DevBlog #5 - Designing space maps

Hello everyone, let’s talk about SPACE! Well, kind of… I’m gonna talk a bit about how our space maps were designed.

One of our goals for this game was to make our players feel like they’re traveling through space, so we tried to give them freedom to explore and discover things on their own. To achieve this, we created maps where you can basically go anywhere you want.



All maps have a defined main objective, but the path towards it is totally up to the player.



Maps are composed of many nodes, which the player can navigate through, moving in any direction, as long as it is nearby.



Furthermore, we also wanted a world that feels alive, with its own inhabitants and places to visit. For that, we made many in-game events and spread them throughout the maps.



Each node represents a different location, and as the player reaches one of these, they encounter battles, minigames or interactions with NPCs.



The universe is huge and there are a lot of things to uncover, we can’t wait for you to embark on this crazy journey with us!

DevBlog #4 - The population mechanic

Hey! Did you know that in Zet Zillions you can throw your own people at your enemies?

By using certain cards, you can increase your opponents’ populations.



Each enemy has a limit to how many people can be thrown at them, and once that limit is reached, they become staggered for a moment, giving you time to build up your defenses, or hit them even harder!



But there’s more! Lots of cards can also affect and be affected by the enemies’ populations, allowing you to perform crazy combos!



[h2]What about planets?[/h2]

Planets are a special type of enemy, as they cannot become staggered. Instead, once you fill up their population gauge, you colonize them and win the battle.



Colonizing planets will grant you big rewards! But be aware, this is not an easy task, they will do all sorts of things to try and stop you.

DevBlog #3 - An intro to the fusion system

Hey! You know what's cool? FUSIONS! Let's talk about them.

Since the beginning of this project, we wanted to make a card game where you could combine stuff into something useful to shoot at your enemies, and that’s exactly what we did! In Zet Zillions, you make fusions of cards to create powerful, deadly and even dangerous new cards.

[h2]How it works[/h2]

In combat, you can combine cards on your hand by dragging one over the other and clicking on it. By doing this, you merge the two cards and get a new one, with its own effects and synergies.



Almost every card in the game can be combined with many others, resulting in lots of fusions.



There are also multiple ways to get the same fusion result, giving the player more freedom to choose the cards they want in their deck.



But that’s not all, some cards also have effects that are activated when they are fused.

So this was a glimpse at our fusion system. We had to go through A LOT of trial and error to make it work, but I can say we're pretty happy with how it turned out.

As a core feature of the game, we did our best to make it as intuitive and easy to understand as possible.

There are more than 100 combinations in our game. We encourage you to explore and try all you can find!

DevBlog #2 - The Art of Synergy

Hello, everybody and welcome to another ZET ZILLIONS post! This time we’ll be talking about what (for us) is the most important aspect of a card game: SYNERGY.

We’ve been working hard based on the feedback gathered from our demos to increase our number of fusions and effects and make it all work like a well-oiled machine!

Here, let me show an example:



Heavy Shuttle can be fused up to 3 times. For each fusion, it gains 8 damage. So when fusing it with Trash cards 3 times, it will end up dealing 24 Damage. And if you use a trash porter for the fusions, you will draw an additional card.

But things get way more interesting with our TRAIT system, TRAITS are passive skills that affect all your cards. So, imagine you have these 2 TRAITS in addition to the cards above:



Now, our previous combination of cards, will increase your damage for this turn (invigorate effect) by 3 per fusion! And also, when loading up the HEAVY SHUTTLER card, you’ll be able to draw 1 more card in addition to TRASH PORTER’s effect!

The end result is 33 DAMAGE and 2 cards drawn!

In our current demo it is a bit harder to get your hand on more than 2 or 3 TRAITS. In the final version you’ll be able to get up to 12 different TRAITS by completing missions, visiting event nodes and defeating bosses.

We worked very hard to improve our card effects, create interesting TRAITS and maximize SYNERGY to the brim!
