That Oblivion remaster is seemingly real, and Fallout 3 might be getting one too


It might be your time to rejoice, Oblivion and Fallout 3 fans, as a big Microsoft leak appears to have confirmed remasters for the pair of games are on the way.


Today is not Microsoft's day, as a whole bunch of confidential details have emerged from some documents as part of the FTC's case against the tech company. For one, it's been revealed that Dishonored 3 is in the works, and perhaps slightly surprisingly, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel too. But the thing that Bethesda fans will most likely be interested in is that remasters of both The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are in the works.


The leaked documents were shared on Resetera, showing a list of games and the years they were expected to release in. It's important to note that the Oblivion remaster was apparently planned to have been released in 2022, but obviously that year has come and gone, and we're almost finished with 2023 without any kind of official announcement about it. There was a rumour earlier this year about a potential Oblivion remake that Virtuos Games is apparently working on, but again, no confirmation on that just yet. Virtuos Games is a studio that predominantly co-develops games, and is currently assisting Konami on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake.

Everybody's favourite Oblivion voice actor is back in Starfield


One particular character in Starfield sees the return of a voice actor who's worked with Bethesda across its games for a long time.


You might not know his name, but if you're a fan of Bethesda, you almost certainly know his voice. I'm talking about Wes Johnson, of course, a voice actor who's offered his tones to Bethesda as far back as Morrowind. Though you'll probably most likely remember him for his work in Oblivion, in particular as all of the members of the Imperial Watch, noted for their classic "Stop! You violated the law," line, amongst others. If you do remember Johnson's work, you'll probably be happy to hear that he's back in Starfield, this time voicing a character called Ron Hope.


Ron, ironically enough, can be found in HopeTown, which is a settlement based on Polvo in the Valo system. He's also the CEO of HopeTech (sensing a running theme here), who you can take a mission from that involves finding a thief. Much like his Imperial Guard counterpart, he's also a bit of a stickler for holding criminals accountable, with the clip above showing how he wants the thief to be "prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

Starfield's "are planets planets" debate recalls the amazingly weird cosmology of Elder Scrolls


You may have noticed a mounting squabble between Starfield fans and detractors concerning the game's planetary maps, triggered by some leaks or fake leaks over the past week. Said skirmish has now escalated to "-gate" status, with "Tilegate" doing the rounds on forums and even creeping into search results, presumably much to the alarm of innocent, unaligned ceramics company Tilegate Trading Llc in Florida. The nub of the dispute seems to be thus: some people claim the procedurally generated tiles that comprise many Starfield environments actually glue together into complete globes, so that you can see and walk from one to the other and, indeed, all around the equator, while others claim they're discrete maps with invisible walls, similar to those of the astonishing "dreamable" space sim Noctis.



Who knows, we might have an under-embargo Starfield review in the works that will lay matters to rest. In the short term, the uncertainty about whether Starfield's planets are actually planets puts me in mind of comparable celestial angst in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games, where planets are more properly described as planes of existence, conjured by immortal beings, which sort of orbit the mortal world of Tamriel. I've been revisiting how Bethesda's mainstay fantasy games thought about outer space in the run-up to Starfield, and while I'm intrigued by the new game's portrayals of celestial mechanics (latest discovery: the Starfield starmap represents stellar and planetary gravity as dimples on a kind of galactic tarpaulin, as in old Stephen Hawking documentaries), I'll be very surprised if it offers anything quite as wonderfully bizarre.

If the rumours about an Oblivion remake are true, the wait for ES6 just got a lot easier

According to a now deleted Reddit post, a remake of the beloved Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is in the works over at Virtuous Games. The studio - itself at the centre of a previously leaked Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake which proved on the money - may very well be getting its hands on another fan favourite.

But first, the source. Earlier in the week Reddit User Suicidal_tendencie posted on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. This is a well-known hub for every leaky ship in the industry - both real and fictitious. The poster, claiming to be an ex-employee from Virtuous Games, revealed a range of projects including an Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake, although couldn't provide any screenshots as evidence.

"It is done currently using a pairing system, so it means that the remaster is running using both an Unreal Engine 5 project, and the Oblivion one. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the UE5 project, but most of the gameplay / physics /etc is still done in Oblivion. It should be released end of next year/ early [2025] depending m0stly if it's a remake or a remaster. It is mostly done in Paris, but Blackshamrock also helps the studio for the art."
