostic approach regarding cities. In this way, we simulate a match situation, drawing inspiration from events such as the National Cup Final, the Champions League Final, or the Europa League. This approach allows the player to fully focus on the organizational challenges behind match day without having to deal with the “home/away” aspect. In our opinion, introducing this element would disrupt the balance of the game at the level of the core economic principles in Copa City.

Of course, at the same time, nothing prevents the player from making such a decision in their own mind and choosing to focus exclusively on the needs of their favorite club, thereby disrupting this balance. Paradoxically, this approach means that Copa City can also be challenging in terms of maintaining safe balance, disrupted by such player behavior, who will be catering to the needs of their favorite club's fans.

When choosing cities, and consequently stadiums, we also considered their topographical characteristics and the saturation of urban space with symbols associated with football. As a result, the game’s design will allow for map differentiation not only in terms of appearance but also in the style and nature of gameplay. This is one way to keep the player’s attention for a longer time.

Olympiastadion Berlin announced as the next arena in Copa City

Following the successful unveiling of the first football tycoon “Copa City” in June 2024, We are announcing the next city extension by adding the Olympiastadion in Berlin to Copa City. This is another milestone on our path to launch the game in 2025, says Jakub Szumielewicz (CEO and Founder at Triple Espresso).

“Copa City” was announced in June 2024 at the PC Gaming Show 2024. The game quickly made headlines in both sports and gaming media as one of the hottest independent productions announced this summer. Over 100,000 people have added it to their wishlists, and a community of more than 90,000 followers eagerly awaiting the title’s debut has formed on social media. The game will introduce a revolutionary twist to the tycoon genre, as the players will need to organize a top class football match and deal with ensuring safety and providing entertainment to the thousands of demanding football fans before the kick-off, utilizing diverse mechanics and strategic planning to achieve the “football fiesta”, a unique factor of satisfaction of supporters.

From the very beginning, when we announced 'Copa City,' we emphasized how important it is for us to collaborate with leading partners from the football industry, says Szumielewicz. On day one we introduced PGE Narodowy in Warsaw as the first arena in our project and promised that more stadiums would be announced soon. Today, we are proud to welcome Olympiastadion Berlin, one of the most incredible football stadiums in the world located in one of the most inspiring cities on our planet. Never before have players had a chance to host a football match in Berlin, manage the flow of football fans through its iconic streets and squares, and organize the final parade from the Brandenburg Gate through Tiergarten to the Olympiastadion.

Olympiastadion Berlin with the capacity of nearly 75,000 seats is the largest football stadium in Germany and one of the most important arenas in Europe. Since its full and successful renovation in 2004, the Olympiastadion Berlin has hosted top fixtures in global football: 2006 FIFA World Cup final, 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup match, 2015 UEFA Champions League final and six games of the recent UEFA EURO 2024 including the final.

The announcement of the cooperation between “Copa City” and the Olympiastadion Berlin aligns with our previously revealed strategy of signing official licensing agreements with PGE Narodowy stadium in Warsaw, as well as with the top brands like Arsenal FC, FC Bayern Munich and CR Flamengo that will also be featured in the game. Upon its release in 2025, “Copa City” will offer players access to six world-class football clubs and three iconic stadiums.

What Are Clubs in Copa City? Devlog #1

One of the most important elements in Copa City is football club fans. The gameplay revolves around them. To adapt this concept to a tycoon game, we had to create a unique approach—a matrix that allows us to present the fans of a given club in a way that highlights the significant differences between them.
Everything Starts with Needs
Copa City is a tycoon game that revolves around the needs of the fans. Everything starts from there. When designing the system of needs, we divided them into four main areas:
• Need for food
• Need for accommodation
• Need for safety
• Need for entertainment (which we call the need for a football festival)

The expectations of the fans in the game are built around these four needs. The player's task is to adapt the city's infrastructure to meet these expectations. Importantly, each club will have a different way of realizing these needs—some will require better hotel facilities, while others will demand higher security levels at events—this will influence the player's strategy during gameplay.
Additionally, the needs of both clubs affect each other, meaning that each match-up will require a different approach to gameplay and strategy.
Demographics of the Fan Base – The Basis of Balance
Another very important aspect of the game is the demographic structure of the fan base. To add depth to the game, we divided the fans coming to the city into three main categories:
• Fans
• Ultras
• Family supporters

Each of these groups focuses on different types of needs, as mentioned earlier, adding further depth to the gameplay. Depending on the club, the player must not only manage the "needs of the club" but also the needs of the various groups coming to the city.
For example, ultras will be a group of fans for whom identification with the club and the football festival atmosphere are the most important, while family supporters will prioritize providing attractions for children and ensuring a high level of safety in the city.

The demographic structure of each club is also different, adding another element that distinguishes clubs from each other. All differences between clubs are based on analyses of the behavior of fans of specific clubs, their preferences, and the priorities of different demographic groups. At Triple Espresso, we work with a scientist who holds a PhD in this field, specifically in the behavior of football fans 😊

Thanks to these aspects, choosing any club for a match will present a different organizational challenge, which is intended to make the gameplay unique in specific match-ups of particular clubs and cities.
Visual Component – A Sense of Completeness in Representing the Club in the Game
The visual representation of clubs in the game is a major challenge for us, so we approached it very thoroughly.
At Triple Espresso, in addition to our Art Director who ensures the visual consistency of the game, we also employ people who have worked on the visual representation of the biggest football club in Poland (from which country we originate). These individuals form a team that ensures all elements related to club branding and characteristic visual elements perfectly reflect the club and fan realities. We believe that club heraldry and symbols are among the most important values in the fan community—hence our very detailed approach to this topic.

Thank you for reading this text. We hope to see you in future articles where we will describe more elements of Copa City in detail. We warmly invite you to add the game to your wishlist!
