Capcom, if you're listening: Monster Hunter Wilds needs its hitstop back




Nothing feels like Monster Hunter. You can fight giant lizards in any number of games, but Monster Hunter makes it look believable. When I take on a hunt to go toe-to-toe with a Deviljho, it doesn't just feel like I'm whittling away at an arbitrary number of health points. Instead, Capcom's combat, visual, and sound designers sell the fantasy of a hunter who's made a lifestyle of trading blows with tyrannosaurs. I'm not just dealing damage; when I find the right opening, I'm landing blows that look and feel like they hit hard enough for an elder dragon to feel it...

The PC beta for Monster Hunter Wilds has just wrapped up and, uh, it was something alright. Players felt the full wrath of the pretty beefy system requirements, with some rigs making Wilds look more like the original PS2 debut rather than a game that's supposed to be releasing in the year of our lord 2025...

Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) is the director and driving force behind Final Fantasy 14—and other projects at Square Enix besides, also directing the series' 16th entry. He's also in Monster Hunter Wilds, sort of. Presumably determined to see their favourite developer hit giant creatures with a giant instrument, fans recreated Yoshi-P in the game's character creator during the game's beta last week, as you can see below:..

Capcom assures that the Monster Hunter Wilds launch will improve on the beta

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta hasn't been going down well on PC. While it's attracted a colossal number of players, there are myriad reports of crashes, bugs, and graphical problems across the board. The full launch is still four months away, though, and Capcom is assuring us that we'll be playing a very different game come 2025. If you've been playing on PC, that might look like a pretty tall order. I wouldn't worry about your beta experience too much, though, because there are already a handful of fixes for all those PS1-looking faces.
