WEEKLY UPDATE!! 3/26/23

This week I played through the current build of the vampire route for the first time in what feels like forever. I fixed some small things that should have been addressed earlier. Previously, whenever you were in the overworld, or even after certain battles, the screen tint would change to a normal, daytime color. I've made it so that the "nighttime" filter is on whenever you are outside. On the backend, I also made the leveling process a parallel common event (something I should have done in the first place). This isn't a change players will really notice, but is more of a quality of life change for me moving forward. One change players will notice is that when you are caught by one of the hunters in town, you'll now be able to push them away, similar to the enemies in chapter 4 of the main story. You still have to worry about being dog-piled, but you at least have a better chance to escape!

I am also done doing all of the sprite work and character art as of this week. I had been postponing the sprite art because I was unsure how to go about making a mermaid character sprite. below is the result of a bit of digging through some references. I think Maryn's sprite came out decently. Here she is fawning over Captain Gloria:

I've also completed another map, the pirate's base of operations, Devil's Cay:

This offshore pocket of land houses some pirate booty and a few fights. If you're familiar with the contest entry's story, you'll know what goes on here...

I am also working on a gameplay hook that will be exclusive to the vampire route. I'm still getting everything in place, but I think that players will be pleased with it's implementation. I'll have more to share with you next week!

That's all I have to share with you this week. Until next time, everyone!

WEEKLY UPDATE!! 3/19/23

A few bugs from the most recent version had been nagging at me, so this week I attempted to address them. The first, was Aeriseth's boss fight in the casino not working as intended. This error came about from me thinking I had a redundant common event in the data base and overwriting it with the new Blackjack NPC within the casino. This is why you don't mess with code you haven't touched in years, folks. Thankfully, I had a back up of the original event on my old laptop and I'm happy to say the event has been restored to normal. I even spent a good amount of time getting my ass kicked in Blackjack to ensure the scene played out properly, as well as the other encounters with her afterward.

The second bug has been a bit trickier to find a solution to. Some have reported the game's graphics freezing while the game seemingly continues to run in the background. There's no concrete trigger for it and it can cause a player to lose progress, so it's quite frustrating. I've read a few RPG Maker devs run into this issue and I've run into it myself on occasion. I've seen answers range from it being a driver issue, to vsync issue, but nothing so far seems conclusive. This is a bug I have a pin on and if any of you know of a solution or where to point me towards, I'd love to hear it. Until then, I'll keep on digging.
Onto one of the smaller tasks done this week, some updated graphics for enemy types.

Human Maids can be encountered and corrupted into vampires and ghouls. The same goes for the armored soldier enemies, which will appear during the "Countess in Crimson" side quest. The maid's sprite graphics have been updated to show her bright new emerald colored eyes. The maids won't put up much of a fight, but the soldiers will be a challenge to defeat!
And lastly I was doing some supplemental writing to flesh out some character backstories. I'm tracking it all in a notebook so I don't miss anything. Some of these details I'm writing now may not be shown for a while, but one of the characters you will be able to interact and learn about is Vicilla. She will added as a new Pet in the latest update and you'll be able to view a new illustration of her once you build up bond with Mila. Here's a quick teaser:

All my Tier 2 and up Patrons can view the full image now if they like.

That's all I have to share with you this week. Until next time, everyone!

WEEKLY UPDATE!! 3/12/23

It's been a hectic week for me. I don't about all of you, but I'm looking forward to the upcoming Spring Recess for some extra free time!

This week, I got down to drafting the scenario for the "Countess in Crimson" quest. I've sketched out a map of the layout while adding in notes of aspects I want to add to this short dungeon. I also finished making some of the new sprites for the characters in this quest and importing all of their character portraits into the game. With that step out of the way, I can begin map building and event scripting!

The loyal maid, Lauren Lindholm's character portrait and expressions are all done. I also finished the colors and shading for another character, Captain "Redbeard" Gloria:

I haven't finalized all her expressions yet, as I'm waiting until I'm done writing the script for her scenes, but I cleaned up her look a lot from the initial sketch and I'm quite satisfied with how she turned out.
I want to use the some of the time I have working on this update to clean up some other things in the vampire route. Stuff like adding in additional character portraits and adjusting some maps come to mind. Are there any small aspects of the vampire route that are nagging you? Let me know and maybe I can address them in time for this update.

That's all I have for you this week. Until next time, everyone!

WEEKLY UPDATE!! 3/5/23

Happy Sunday everyone. This week’s post is the first to simultaneously release on Steam. I hope those of you who are new to the game will catch up with the game’s news regularly to see what’s next in the pipeline! Let’s get into it.

This week was spent sprucing up the newest area, the pirate ship known as the “Ruddy Raider”. The boat pieces and flags were confusing me while I was assembling the map, so I had to look up a few references while making it. All the rooms are connected to one another, though not all of the rooms are fully furnished.

You will be able to access the ship once you have accepted the questline in Humilem Village by visiting the new Port of Mor, which has been moved to the eastern side of the map.

I’ve also finished coloring a new character for the second quest of this update. This is Alvin Rosenblad.

Much like his sister, Alvin is haughty and arrogant. When I put the two siblings side by side, you can really see the resemblance.

Anyway, that’s all the news I have to share with you today. Until next time!
