Euro Truck Simulator 2 and ATS are getting revamped force feedback

The 1.42 update for Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator is now in beta, and while the big feature of that patch is mod support for the multiplayer Convoy mode, the devs at SCS Software also briefly mentioned a force feedback update. That piqued the curiosity of players, so now the devs have provided a much bigger breakdown of what's changing.

In short, the force feedback system has been rebuilt from scratch. The old system made use of a "group of artificially set up effects" which deployed rumble as part of the main game logic. The new system runs on a separate loop at a 120Hz refresh rate, and it will make use of a combination of artificial effects and new, more realistic calculations for feedback.

The updated system features "new centering and tire friction force feedback, which is based on real calculations from forces on the first steering axle and simulates the behaviour of a hydraulic steering gear system used in most of today's trucks," as the devs explain in a blog post. You'll see more subtle changes in the feedback as you drive between bends and straight roads.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 goes to church

SCS Software's truck sims give us a lovely bit of digital tourism around the world, and since Euro Truck Simulator 2 is heading deeper into Russia for its next DLC, it's time to admire some religious architecture. The devs are pouring special attention into the churches of Russia, from the grandest cathedrals to the most humble of local chapels.

"The Russian church architecture is unlike any other and it is truly rare to find a style so aesthetically complex anywhere in the world," as the devs explain in the full blog post. "Most of the churches are distinguished by their verticality, bright colors and multiple domes." And, indeed, the devs have gone to great lengths to accurately recreate each house of worship in-game - it's easy to recognise each compared with its real-life counterpart.

The Heart of Russia DLC was announced earlier this year, before the launch of Iberia, and it still does not have a concrete release date. The free 1.42 update for both ETS2 and ATS is now in testing, bringing mod support for the Convoy multiplayer mode in both games.

A couple of perfect examples will be present in the city of Rybinsk, which is a home to not one, but two such beautiful structures - Ascension Church and Transfiguration Cathedral.

However, sometimes there’s more than the architecture itself, that makes these buildings stand out among their surroundings. The Transfiguration Cathedral in Ivanovo and Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God in Arzamas will both catch your eye due to their brightly colorful rooftops and patterns on the outside walls.

And for those who are fans of a more humble style, we promise you will not be disappointed when passing by the wooden chapels in local villages.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 and ATS are both getting multiplayer mod support

SCS Software's trucking simulators have had robust support from modders for ages, including a massively-multiplayer online mode with TruckersMP. Official multiplayer support came to American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 earlier this year, and while that implementation is quite different than the one modders built, it offers its own key advantages. Soon, those advantages will include support for even more mods.

Mod support for the Convoy multiplayer mode will go live in patch 1.42 for both ETS2 and ATS, and it's already available for testing in an open beta. As of this update, the server browser will now show you which - if any - mods are required for a given session. If they're available from the Steam Workshop, you'll be able to download them directly via an overlay without even needing to exit the game.

"We expect a majority of popular modifications to work from the get-go with this update, however, there may be some compatibility issues with others," the devs say in the announcement. There are some minor caveats, too - many sound mods will only play for local users, for example, so you won't be able to impress your friends with your custom truck horns.
