What's Next? Post-Release Plans Revealed

Hi War Mages!

We’ve finally arrived at release day for Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap, but the work doesn’t stop here! We have lots of plans for future updates including more War Mages, additional maps, new features, fresh modes, etc. We’ll keep you posted as these details emerge. For now, we’d like to share some of the current thinking.

In the Works and Coming “Soon”

Our immediate plans include a bevy of content that we will release as soon as possible. The below list will be free content to all players.
New War Mage: Master Gabriella
Series staple and now Master of the Order Gabriella will be a playable War Mage. She’s in development with an exciting kit of tricks including the reintroduction of Arcane magic.
New Map: Resort Canal
Resort Canal is set in the game’s Coastal Biome and will feature two rifts you'll need to defend at the same time. Despite the relaxing setting, pulling this off is no vacation.
Unstable Orc
A victim of Rift magic experimentation, the Unstable Orc is a large, grotesque and distorted orc. He's slow moving and absorbs a lot of damage. This beast explodes on death dealing damage to both War Mages and disables traps in a large area.
The Alchemist
An Alchemy Lab will be introduced to the Order Fortress offering you buffs for mission runs. See what the Alchemist has cooked up and spend your precious skulls. Also, what happened to this guy? Oof, creepy.
New Sentinel: Gnome Balloonist
A newly designed Sentinel created to add more ceiling space for traps. This Order Gnome can randomly spawn in predetermined spots on every map and provide a 2x4 trap space floating two trap spaces high. Swinging Mace redeemed.

The Road Ahead

Longer term, we plan to continue supporting the game for as long as possible. We have ideas for a wide variety of content and features. Plus, we’ll be watching and listening to the community closely to learn how you all would like to see the game grow and improve. If you haven’t already, please join us on Discord!

Future updates include new maps (some in new Biomes), additional War Mages, more deadly TRAPS, new devious enemies, game modes, and plenty of additions to Distortions, Threads, and Blessings.

Thanks for your support! We’ll be listening closely after release.

Orcs Must Die: Deathtrap review

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That mantra could apply to horde shooters in general—demonstrating through games like Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic that mowing down thousands of something will always be cool—as easily as it could apply to Orcs Must Die, a series which spent the last decade content to reprise its novel blend of tower defense and third person shooting with steely consistency. Trends come and go, industries shift and change, but orcs? Orcs must die, and that’s just not the sort of thing you mess with...

Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap (PC) Review

I will be honest—before I received the review opportunity for Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap, I had no idea the series was still alive and kicking. I remember seeing it back in the good old days of Xbox Live Arcade, and I had assumed, like so many great indies on that platform, it was a one-and-done experience. But little did I know it had been going strong until as recently as 2020.

It makes sense that Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap—or, for that matter, the entire series—would not have been on my radar, as I have never been the biggest fan of tower defence games. The last one I played in earnest was Fortified back in 2016, and I have genuinely never been a fan of that style of gameplay, often seeing its inclusion as the point where a game has run out of ideas.

However, Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap genuinely hooked me thanks to the series’ central mechanic of directly involving the player in a much more interesting and action-packed way. And while I still cannot say I love the genre, I... Read more

Developer Streams - Solo and Co-Op Gameplay Showcase

Recently, our Game Director, Kyle, hosted two developer live streams. Check out the videos below!

Solo Play

Thrilling yet manageable solo play is essential to the Orcs Must Die! experience. Here, Kyle shows you how the game’s difficulty scales, and how the single player can control the larger maps of Deathtrap. You’ll also see how powerful traps are, which has been a big question from the community.

Co-Op Play

Kyle and three OMD! game designers dive into four player co-op (2-player and 3-player games are also great). Check out how the different War Mages interact and use their unique abilities and traps to power through deep runs.

We had a great time doing these and hope to do more post launch.
Thank you all of our fans who tuned in, see you in game on the 28th!
