Monster Hunter Wilds News

Monster Hunter Wilds is finally getting a performance patch, and there's a perfectly-timed price cut too

It's a tale as old as time; a new triple-A game releases on PC, and for many players, it barely functions. Such a huge range of PC builds means that many playing Monster Hunter Wilds have had, well, problems getting the game to run smoothly. That doesn't negate the core experience, and it's still one of the best RPGs of last year, but the reality is that most people can't fully enjoy it. Fortunately, there's an upcoming patch that will optimize the game, and you can finally give it a try - especially as it's cheaper than ever before right now.

Further testing seems to confirm Monster Hunter Wilds DLC performance improvement theory, to an extent

I think we all want it to be true that the Monster Hunter Wilds’ infamously limp PC performance can be blamed upon, as was reported yesterday, an overzealous DLC checking process gumming up what might overwise be a perfectly fine-running beastfight game. Partly because it just sounds funny. Willing but frustrated graphics elves running about, harangued to distraction by a hairstyle add-on overseer nagging for licenses, like a Daily Telegraph reader demanding to know why you aren’t wearing a poppy on November 3rd.

The best part? All evidence suggests it genuinely is true – albeit only to varying degrees, and in the case of my own testing, nowhere near as drastically as in the originally discovered case.

Monster Hunter Wilds' PC performance might stand to be improved by limiting DLC checks, but that's not necessarily a silver bullet

Monster Hunter Wilds has famously endured struggles when it comes to running well on PC since release. Capcom have tried relentlessly to improve that situation, with varying results. Cue today, and a Reddit scientist coming to the conclusion that overtly aggressive DLC checks might be a key factor in the game's woes. Another modder has subsequently put out a work to combat the issue with the checks, but they reckon fixing this problem isn't necessarily a cure-all.

Monster Hunter Wilds sleuth has seemingly uncovered bizarre reason for performance drops: "I refused to believe what I was seeing"

Saturday January 17 - Added additional details thanks to testing from Digital Foundry.

Monster Hunter Wilds was one of last year's biggest releases, and still draws in huge crowds each day. Capcom's beast-slaying co-op game may be a hit, but even now as it approaches its first birthday in February, the game is still held back by performance issues - particularly on PC. Capcom has taken many swings at improving the experience, and it is notably better than at launch, but frame rate drops remain a mysterious thorn in Wilds' side that the developer has been unable to fully remove. However, one Monster Hunter Wilds player believes they've found an unusual reason why performance issues persist despite all of Capcom's efforts - it may be tied to how much DLC you own.
