Dev Blog #2 - Gameplay

Happy New Year everyone!

It's time for another Dev Blog, and this one is a bit longer than usual.

We've shown you videos and screenshots of the Disasters in Project Planet, but we know you're curious about the gameplay. The team is hard at work creating an extensive gameplay trailer that should be ready later this quarter, but until then we wanted to give you a small sneak peek into the gameplay today!

Finding a group to play with

To start a game of Project Planet, gather some friends or if you’re still looking for those, find players on the #looking-for-group channel on our Discord. You can play with up to five other people, and any roles that are not filled will automatically be played by AI.

Project Planet is best enjoyed together on a couch, but if you can't all be in the same place, no problem - just stream the game to your friends using a video streaming service

Filling the lobby

Ready to play? Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Project Planet website on your phone, tablet, or other web-enabled device.
  2. Enter the Lobby Code and choose a username.
  3. Press "Join Game" and wait for everyone to select their preferred role.
  4. It's game time!

So what’s the gameplay?

Now that the game has started, it’s time to put your survival skills to the test. First, Planet Earth chooses a Disaster to challenge humanity. Earth can add insult to injury by piling on a wide range of Incidents and Crises, destroying the planet’s Ecosystems, increasing global Pollution, and rapidly reducing Humanity’s Population.

Meanwhile, the other five players need to guide their way through a series of impossible dilemmas. Each decision can affect everyone’s scores and determines the path humanity takes, leading to endless potential scenarios.

There can only be one winner

While Project Planet is a 1v5 multiplayer game, there is only one ultimate winner. If the Population is reduced to zero, Planet Earth wins. If humanity survives, the player with the highest score wins. This means you'll need to balance your decisions for the good of the Population with those that benefit your own score. While it may be tempting to prioritize your own score, remember that going down the selfish route can lead to conflict with other players and even Humanity's demise.

Dev Blog #1 - Happy Holidays

Hi everyone,

Welcome to our first Dev Blog!

From now on we will be posting bi-weekly updates, where we will go into detail on certain features, what we’re working on and other stuff that’s going on with Project Planet!

For this first blog, we have a short update on the first week since our Steam page went live, and of course some Happy Holiday wishes from the entire team!

Our first week

We would be lying if we said we weren’t a little nervous to reveal our game to the whole wide world, but this first week has been tremendously exciting! We received a ton of positive feedback and support, and want to thank everyone that shared our page with friends and family. We’re also seeing a good number of wishlists coming in, but of course we still have a very long way to go!

In the coming months, we will reveal the first gameplay footage and dive deeper into Project Planet’s features and Disasters.

Happy Holidays!

2023 is going to be an exciting year for Project Planet, but hopefully for all of you as well. We wish you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful 2023!

We will be back in two weeks, with our very first gameplay sneak peak. So be sure to keep an eye out for that, and follow us on our social channels for more content!

And if you can’t wait and want to get in touch before then, quickly head over to our Discord community!

Announcing Project Planet - Earth vs Humanity!

We are extremely proud to announce Fifth Harbour Studio’s very first game; Project Planet!

Multiplayer couch games and complex board games have been increasingly popular over the last decade, and if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s the importance of being able to have a good time with friends and family. Whether in person or online.

It has also renewed our awareness of the fragility and flaws of our exceptional civilization and the risks we face as a species. Project Planet perfectly captures these two developments in a unique blend of existing game genres and dramatic themes.

What is Project Planet?

Project Planet is a 1v5 serious party game where you can cooperate with and against your friends. Impossible dilemmas with strong real-life parallels, and branching narratives create countless ways to survive cataclysmic disasters like virus outbreaks, solar flares and asteroid impacts. Or you can take control of the disasters as Planet Earth, and destroy humanity altogether!

Will you save your fellow humans, or destroy them?

What roles can I play?

You can choose between Planet Earth and one of Humanity’s roles. As Earth, you will take on up to five of your friends. Your goal is to stop humanity from doing further harm, by wiping them off the planet.

Humanity is made up of five distinct roles – World Leaders, Industry, Scientists, Media, and the Public – each with its own gameplay style and the need to collaborate for survival. However, the goal is not just the survival of the human race, but also the pursuit of power and influence among players.

What is the gameplay like?

Project Planet challenges players with complex dilemmas that require careful consideration of not only the immediate effects of their decisions but also their potential future consequences. The game's narrative drives the need to negotiate, cooperate, and strategically utilize abilities to align with those acting in the best interest of humanity and oppose those who are not.

And here's the best part; your friends don't even need to own the game to play with you! Even if they can’t come over to your house, all you need to do is use a video conference tool to stream the game to them, have them visit www.projectplanet.tv on their phone or PC, and their browser will become their controller. It's that easy!

Your feedback during the first months of Early Access will be invaluable in refining game balance and addressing any issues you may encounter.

Whether you intend to save humanity or destroy it, we would love to get your input. Join our Discord to keep up to date on the development, and participate in our community to bring Project Planet to the next level!
